Major League Soccer...is....10....years....old.

Did England start off in 1905 with the EPL, Championship, 1st div, 2nd div, conference, 20 teams per division, with relegation and promotion?

And not to mention that it's trying to exist and thrive in the most hostile environment for the sport of soccer in the world while competing with multi-billion dollar leagues who've all been around atleast for more than a half a century.

NFL
NASCAR
MLB
NBA
NHL

In Europe, what other sports really come even remotely close to giving Soccer a run for its money when it comes to the interests of the viewers?

America would easily be neck and neck if not better than Brazil in soccer if it weren't for the massive popularity and influence of the NFL, NBA, and the MLB. Most of the country's great athletes (aside from the Track and Fielders), are siphoned off by those three sports. So, if soccer was afforded a tenth of those sports' mass appeal, the MLS would no doubt in my mind be a top five league in the world.

MLS is not even a League, IMO. Four Reasons: 1. Only 12 teams 2. 8 out of the 12 qualify for playoffs 3. No relegation 4. No promotion.... You can call it Major League Soccer but that this still doesnt make you a league IMO....
league (leeg)
n.

2. Sports. An association of teams or clubs that compete chiefly among themselves.

Wow, did you see all the stuff in there about how many teams there should be in your league, how many should qualify for the playoffs and whether they should have relegation/promotion?

Whether you think MLS is a league or not, it has produced players who have consistenty beaten the Mexican players produced by the Mexican league in the last 5 years.

Dont even talk about the national teams because IMO both teams are in equal terms at the moment. Mexico beat you in el estadio Azteca (home) and the u.s. beat mexico at Columbus (away).

And we beat you in Korea. If you want an indication of how the leagues stand in terms of player production, look at how many former American MLS players now play in European leagues versus the number of Mexicans from the Mexican League. Off the top of my head, I can think of Beasley and Gibbs in the Dutch League, Friedel, Bocanegra and McBride in the EPL, and there are several players in the Scandanavian Leagues at the moment. As for Mexicans, I can only think of two: Borgetti at Bolton and Marquez at Barca. Now, maybe I'm missing some guys, but it seems that MLS is doing a pretty darn good job of developing players, in relation to the Mexican League.

Another thread that has dissolved into a discussion about MLS itself.

I say we ignore the next person who brings up points that have been extensively been debated (and proven wrong).

I just want to ask Flyer one question...

How many years must a league exist before we can talk about how crappy it is? U always bring up the age of the league to defend it, so tell me how long u think its fair to wait before saying its crap?

You have a valid point about you guys having more players in Europe than we do but that's not to say that we don't have any talented players or aren't developing any. The main problem is that our clubs make it extremely difficult for any of our players to go over to Europe by asking for outrages transfer fees when the opportunity arises. I'm pretty sure we'd have more players abroad if it weren't for the fact that Mexican clubs are greedy bastards. Just thought I'd mention this.

You're not developing better players than us, maybe "more" but not better.

Paul has said this over and over, but if I have to repeat it. In the Mexican League, players earn very good salaries compared to MLS (16,000 dollars is lowest salary) or even Brazilian/Argentinian League. The reason why not alot of Mexican players are playin in Europe (example: Blanco, Arellano, Torrado, Sanchez) is because they basically earn the same amount that they would earn in Europe and they probably wouldn't be guaranteed a starting spot like what happened to Cuahtemoc at Valladolid. Santos of Brazil tried to offer some amount under the 3 million dollar contract that he has w/ Chivas so he rejected going to play for them if it mean not getting another chance immigrate to the old continent.

This week Carlos Vela will travel to England (mainly) then to other countries like Italy, Spain, and Portugal to see if he gets a contract offer. Apparently the best offer so far is from Arsenal and Chelsea...his reasong for going to Enland first.

I doubt the US will have "that" many more players than Mexico after the '06 WC, (Salcido, O.Rojas, J. Corona, are some player we'll probably see in Europe.)

Its just not fair to critisize a young league.

The MLS will be a great league when we have:
-20 teams
-a soccer-specific stadium for each team (imo, max 20,000 seat stadiums) Crew, Galaxy, Chivas, FC Dallas have one. Metros, Fire, RSL have one coming. I dont mind Spartan Stadium for the Earthquakes. DC, Kansas City, Revs, Rapids need to start planning now. I hate the idea of MLS teams playing in football stadiums.

and the most important one:
-better attendance. I want to see the stadiums filled for every game. Nothing less than 15k for every game.

We will have to wait around 10-15 years for this.

I think he should be starting every game too, but why didnt he wait untill after the playoffs to start complaining?

And The Bruce should wait untill after the World Cup to call him in. Theres a number of attacking midfielders that should get better looks before Freddy Adu.

I think a team needs a stadium that's a total hellhole, those are the best.

I'm serious, they make for intemidating atmospheres.
