I am used to it.

I love arguing with people about how they say baseball is a much better 'sport'

In a related topic, who would love to see Jim Rome die ?

He just simply does not understand the sport, I do however listen to him ALOT (or used to at least) but whenever he starts talking sh*t, I simply change the station for the next 5 minutes untill he gets done making a fool of himself.

Self-proclaimed "clone". :(

Firstly, I was going to start a thread bitching about ESPN's lame ass coverage if this wasnt here

people who dont understand should know that Fox News = the journalistic equivalent of avian flu. Where else could someone essentially claiming worldwide love for football is a manifestation of lack of freedom of choice, and have it published? Where I ask you? Only on the rightwing

As an American I can tell you that you are waaaaaaaay off. That's much too complicated a reason. MikeyM I think has the right idea but his post was long. Basically it comes down to this:

1. Americans look at the scores, 1-1, 0-0, 1-0, and they think it's boring because it's 90 minutes and they barely score.
2. In America there is the stereotype that soccer is a sissy sport.

Sportscasters here only reinforce these sentiments. Hotshots like Jim Rome (the Bill O'Reilly of sports) have shows where they act tough and assertive and say soccer isn't a real sport. Furthermore, starting in high school, the fans go to the basketball and football games, facilities are poor for the soccer games, and all of the girls go for the football and basketball players.

There's an ignorance towards soccer here that is deeply entrenched and will only be reversed when sportscasters start giving it some respect and stations start showing more games.
Good post, mostly agreed, but to me the reasons are more complicated than you list. Ive had this debate with college footballers and I emphatically insisted that soccer would never reach the heights it has around the world, not in our lifetimes anyway. They insisted that the amount of talent coming up in America would reverse that trend.

Im not going to go into it any further. Just know that 90% of the Americans I know and have met will never understand the beauty of a perfectly timed cross or the joy of a 90,000 person cauldron singing songs and waving banners that have been a part of a club legacy for a century or more. They wont understand and I almost prefer to keep it like that

Well Football is starting to get big here.
Isnt ESPN playing all the WC games?
I dont think espn playing the games is a sign of anything. ABC did last time. Sportscenter had to drum up intrest by asking Julie Foudy to compare footballers to nba/nfl stars just to dumb it down that extra bit. The last slap in the face was claiming Landon Donovan had Steve Nash like passing and vision

Dont give him any credit. Jim Rome doesnt understand anything about sports, ever. He is almost as big a douchebag as Woody and his BSDM buttslave Skip F*ckhead, and rome only wins because he is sometimes humerous.

Typical Rome segment
"Unless youve been living in a cave in afghanistan for the last few weeks youve heard about (big sports story). Now, I dont know who (name) thinks he is, but you expect us to believe that crap youre feeding us in the media. (Overblown and rehashed conclusion a monkey could come to). Even Ray Charles can see what (name) is up to. (CRICKETS). Nice try big man, but you aint gonna fool the old Romey"

two weeks later the same athlete comes to his show and Rome lays down a verbal rimjob. I cant understand why he has any credibility. He's just loud and outspoken, which makes people ignore his bullsh!t alot like, yup, Fox News.

What an idiot :nape: , thankfully i dont think like he does.

People do have a lot of things to choose from, whether its the NFL, NBA, or Major League Baseball, soccer gets overlooked by many people, I hope that the USA does well at this World Cup, because maybe that can change, unfortunately im not so sure that it will so much.

And while yes i have over 200 tv channels i spend most of my tv time watching soccer (and hockey too, but thats another story).

F*ckin ignorance...

I just send the douche an e-mail, here it is:

Hello there Mike Straka,

I just finished reading your littile piece of the upcoming World Cup, and I though it was one of the greatest pieces of literature I've ever read.

Before you pat yourself on the back please realize that I was being sarcastic, I'm sure you picked up on it, or did you?

In all seriousness you can't believe that soccer is so hugely popular because other countries can't afford plush baseball diamonds. Remember that baseball is played by poor children in countires like Cuba, much like soccer is all over the world. I know you don't give a damn about soccer but please don't patronize those of us who do. The wolrd would be a better place if you quit writing about soccer and continue with the bs you usually write about.

Imagine a world where idiots like Mike Straka didn't't write useless columns about how America is too good for soccer.

Just imagine.

Sincerly,
Luca Vella

FOOTBALL. what is the one & only popular sport- FOOTBALL. basketball? voleyball? no thats what we only care about.

The matter is that out side United States you can choose other sports, for example in Brazil, handball and volleyball. But what if you like football is it a crime to choose it? After all isn't the democracy of United States founded in what a majority wants? But eh these fellas think that they are the only ones that live in democracy or can choice even, and we are talking about sports here.

Well, there's certainly no reason to feel sorry for anyone in America. I'm an American, and only a soccer fan in passing. I'll call it soccer because that's what it's called here, my apologies. I played for a couple of years when I was young, but it's just not a big deal here. I think I can name a few reasons why.

First off all it's an iconic thing. American kids don't see Soccer stars as their primary idols in sports. Most big name collegiate athletes are far more well known than any American soccer player. You're average MLS player makes no more than your average successful college graduate in the U.S. In America, where you are so motivated by finances, that is a big deal.

Another reason is soccer is only conducive to one type of athlete, trim, speedy, with a lot of stamina. Personally I grew out of it. I'm 6'5, over 300 lbs, and I was always a big kid. Someone my size fits much more naturally into American style football or even basketball than soccer. I played three sports growing up, I was always athletic, I just wasn't designed to run around for 90 minutes. The NFL has a place for anyone. Tall with a good arm but not very mobile? Play Quarterback. Shifty and agile? Play runningback. Big and strong with good feet? Offensive line. Big and strong with explosive burst? defensive line. Small and fast? Defensive back or wide reciever.

Another thing is the flopping/diving. I know it happens to a lesser extent in every sport, but when I was growing up it was epidemic in the soccer matches I saw on TV. A game where a significant path to goals was to fall down like someone had shot you in an attempt to influence the ref seemed kind of weak to me.

Now I'm not going to try to convert people, because you love your game and I love mine, but american style football is a much deeper, more complex game than soccer. I know a lot of the appeal of soccer is it's simplicity, but some people just prefer a game with more of a strategic aspect to it. In American football there are substitutions after every play, with different tactics and strategies fluctuating throughout the match. It's really a chess match within the game. Soccer is so freeflowing that managers really don't have the impact a coach or coordinator has on gameday in the NFL.

Another reason soccer is not a favorite in America is you do not have the jaw dropping athleticism you have in the NFL or NBA. You do not have a 6'10 240lb guy jumping over another 6'7 guy. You don't have a 320 lb wrecking ball running over someone to spring a running back, or a 250 lb linebacker with sprinter speed crushing a reciever going over the middle. Soccer is free flowing and creative, but you don't have the sort of physically dominant athletes you have in the NBA or NFL. There is no Shaquille O'Neal equivelent in soccer.

One more aspect is how independent and competetive Americans are. If you watch sportscenter here, the highlights are basically examples of one person asserting their dominance. A running back running over a linebacker, a wideout leaping over two defenders and scoring, Shaq dunking on someone's head, someone hitting a 500 foot homerun. Those are iconic images of one person imposing their will on someone else. In soccer the only real example of that is someome one on one with the keeper, and the fact that it's not on Sportscenter every night is a big reason it's not as popular.

At any rate, I'm not trying to disparage soccer. I just watched the first two world cup games, and I enjoyed myself. I am very much looking forward to watching England tomorrow and the U.S. on Monday. I would love it if the U.S. could advance and then give Brazil a good game, if only for national pride. I am not a soccer hater, and I hope the MLS grows enough so the players can get paid and U.S. soccer can compete at the highest level, because there's no excuse for Americans not to compete at the highest level at anything. With the size of our population, the diversity and opportunity available, and the rising popularity of soccer there's no reason our twenty best players shouldn't be as good as anyone's. We just haven't developed that feeder system yet that other countries seem to have. That's one thing about Americans that I dislike, people are notorious bandwagoners. If the U.S. becomes a winner, support will explode, but making the quarterfinals at anything is not going to draw the average American in, no matter how impressive that accomplishment was, because Americans are spoiled, and feel they deserve to be the best at everything. That's why we work ourselves to death and change jobs every three years. It's the same reason the MLS hasn't been embraced fully, it's considered a second tier league around the world and it's hard to cheer for anything in this country that is considered second rate. It kind of sucks being in a country where you're supposed to be favored at everything, when the US made the quarters people basically just shrugged because that result is a disappointment in most sports. It's kind of sad really.
