Language problem hinders Redknapp

Starting XI
Portsmouth manager Harry Redknapp has expressed his frustration at trying to communicate with several players who have little or no grasp of English.

Redknapp told BBC Radio Five Live: "It's a crazy situation. We've got three people who can't speak English.

"What is the good when you have got people and you cannot even tell them what to do?"

Redknapp also believes his squad has a lack of balance as he tries to save Portsmouth from relegation.

"I've had three positive performances from them but I can only work with the hand I've got and it's not balanced," added Redknapp.

Colombian midfielder John Viafara came on as a late substitute in the 1-1 draw with West Ham and Redknapp said his cameo in the game summed up one of the major problems at the club.

"With 10 minutes to go, I bring on a boy and tell him to mark the near-post space at a corner because it's a vital position," he said.

"He runs on and goes somewhere else because he doesn't speak a word of English.

"It's sad, it's a crazy situation - what are you supposed to do, draw diagrams for 20 minutes? "We've got three players here who can't speak English. It shouldn't happen."

Redknapp said although he was not going to concentrate exclusively on signing British players, he wanted anyone he brought in to have an idea what to expect.

"I'm looking to bring in players who have played in Europe and understand the game and who know what hard work means.

"I want players who know what it means to Pompey fans to try and stay up."

There are ways of overcoming this obstacle. Redknapp should come up with a finger-sign language system or something instead of complaining.

I guess his time is limited to save Portsmouth from the drop,so maybe this is just another frustrating obstacle to overcome. Its down to the clubs to help non English speaking players with English language tuition anyway.Maybe his comments were a dig at Perrin for not initiating the tuition.
I agree with him that it is a ridiculous situation though.

crybaby, if this was a problem, most leagues just couldnt buy foreign players.

what's with this mentality that everyone in the world has to speak english, while the majority of people that have english as their mother language can't speak any other.

I dunno. Maybe because Portsmouth is an English club, with an English manager who speaks English.

Oh man.

This isnt about the world speaking English.

This is about players in the English Premier League, speaking English at an English Club that is managed by an English manager.

English is one international language that most countries use in the world. Perhaps it'd be better off for players too to learn English as an essential way to overcome. They don't have to speak English fluently though, just learn the basic words that are on soccer terms...

He speaks english... :)

Does he ? I think I remember reading in some newspaper when Benfica signed him he couldn't express himself very clearly.

But maybe you're right. One way or another, still a legend in my book. :rockman:

IMO it's vital for a team that everyone speaks atleast the football language of that country. Good example is Roda JC here, the mostly line up 10 foreigners, coming from all parts of the world (from Hungary, to Brazil, to Ivory Coast), and their organisation is awful

You think he's bad? Try listening to Rooney or Carragher...
Do you know where can we listen to/watch the post-match interviews or the players interviews on the net? I want to listen more and improve my listening-to-English-speaking-English skills as the channels here dont show many of them.

Sometimes I use nicam to listen to the English commentary when I am watching EPL but it is quite boring comparing with the Hong Kong commentators. :p

Unfortunately I have no idea where you can find post match interviews, sorry. Try BBC or searching on google or something. I dont think you'll learn anything from Rooney though, the damn kid speaks his own language.

LOL
I have watched the Manchester United "Play Like Champion" video and I found that its quite difficult for me to listen to Rio Ferdinand. And Sir Alex Ferguson is also quite hard to listen... But I think Giggs is quite easy to understand...maybe he speaks a bit slower. Rio speaks quite fast :p

When I watch interviews on TV then I realise the big difference between written english and spoken english... Its sometimes hard to understand the English and US people even if you've learnt english since primary school... I guess this is because our mother language has a great impact when we talk and listen to english. Here in Mauritius our english is like s*** compared to our french :) even if english is our official language... :o

BTW I think you can watch interviews from www.skysports.com. I'm not so sure about it though. I never tried it.
