I do feel sorry for any football fan in America

Another reason soccer is not a favorite in America is you do not have the jaw dropping athleticism you have in the NFL or NBA. You do not have a 6'10 240lb guy jumping over another 6'7 guy. You don't have a 320 lb wrecking ball running over someone to spring a running back, or a 250 lb linebacker with sprinter speed crushing a reciever going over the middle. Soccer is free flowing and creative, but you don't have the sort of physically dominant athletes you have in the NBA or NFL. There is no Shaquille O'Neal equivelent in soccer.

And here's another reason why football is popular too, you don't need a specific kind of build to play. How many skilled dwarfs are there? And how useful are tall players for set-pieces?

I see what your saying, but I'm referring more toward how in soccer players absolutely have to be lean and fit, because of the huge amount of stamina it requires to play. There is no room for the stronger, muscular guys in soccer. Even the guys who are supposed to big and strong in soccer wouldn't be considered big and strong in the NFL. You could never have someone with Shaq or Dwight Freeney's build as a soccer player, even though at 330lbs and 5'11 255lbs respectively both are world class athletes. I've heard people say players in the NFL aren't as good athletically as soccer players, but they're different. Soccer players have the stamina, but the NFL is full of 250lb guys who run with almost world class speed over short distances and can bench press 450lbs. You can't say either one is better, but because of soccer's focus on stamina you just don't get those big, explosive athletes.

I actually feel sorry for any soccer fan in the U.S. that has to watch the World Cup through Univisión which claims to be a Latin-American channel but is completely Mexican oriented!
A lot of the programming on Univision is from Televisa so that's why its very Mexican oriented.

And yes, Carlos*ie Guerrido is awesome, what a MILF. (H) :hump:

They should just come straight out with it and say "we are a mexican channel"

The Legend
Titanic, I grew up playing American Football, I was a wide receiver and kickoff returner. I still watch it (I go to Panthers games when finances allow, but thats kind of hard with NFL tickets), but I can't play it. I became disilliusioned with it when I relized how rigid it was. I guess the rigid structure is cool with some people. In a way I can see how it represents the status-quo of American life. I respect the athletic ability it takes, I have a friend who's trying to play arena football and he works his ass off trying to get in shape.

I always dabbled in soccer when I was younger, I started playing more as a teen. I found that it gave me alot more freedom than the other sports I played (except maybe Basketball), even when I was drafted in as a left back they let me bomb up and down the wing as I pleased, unless we were getting attacking heavily (obviously).

I guess it was the informal introduction to sports I had. I never went to camps or any of that (hell, the way I got faster as a kid was running from dogs) I was often noted as "lazy" when it came to the various drill exersizes we did in gym (i'm kind of like Iverson, heh), so I lack basic fundamentals that I have to make up for with grit and personal flare.

I just don't understand why sports writers and tv/radio "sports experts" are so desprate to hold back soccer's potential growth. If you see a soccer fan going after another sport it's typically because they're seeing red after hearing another diatribe from one of those journalists. Especially the ones who favor baseball, something tells me that the average soccer game has as many shots as the average baseball game has hits (their main arguing point is always the lack of shots). I don't care for baseball, but if I had a public forum I wouldn't rip into it. As stated in this thread, I'm beginning to think alot of it is racially based. I mean, you really can't find an article bashing it without a jab at europe, latin america(ns) or how poor africa is. One just last week said that INS should be deployed to areas with high World Cup viewership and the latinos in that area rounded up and deported. I shit you not!

I don't know if you remember Carlos Kemp, it's easy to forget him given how soundly his ticket (Dole/Kemp 96) was defeated. But in the 80's he passionatly debated against the United States hosting the 94 World Cup, he was literally shaking with anger at one point. Obviously, we ended up hosting the cup, which brought millions of dollars from foreign sources into the American economy (not American dollars cycled from one city to another like out major sports finals do). This is the kind of thing that bothers us, not the other sports. I mean this is a man (Kemp) who would deny the economy a massive cash injection just to hold the sport back. You can see why we get so easily wound up when people follow in his footsteps.

We could deal with more people like yourself who actually watch the games and support the national side tho.

That's crazy about Kemp, I've never heard that before. Most of these guys would be happy to host a neo-nazi convention in their disctrict if it meant more revenue.

Anyway, I do like soccer. It's enjoyable to watch, just like most anything done at the highest level. Add the fact that teams are playing for national pride and the fans are nutty and it's absolutely must see TV.

There is one more thing I thought of why it's not huge in America. So much of sports here now revolves around sports talk radio. Maybe I'm naive but I don't see all that much you can talk about with Soccer. The statistics aren't anywhere near as deep as baseball's or basketball's, and the strategic component to basketball and football I mentioned means there's a whole lot more to second guess a coach for in those sports. In those sports the coach is making decisions constantly, and each and every one of those decisions will be talked about incessantly for hours on end the next day on talk radio. Soccer you don't really have situational substitutions because of the sub limit, and you don't have nearly the kind of strategic maneuvering that you do in the sports that are big in the states. So much of what we love about sports in the US isn't the game itself but the arguing and debate that occurs before and after it. Just a thought.

Yeah I read that article,

http://www.twincities.com/mld/twincities/news/columnists/14741693.htm

That is just ******* discraceful.

Well, I'm sure it was a joke, I doubt anyone would actually be serious about something like that. Our politicans do nowever need to get their heads out of their butts and secure the borders(not just the southern one). A country can't exist without border security, especially when millions of the residents of Mexico are already here and 52% want to come here. I have no problem with immigration, but you have to do it legally. It's not fair to people in the rest of the world who want to come to America and who spend years on waiting lists at their embassies for people to just pour over our borders and skip ahead of them, and it's not fair for Mexico's corrupt government to send tons of their people, primarily poor, uneducated laborers, to America so they can send money back for them to skim off the top. And don't get mad at me, there's no reason for the Mexican economy to be in the crapper, other than their own incompetent leadership. They have oil, excellent vacation spots, a hardworking populace, and favored nation trade status with the biggest economy in the world. Add in the fact that Mexico's own immigration laws are approximately 242,000 times more stringent on their own southern border than the USA's and I find it hard to conjure up any sympathy.

Anyway, /rant off.

One of your points about football not being big in US was that it's not very suitable for big muscular guys. I tend to agree, but honestly, what's the average ratio of heavy strong lads like yourself against people with average builds or even wimpy ones. They are minority everywhere in the world, well, not if we count just every other fat person as ''strong and muscular''. :) I never been to USA, maybe it's different there, but certainly not in Europe.
And there's a signifcant amount of tall, extremely athletic players in football that do well. Just look at the whole NT of France. Theyr international success is largely influneced by physical advantages, especially when it comes down to defence.

As for european football not being tactical in comparison to american. Sorry, but that's complete bull. The fact that in NFL after every minute of action play is stopped and you need to follow substitutions and managers/coaches drawing schemes and yelling at the players do not necessarely make the game more tactical rather than annoying to watch. I still see rugby and american football as very repetitive sport to watch when comparing not only to football (soccer), but also to ice hockey, basketball, heck, even handball and volleyball. It's just big tough dressed up guys ganging upon each other, struggling for the oval following by someone getting clear and trying to make touch down or field goal.
There are many many evidences in history of how a manager can make or break the game. Greece winning the last Euro was all about strong discipline and smart decisions by Rehhagel leading the all in all mediocre (no offence to greek friends) team to the biggest throphy in the Europe. Yes, football is much more free flowing and managers/coaches do not interrupt the play every two minutes to call the plays, but that doesn't mean they're not orchestrating the whole tactical layout of the team's perforamnce.

As a young American male playing football and preparing to play football in college, I can tell you it's hard. First of all, I have to play on a club football team next year, most Universities don't even have NCAA sponsered teams, but then again, not very many kids even go to college and I am. So wtf am I complaining about? Second of all, a lot of people bash on the general American population because of their attitude towards football, but what about the Americans that love the game? We're pushed away by our own country and by others. What a position to find yourself in. The world stopped spinning June 9th, but not in America. Life rushed forward as is typical in our culture while a few of us hung back only to wonder what it must be like in other countries. I can only savor the carnival atmosphere. I see more emotion playing Fifa WC 2006 on my Xbox than I'll ever see over here. I went to a sports bar yesterday and tried to get the baseball game changed to the football game. I thought I opened the gates of hell judging from the response I got. Trust me, I feel very much left out. It's like I missed the biggest party of the year. So before you finish bashing on the majority population of America, think about us football fans who scream and cheer our asses off in our quiet living rooms because there's just no other place to watch the game.. :nape:
