wow, Antonio Damato really wanted to make a name for himself ... Inter got just as many yellows as Juve, but Sissoko was stupid enough to get himself 2, while Mourinho was smart enough to take Motta off at halftime before he got himself sent off as well ...
Juve started the match well, but didn't do much more than test Júlio César from outside the box ... Inter had one or two shots from outside the box (Motta's dipping shot drew a top save from Gigi), but were slower out of the blocks than Juve...
but about half way through the first half, Damato lost the plot, and started brandishing yellow cards left, right and centre -- in like 2 or 3 minutes, he had handed out 5 cautions! it was just silly officiating from Damato ... a derby like this match is already burdened with tension, expectation, and intensity, from both the players and the fans ... it is up to the ref to keep a cool head, and calm players down when they are over-exuberant with their tackles/reactions/protests ... but brandishing cautions like he did midway through the first half was the worst thing he could have done, and it was always going to be the case that someone was going to get a second yellow and go off -- and Momo was that individual ... I'm not saying that any of cautions weren't completely undeserved; but in a high-strung match like this, it is better for the ref that people are talking about the game, than a decision he made that changed the game ...
Inter should have run riot with the scoreline in the second half, but missed so many GOLDEN chances ... Eto'o and Milito (twice) were the most guilty, and their profligacy in front of goal was very uncharacteristic ... but Maicon produced something sublime to get the [by then] deserved breakthrough, showing world class skill to control the ball, pop it over Amauri, and then volley superbly to the far corner -- he's not the world's best right back for no reason, and finally produced a little overdue matchwinner for his side ...
to Inter's credit, they did not sit back after the goal ... they still went forward, looking for another goal to secure the points ... Super Mario Balotelli was unlucky to see his freekick cannon back off the bar ... and after all the glorious chances that were created, it was a miscued shot / cross from Muntari that gave Eto'o a tap-in to make it 2-0 ... that was a slightly more deserving scoreline for how the 2nd half went (though I still think it should have been at least 2-3 more) ...
anyway, a big 3 points in the derby, and a not too difficult run-in to the end of the domestic season ...
now the focus will turn to that epic semifinal match-up against Barcelona; I, for one, can't wait ...
