So anyway, I was happy about the Sammer hiring, but also initially thought "that was harsh on Nerlinger".
And then I thought about what he's done in the last two years...
Reus
Vidal
Coentrao
We need a ******* closer because just imagine our team with those three guys next year. Those are the missing pieces. Then you look at the signings he did make
Alexander Baumjohann (flop)
Ivica Olic (good)
Danijel Pranjic (flop)
Mario Gomez (can't say this is bad, but I can at least complain about the transfer fee)
Arjen Robben (good, but this was probably Hoeness)
Edson Braafheid (flop)
Anatoliy Tymoschuk (huge price tag)
Luiz Gustavo (huge price tag)
David Alaba (gem)
Rafinha (flop)
Nils Petersen (flop)
Manuel Neuer (good, but Uli again)
Jerome Boateng (don't get me ******* started)
Xherdan Shaqiri (probably great, but who knows)
That's not a great success ratio, especially given the prices he's paid for some of these guys. He also sold Mats Hummels. For comparison's sake, in Uli's last 3 years, here were his signings.
Hamit Altintop (okay, but free)
Jose Sosa (flop)
Franck Ribery (superstar)
Miroslav Klose (star)
Marcell Jansen (flop)
Breno (incarcerated)
Luca Toni (superstar)
Jan Schlaudraff (flop)
Daniel van Buyten (starter for like 5 years)
Mark van Bommel (captain)
Lukas Podolski (flop)
Ali Karimi (haha)
Valerien Ismael (flop)
I didn't count the summer of 2008 because I wasn't sure who made the signings, and there weren't many anyway. But the point being, to me there's just no comparison, Nerlinger was a big step down from Uli and we need someone who can do this job as well as everyone else at the club does their job. Our stature was much less when Uli was making the signings, but he made bigger and better ones than Nerlinger has. That's pathetic. Right now we should realistically be competing with the top EPL clubs for players. We can compete in terms of salary, endorsements (oh trust me, Bayern has this **** DOWN), trophies, and even exposure. Bayern is one of the 5 best clubs in the world right now without question (Barca, Madrid, United, Chelsea), and we're picking through scraps. Bye, Nerlinger, hope you enjoy Wolfsburg.
