Err, is that true Dennis? Cause if so, id be intrested to hear more (that was a campaign which I have researched intently in the past...which brigade was he in?)

Oh, and does the generic use of "Holland" not refer to the fact that Belgium was once known as part of the "Netherlands" from like the 14-15th century? (I'm thinking specifically of it being called the "Austrian Netherlands")

I'm not sure if this is true but I think most of the world calls The Netherlands Holland because of the past. In the 18th century ruled the seas, we had the first mulitnational company in the VOC, the shipping company that brought products from all over the world to the Netherlands. That company was from the province Holland.

The Netherlands, Nederland in dutch, actually means the same as pays-bas; "under land"; below sea level. Technically Belgium is also part of those nether-lands, lands below sea-level, but Belgium split from "Holland" and became a new country.

The correct name for Nederland, in english is the Netherlands nowadays.

I reckon Denis' grandpa was a part of the failed military operation Market Garden. Perhaps he fought for the bridge over the Rhine river in Arnhem, now called the John Frost brug in memory of general John Frost.

I lived in Arnhem, the military history of the city is very interesting, as well as that of Oosterbeek, a small town near Arnhem. The land around Arnhem and Oosterbeek is filled with intersting militiray history, many museums, graveyards etc. etc. Every year the dropping of the airborne divisions is remembered on the "Ginkelse Hei", the place where the 1st British Airborne division and the 1st Polish Airborne divisions were dropped. It's always a very impressive day. Those veterans who feel up to it actually jump out of planes again, just like they did some 60 years ago!

I prefer "Netherlands", it sounds cooler.

PS: Danimal, are you from the same place as Johnny Heitinga? lol

Close, but not close enough.....Leiden is 10km. away from Alphen aan de Rijn where Johnny comes from. However, I used to work for Ajax, so I've seen him plenty of times and he's really laid-back.

It doesn't matter what anybody prefers, The Netherlands is the official name of the country, Holland is wrong. End of story.

Your thought was right, just not the era it took place: we're talking 1800's here already: make it 18-19th century.
