So I'm going to take this time to think about the 2012 transfer window. Clearly, winter doesn't promise any players coming in as the team looks set with depth.
First thing is that we generally only spend big money every other year. 2009 it was Robben and Gomez. 2011 it was Neuer, Boateng, and Gustavo in the winter.
Tymoschuk's contract is winding down, as is van Buyten's. Their age means that the club has to consider letting them walk. However, I actually think both will be given one year extensions. van Buyten would probably have left if Breno developed this year, but instead he's in a jail cell plotting his suicide. Tymoschuk is the ultimate team player, and still looks to be in good physical condition not withstanding his age.
So with that said, I think the only obvious hole is a replacement for Breno. In my opinion the obvious choice is Dante at Gladbach. He was in a few Team of the Seasons for the Bundesliga last year, and is a big part of Gladbach's phenomenal defensive record so far this season too. He also seems like the kind of player who would accept a backup role, which is important since Badstuber and Boateng is clearly intended to be the partnership of the future. He also speaks German and would be relatively cheap.
We could also make a play for Marco Reus, who is becoming a star at Gladbach of all places and pushing for inclusion in the German National Team; I know I prefer him over Marin and Trachowski already. The only problem there is that he will be a rotation player here; now with Robben in the squad you can maybe count on injuries, so he'd play more than normal, but he would still be essentially the 5th player for the 3 attacking midfield spots. A lot of players have failed to handle this backup role at Bayern, particularly young German players.
I personally would like to see Sven Bender or Yann M'Vila. Luis Gustavo is one of my favorite players and Tymo is a strong backup, but he's still old. However, I think this is something that can get pushed back to what will probably be a big spending year in 2013.
The long term transfer outlook: actually not all that different. I think in 2013 with Ribery and Robben nearing (or maybe at) 30 we'll have to grab a world class attacking midfielder or winger. Marco Reus again is an option here, as would be a plethora of great German players such as Holtby and Schurrle, and of course the crown jewel Gotze. Then I'd say we need a central defender to replace Badstuber (I just don't think he's good enough), and a DM. For central defense, it really just remains to be seen who emerges, although I'd most prefer Mats Hummels (in 2012 as well... ASAP!). For DM, as I've said earlier, I want Yann M'Vila or Sven Bender.
I also think it should be said that at least in my opinion, the long term replacement for Schweinsteiger as the more attacking minded CM is Toni Kroos, and he played in that role next to the more defensive oriented Rolfes for Germany against Poland. Obviously Schweinsteiger has a lot of years in front of him, but it's something that needs to be said. It also opens up a spot for another AM player to fit with essentially Muller, Reus/Gotze/Schurrle/Holtby, and whoever is healthy between Robben and Ribery.
