FIFA U-20 World Cup Canada 2007 Update!

South American U-20 Championship

(FIFA.com) 03 Jan 2007

Following the heartbreak of semi-final elimination at the hands of Argentina two years ago, Brazil are out to restore pride and recover the FIFA U-20 World Cup title from their great rivals at Canada 2007, which begins on 30 June. First, though, Nelson Rodrigues must successfully guide his charges through this month's South American U-20 Championship, which serves as a qualifier to the global showpiece, and a star-studded squad suggests that the coach is leaving nothing to chance as he looks to secure Brazil a 14th consecutive appearance at the FIFA U-20 World Cup.

The draw for Paraguay-hosted event certainly smiled on the Seleção, who avoided holders Colombia as well as fellow contenders Uruguay and Argentina. Instead, the Auriverde face a curtain-raiser against Chile on 7 January, before matches against Peru, Bolivia and then the hosts in their concluding Group A match. The top three from pools A and B will progress to the final phase.

Having claimed the silver medal at the last two editions of the South American Youth Championship, the Brazilian camp, aching to stand highest on the end-of-tournament podium, assembled on 11 December, well in advance of their trip across the Paraguayan border. Thereafter, Nelson Rodrigues' side competed in a series of warm-up matches, improving with each performance and capping off their preparations with an impressive 10-0 win over a Camapua XI.

Glittering cast, although a youth competition, Nelson Rodrigues' stunning group includes two players who have recently featured in senior Brazil squads. Santos wingback Carlinhos, exalted for his speed and trickery, was summoned for international duty ahead of the Seleção's latest outing against Switzerland, while versatile midfielder Lucas teamed-up with the likes of Kaka, Ronaldinho and Robinho for the friendly against Ecuador in October. To followers of domestic football in Brazil, his inclusion had come as no surprise. The nephew of the legendary Leivinha, who represented his country at the 1974 FIFA World Cup™, the Gremio jewel experienced a spectacular ascent in 2006, which culminated in him pocketing Placar magazine's prestigious Golden Ball, awarded to the Brazilian Championship's best performer.

However, the name that has created the most excitement is that of newly-crowned FIFA Club World Cup champion, Alexandre Pato. In spite of his lack of experience - he helped Internacional win Japan 2006 on only his third professional outing - the 17-year-old is regarded as one of the hottest prospects on the planet, and while neutrals will be looking forward to witnessing his rich arsenal of skills, the rest of South America will be agonizing over how to negate his indubitable threat.

When you add to the Brazilian pack the likes of Flamengo marksman Fabiano Oliveira, Leandro Lima of Sao Caetano and Alexandre Pato's club-mate, Luiz Adriano, whose semi-final strike earned Internacional the right to face Barcelona in Yokohama, it becomes apparent why they are heavily fancied to end this month as continental kings at U-20 level.

But history has emitted its warning signals. The Seleção were strongly tipped to triumph at both the 2003 and 2005 South American Youth Championships before slipping up, and in 1999, as the overwhelming favourites, they finished third behind Argentina. Later that year, future FIFA World Cup competitors Julio Cesar, Juan and Ronaldinho returned home disappointed from the FIFA World U-20 event in Nigeria. Nelson Rodrigues must ensure that the class of 2007, one that possesses quality in equal measure, does not crash and burn in similar fashion.

Victory against Chile on Sunday would certainly represent a positive first step towards success.

I'm guessing Argentina could struggle once again to get through like last time, because clubs are being dip****s not letting valuable players go for the U20 national team(and it gets worse everytime). Also a bit off-topic but this tournament will also decide what 2 teams will take part in the Olympic football in Beijing 2008.

Edgar: The experienced youngster

Edgar, just 19, is mobbed by Newcastle team-mates after scoring a late equaliser against Manchester United on 2 January 2007.

(FIFA.com) 08 Jan 2007

A veteran of two FIFA U-20 World Cups, full-back David Edgar will be a key component in Canada's bid for glory on home soil this summer. As he gets set to line up at yet another global youth showpiece, the towering 19-year-old defender took time out for an exclusive chat with FIFA.com about the future of Canuck football and his recent surge into the first team with his beloved Newcastle United.
Edgar, a native of Kitchener Ontario, but with generations of Geordie blood in his veins, admitted to nerves when he lined up for his first run-out in the Newcastle first team in the 26 December loss away to Bolton. "Yeah, I was a bit nervy because I had a whole day before to think about it and that can sometimes get to your head."

However, the speedy 6ft 4ins full-back quickly set his trepidation aside in his next start on 1 January, in front of just over 52,000 screaming fans at the cauldron of St James's Park. League leaders and local rivals Manchester United were in town, and to cap off a wonderful performance on his home debut, it was the unlikely young Canuck who popped up in the 74th minute to hammer home a long-range equaliser in a 2-2 draw.

"There is no way to accurately describe how it felt to score that goal, it was just unbelievable," the likeable Canadian - who also figures for the senior national side - told FIFA.com. "As soon as it left my foot I knew it was going in and I just went mad. It was the greatest feeling in the world. I couldn't stop smiling and the boss and the players had to calm me down because there were still 15 minutes to go. I can tell you, though, I was smiling for a few days after the game too!"

David's father - Eddie Edgar - was a goalkeeper for the Magpies in the 1970s, and with the family's roots planted squarely in the muddy ground of north-eastern England, playing for the club is point of significant pride for the youngster.

"I've supported Newcastle ever since I was a little kid in Ontario," he explained. "My family are all Geordies… so when I got a chance to get into the academy when I was 13, I was just thrilled. It's more than just a sport up there - the club is woven into the fabric of everyone in the city."

In addition to his time at Newcastle, Eddie Edgar also had the distinction of playing with 'O Rei' himself, Pele, during a stint with the New York Cosmos of the North American Soccer League in the late 1970s. As a boy, David recalls being regaled with stories of the Brazilian's unparalleled artistry. "He (Eddie) used to tell me about the magical things he (Pele) would do with the ball and he described him as the best player he'd ever seen in his life. Pele even gave my dad one of his jerseys and I have that with me at my house."

With Newcastle currently struggling in 14th place in the Premiership, but still alive in the UEFA and FA Cups, Edgar sees possibilities for silverware in 2007. "Our form in the league has not been great, but we've been putting in some good performances in the FA Cup and we won our group in the UEFA Cup," said the teenager. "We will really be pushing hard to try to achieve something in these competitions. The FA Cup means a lot to the fans here in Newcastle. We should have won on Saturday (a 2-2 draw with Birmingham City), but we're still in there with a replay."

Another magic moment for the youngster as he celebrates scoring the winner for Canada’s U-20s in a recent friendly with mighty Brazil.

Canada expect
When July rolls around, Edgar will need to swap his role as young Newcastle prodigy for that of a Canada U-20 veteran. A member of the squad that came within minutes of reaching the semi-finals at UAE 2003, he also lined up two years later in the Netherlands for a Canadian side that dropped out in the first round with just one point, and that from a draw with Syria.
Edgar is sure that this summer's FIFA U-20 showpiece will see a Canada more like the one that showed so much in the middle-east four years ago.

"This group of players is really good and recent results against Brazil and the Czech Republic prove that," he said. "Everyone in the team is really excited to play. It's getting huge and I hear that a lot of the tickets are already sold in Canada. We need all of the fans to get behind us and I am sure they will be. Normally Canadian teams are not used to having lots of fans behind them, as we play a lot of our games away from home. But this time, with the fans behind us, we are ready to go and hopefully we can show our stuff."

Unlike the rest of the 24-team field that will line up in the Great White North, the Canucks will not be required to go through a qualifying process. Edgar, who will most likely captain Dale Mitchell's side, does not, though, see this as a handicap.

"I don't think that we'll miss much by not having to qualify," he said, "because we have a lot of tough games scheduled for the build-up to the tournament. We have trips to Scotland and Florida and a whole lot of games all over Canada."

As for stepping into the role of team leader after a season of playing the 'baby boy' with Newcastle, Edgar - who scored in a recent shock win over Brazil's U-20s - has no worries. "Yeah, I love to play the role of leader. The younger guys will look up to me and I'll try to help them out all the time."

With bags of experience to pass on to his younger mates, the sky may just prove to be the limit for Edgar and Canada as they eye their first-ever world crown.

Fearless Cuthbert's Canadian quest

Scott Cuthbert, pictured here leading by example in the Scots U-20s' win over Turkey at the UEFA European U-19 Championship, told FIFA.com that he wasn't surprised by the team's run to the final. Image courtesy of uefa.com.

(FIFA.com) 11 Jan 2007

A country of little over five million people, Scotland has often stood accused of being obsessed with its 'small nation' status. Nowhere, it is argued, does this obsession manifest itself more clearly than in football, where the country's fans have become considerably more adept at winning friends than its national team at progressing in international competitions. If, however, U-20 captain Scott Cuthbert is typical of the new generation of Scottish footballers, the jovial, self-effacing acceptance of failure that has characterised the nation over recent years may be about to be replaced by a new expectant, demanding streak. Some may recall that the 19-year-old Celtic centre-half was an inspirational figure in the side that marched all the way to the final of the UEFA European U-19 Championship in Poland last summer, a remarkable feat achieved against all expectations - all, that is, save for those of Cuthbert and his colleagues.

It is clear, certainly, that when he reflects on that memorable campaign, Cuthbert does not consider that Scotland 'punched above their weight' in delivering knockout blows to the likes of France, Portugal and the Czech Republic, but merely that they began to fulfil the kind of potential which could, he believes, see them emerge as a similar surprise package at this summer's FIFA U-20 World Cup.

Captain Adu to lead US charge

It’s all smiles for young US captain Adu as he gets set to lead the side in Panama.

(FIFA.com) 11 Jan 2007

As the United States, led by well-travelled Dutch-born boss Thomas Rongen, prepare to head to Panama for FIFA U-20 World Cup qualifying, all eyes are on Freddy Adu. Although the current American squad has more professional players than at any time in the past, Adu still remains the highest-profile name on the team sheet.
Even after a failed recent trial at Manchester United and a move from powers DC United to upstart side Real Salt Lake in Major League Soccer, Adu - still just 17 - is still one of the biggest names in American Soccer. Though still the third youngest in the US U-20 squad, the Ghanaian-born sensation - who was invited by the Black Stars to take part in this summer's FIFA World Cup in Germany - has become every inch the team's spiritual leader after three seasons as a full professional with DC United, with whom he won an MLS Cup in 2004. Also, his status as a veteran of two FIFA U-20 World Cups (UAE 2003 and Netherlands 2005) as well as a U-17 world finals (Finland 2003) will have team-mates looking to the teenager for guidance.

Kiwis qualify for Canada

(FIFA.com) 31 Jan 2007

The victorious New Zealand team celebrate after booking their berth at the FIFA U-20 World Cup Canada 2007.

New Zealand have qualified for Canada 2007 after winning the 2007 Oceania Football Confederation U-20 Championship.
