i agree with Virgo on that :p

if the brazilians has quality why not? Porto can buy this players, luck you

Paulo Da Silva

Starting XI
we may have a team full of brazilians, but they are brazilians with talent, unlike the team that had clyaton, Rubens Juniour, Pena, Allesandro, etc....

we can not deny the quality of players like Pepe, Alberto, Fabiano, Derlei, and Diego.

well there is one exception.....MACIEL, but sometimes even he looks like a world beater.

plus to tell you the truth, there isn't much portuguese talent out there that can play for the main squad at a high level, all those players with quality are either too young(vierinha, gama, Barbosa, etc) or belong to other clubs that won't sell to rivals(Fernades, Custodio, Paim, etc....)

Porto are a big club now, I think they can afford to keep McCarthy since they will need as many strikers as possible to fight the Portuguese league and the Champions League. Besides, its too late for McCarthy to go to the EPL since their transfer period has ended. I'm sure they will work something out for now until the transfer season starts again in the winter. But then, IMO, it will be too late because McCarthy will have proven his ability as a bench striker "a la" Solksjaer.

It seems McCarthy wanted to go to the EPL cause now that we have Fabiano he will be benched much more times... still i think we need him cause the season is long and we'll play in many competitions and 4 forwards in one team is not that much, just imagine if someone gets a punishment or get injured...

UEFA has buried a capsule holding several items at its headquarters in Nyon. among those items are a pair of gloves from Vitor Baía, a ball with the autographs (sp?) of Porto players that won the CL, some Euro 2004 tickets, a cd of the official Euro2004 sound track and many oher goodies.

this capsule is supposed to be unburied 50 years from now

I saw that too, it's an incredible honour to our club the fact that capsule have a ball with the autographs of Porto players and the gloves of the best European keeper nowadays, Vítor Baía. ;) (H)

I see Mario Silva is settling in well after a failed experience abroad in Nantes. What are Huelva´s aspirations this year? Promotion?
Gl for Huelva on their objective.

the bests aspirations of Huelva in this year are promotig, naturally, the team have the best defense of the league, and one of the best attacks with Ikechuwku Uche, the best player of the team

a pic of Mario Silva in the first match in the Recreativo´s Stadium

Thanks for the pic, albertocp. :)

Hey, the colour scheme isn't much differen't from Porto's, so Mário should feel at home. ;)

He's a decent player, you know, but probably the most injury-prone athlete we've ever had. Every time he played he got injured, and that sucks. Hope he is more lucky at Recreativo!

Doesnt Huelva have another portuguese player? Alex something, cant remember his last name. I think he was a Center back. He was portuguese but born in Venezuela if i recall it.

Speaking about injuries, Pepe will be available for the match in Braga while Fabiano, Diego, Derlei and Nuno Valente will probably not be able to play this match... let's see if we have at least Diego and Derlei(that's what the press says) for the game against CSKA, that would be good. (H)

We all know what happened yesterday.

I had to clear my head and wrote this in the Porto forum. I'll put it here too, maybe it can explain a few things about the game:

My views...
No dots...
As this'll be a long piece...:

First off I need to say that, though I expected a goalfesta, I knew it could turn out the wrong way. And dammit, it did...

The game: I started to watch the game right after the 0-1 and was unpleasantly surprised by that score. The first in-game action didn't convince me at all. Everything went wrong: combination, technique, organization... Estoril dominated us and we fell apart. What seemed to be the biggest prob was the team not being a team. Look, at high school we had something like "friendship day" were we went on a trip with our class, played games, learned to know eachother etc. Maybe this team can do the same: isolate from the press for a day or 3, enjoy a holiday, light training, but most importantly: learn to know eachother. Might be a big help.
Our defence looked good (except for the Pepe/Emanuel combo which didn't work out). Seitaridis was impregnatable (some blame him for the first goal, I blame Pepe) and Areias worked his ass of (I stand with my opinion about him: he's gonna shine this season). Fabiano had a great start and adapted well, Postiga is on a "losing streak". Pity...
Our main prob is the midfield: Maniche has lost direction (I think the Arsenal transfer saga is behind this), Alberto completely lost his head since the CL final, Quaresma/Diego/Leal are new to this system and need time to adapt.

Second half blew me away: no ground breaking football, but like a lot better than the first 45 mins, something that really surprised me (a 15-min-long friendship day) and gives me hope for the future. We totaly dominated and one thing attracted my attention: during pre-season I complained about the lack of defence/attack build up, something that improved a lot which was clearly visible during the second half. Especialy the teamplay (cominations, teamwork...) were from a decent level. All played above average and we deserved more than one goal.

About Estoril: they are weak, don't be fooled by this result: I didn't see a spark of brilliance in that team and I believe they are ready to go down. Though a class goal by Pinheiro...
What is it with small team gk's who play the game of their life vs us? Roma last season, Jorge Baptista now. Can't stand the guys face and during the game I wished I was at the Dragão with a sniper rifle in my hands.

Someone mentioned ppl still having hope are in La La Land. Well, I'm in La La Land and it's a pity so many Portistas aren't. From the Benfica game untill now I see a growing potential, game by game we're getting better. A win vs Leiria can change it all.

Now let's all go to La La Land, keep hope alive, support the team and you'll see: things will work out...

I wrote ana analysis of the game in the SuperLiga thread, yesterday night (i went to see the game live), and I realised that I should have written it here instead (after all, this is "our club's thread" ;).

I'll repost it here, just in case someone missed it:

Well, I just got home after going to the match and having dinner with some friends discussing the team's performance. There's nothing like watching the guys live to see how the team works. So first, I'll do a simple "one by one" analysis to the players, and then to the team overall:

Baía: Could do nothing at all in the goals.
Seitaridis: Man of the Match IMHO. He's simply amazing with his runs. Has an incredible positioning skill. Tackles well too. He supported the attack all the way to the crossing zones. In the first half he did the right flank all by himself (Hugo Leal was supposed to be there too ), untill Fernandez told Maniche to run that midfield zone. (I can't believe that some people already told me that the TV commentators said he was not good... man, those guys don't know how to watch a game in the stadium. One thing is loking on the tv and other is to be there and pay attention to what a player does. And Giourkas can do a lot!!)
Areias: We all know he isn't much skilled.. Like I use to say to my friends: He has two bricks in his feet... but he works hard, gives all he's got and today made some good attacking moves. Can't blame him at all for the teams poor performance!
Pedro Emanuel: I always liked this guy. He's the teams boss back there. IMO he has to be in the starting eleven with Jorge Costa, although they are similar defenders (not the classical "one guy for hard jobs, the other for the running"). But he seemed nervous today. No blame at all in the goals but he was never able to start the offensive game from his zone.
Pepe: Overhyped kid. All his fault in the first goal, and a stupid positioning that made him do the foul to the second Estoril goal. I don't like him and I think he would work much better as a DM. He had some incredibly stupid positioning moves in the second half, and off the ball he does absolutely nothing.
Costinha: I have a lot of respect for him. He worked hard, got a lot of loose balls, runned like a madman in the field. Didn't desearve the draw.
Maniche: He's the best Porto player by far. Runs the 90 minutes, doesn't make a bad pass, opens space for the guys in front, helps Costinha whenever he can. 2nd best man on field tonight.
Hugo Leal: He played???? I won't even commentate his 45 minutes on field...
Carlos Alberto: Sometime ago, I criticised Cristiano Ronaldo (and still do) about his selfishness. Then someone in this forum accused me that I wouldn't say that if it was a Porto player. I said I would, and here's the proof (and wait until I get to Quaresma....). Alberto doesn't know what team game is. He can't receive a proper pass (that's bad form... last year he was great with his backs to the box), and never looks before making a pass. He lost some very stupid balls that gave Estoril the chance make some dangerous attacks. He also isn't a Nº10. He needs to play behind a lonely striker, acting as a fake 2nd striker, creating runs and space for the striker. He has no space in this team, and needs to sit in the bench of the B team for a while, watching the kids play like a team.
Postiga: He tried. Really, he doesn't desearve to hear the crown boohing at him. He tries hard, but he simply isn't in shape now. He'll be great during the season... i bet.
Fabiano: What a good surprise He's working with the team for a few weeks and already can make team play. He has great positioning, antecipation skills, heading and instinct. There were always 2 guys marking him and he felt the need to go back, take the game from behind and use te lines. He's really going to be "Fabuloso" One of the best tonight!!
Quaresma: here it goes: LEARN TO PLAY FOOTBALL YOU FRICKING KID! Run when the team doesn't have the ball for ******* sake!! He simply sits in the line waiting for a pass, then he sticks his ******* head in the ground and throws the ball randomly into the box. He's pathetic! I really hope Fernandez can teach him. He has raw talent there... but he simply doesn't know how to use it!
Derlei: Not his night. Run, fighted a lot like usual, gained several 2nd balls, used the line very well, worked as an AMC several times! But tonight was not his night. He's lacking confidence but I'm sure he'll get it soon.
Benni: In his few minutes he worked well within the defenders, and had a deflected header by Derlei that seemed to be directed to the net (I was with SuperDragões in the stands... behind the net.)

Now the team:
It's concerning really. One simple example of how the team lost confidence on itself is the fact that last year (and two years ago) I loved to see the throw in's. We never, NEVER lost a ball in those situations. There was always a studied move. Now there's nothing... The team doesn't know how to use the lines, the midfield is overcrowded and the players lack confidence. The defense looks nervous (I would too if Pepe was in my team...), and the space between the CD and the right/left backs is not well occupied. The players don't know who should get to the ball...
In the midfield, Carlos Alberto and Hugo Leal are two players that don't work. They can't be starters anymore, period. And the front guys spent 90% of the game without receiving a propper pass from the midfield. This way is not easy to score... There are severe positioning problems in the attacking moves: there is nobody able to make surprise "desmarcações" (can't remember the damn word ). The free kicks are ridiculous (they spent the week training them said the papers... now that's a surprise to me....).

There, I'm tired, in need to sleep, so excuse me the spellings and the grammar :P
Boy, do I feel relieved after a post like this

BTW, Estoril is a really weeeeak team...

As you can see Tajike, we have quite similar views of yesterday night's game...

i agree with all of your views.

it pissed off with the latest results, but we have to understand that since Fernandez started to coach the team he didn't had all the players in practice, some were injured, some were called to their NTs, etc etc...also, yesterday, in the starting eleven there were 7 (!!!!) new players, players that arrived in the last months, and that had never played together. for example our defensive line had 3 of those! Areias, Seitaridis and Pepe. of course problems will arise, since these players are still knowing each other...our midfield is also new and young, apart from Maniche and Costinha (o Ministro), we have Diego (19), Quaresma (20?), C.Alberto (19), Hugo Leal (21/22?). these are unexperienced young players, that had never played in the same team! with all this newcomers it is hard to have a solid team spirit, that takes to much time to build up...but time is something that FC Porto doesn't have now...more than ever players like Baía, Jorge Costa, Maniche and Costinha will have to carry the team on their backs, and be the youngster's parents. remember Costinha's words in the end of Braga-Porto, that's what i'm talking about.
it's a thougth moment our club is going through but i believe we will see better days, i just don't expect to go far in CL...
