There are countless ex-players where we don't know their staff qualities. To us the ones selected are many times random.

Yeah but those make a little sense. You'd think a great player would be a good teacher/coach (but often not, as we know). A better example is why is Aitor Karanka Real assistant manager...

Karanka was doing a good job at Spain U-18 NT when was hired by Mourinho, he's a former Madrid player and does everything Mou tell him to do.

Yeah, other than learning and following orders I don't think there's much to the job of being an assistant to a coach like Mourinho etc.

I assume you've all seen this, but I hadn't.

I figured it was only Marco, but Mou is crying just as bad. I heard a rumour that Mou wants Marco as an assman if he comes to Chelsea, thought it was ridiculous until now.
yeah, it was Mou, not Matrix, who was balling hard ... shocked really that you haven't seen this before, given how popular this clip was ... but maybe it just seems that way to me, since I follow Italian football so much more closely ...

this clip has a quote which describes the role Matrix played in the Inter dressing room:

"the Italian soul" of the team ... I've always found him to be a dumb brute, but there is something in his personality that comes through as a genuine love for the team, and allows him to have an influential presence in the dressing room ...

that said, the clip also shows the extent of his English skills, despite (or possibly because) of his time in Merseyside ...

Hey, that was filmed in LA. I was at UCLA when Inter was training there with Mou in preparation for the 2009-2010 season. There wasn't a lot of interest from the Americans on campus, so I managed to witness a couple of training sessions from the sidelines with a couple of European friends. A very animated and very blonde Interista from Milan managed to talk Mourinho into that. A Belgian friend and I babbled with Maxwell and Chivu for a bit about Amsterdam. Ibra was kind of distant (and much more popular with fans and stuff). Good times.

Funny thing is that Barca came to UCLA a week after, right after Ibra transferred from Inter to Barca. So he was there twice with different teams in a matter of weeks. Barca training was all closed though, unfortunately. Managed to catch a few glimpses from Messi.

Dug up a few photos:

And Barca through a fence:

@Shifty: Yes, but only on an exchange for the fall semester/quarter + the summer sessions.

1) You should have looked up Joe! He was working there at the time.

2) Walked through what appeared to be the main mall area one day in the Spring of 09 and it was a pretty great campus environment, I thought. Maybe a little more condensed and crowded than the University of Wisconsin, but the year round good weather definitely makes up for it. Definitely a school I could have seen myself going to.

3) You definitely picked the right place to be an exchange student at. I wish I had the money to do that when I was in school.

I did a lot of my summer research internships at Berkeley ... no footie stars walking around Nor Cal campuses, unfortunately ...

Jeroen: pics looks great, and you clearly got to see a lot ... any other anecdotes to add to the one about the Milanese blonde and Mou?

Haha, I got to know the Milanese blonde by just waiting for the Inter players to start their training. He was a very mouthy Italian lad and kept bugging Mourinho about winning the Champions League. Mourinho was just winking and sighing at him and what do you know... Mourinho delivered. Balotelli was also around, and the blonde guy was the only one to get him to put off the headphones. I think Balotelli even gave him a signed boot. Very funny.

There were also some NFL players doing their individual work-outs there that summer. Chad Johnson and Shawn Merriman for sure. I think Chad Johnson also entered the training field with Inter once.

But yes, I loved my months at UCLA. There wasn't a lot of academic pressure on me to perform (everything was going fine), so I really got to enjoy every moment and a lot aspects of the UCLA campus and LA. The only negative was that I wasn't 21 yet at the time and I didn't feel like taking a risk with a fake ID.

I actually went to the UC Berkeley summer sessions the year before in 2008. Definitely helped me get into UCLA.

By the way, I think Joe was before my time on this forum. I only vaguely recollect him.

Oh that's totally the wrong move on the fake ID! You're foreign! Bouncers never see foreign IDs much less can differentiate a real one from a fake one. My friend from Hong Kong had a fake ID that NEVER got questioned; he was a full blown problem alcoholic too, so he was at the liquor store or bar literally every day for like 3 years until he turned 21.

Yeah, it's probably my main regret. I didn't think about it until I was there and in LA my fellow Europeans were only able to get fake California ID's. Their quality very quickly faded so they ended up not being able to use them very long either.

I lived in an apartment building on Gayley Avenue right next to a couple of fraternities houses. As a European these frat parties were definitely as much fun and interesting as a regular club or bar... or I wouldn't know. Booze aplenty in any case!

College parties are better than bars. And you get to go to bars all your life, but college parties only while in college.

with all forwards except Rocchi out, and injuries interspersed across the remainder of the pitch, Inter's season is definitely going down the sh!tter ... it's probably chapter closed for Strama too come the end of the season, considering there's no Europe, let alone Champions League, to stave off all the Blanc/Bielsa talk ...

That's a real shame, because I really like managers who are tactically carefree and adapt to formations accordingly as to the opposition's style of play. His introduction of a trident upfront (3-4-3) to combat Juve's defence trio for the first time this season in their 3-1 win at the Juventus stadium won me over.
