Starting XI
Life of Pi - Don't really know why i hadn't seen it before. It was a bit stretched, would have been better if it was shorter. A lot of unnecessary scenes. I almost turned it off after the first 15 or 20 minutes, because all of that religious stuff. But it got better over time. So overall it was okay i guess.

Watched some other stuff as well but they're just not worth mentioning.

I saw three Oscar-nominated movies so far ( The Wolf of Wall Street, 12 years a slave and Her). Her is my personal favourite. Deep, very moving picture. Almost fell in love with Scarlett's voice.

Yet to watch 12 years. The other two were both ok. I don't think either were spectacular. Joaquin was really good in Her though, but that said he does seem to play most of his characters in a similar style - even if they are very different characters

I saw Monuments Men last night, other than some nice sets depicting the destruction of the war, not much to recommend. The good cast were hampered by a mediocre, predictable script and undeveloped characters, the comedy was both weak and undermined what could have been otherwise effective tragedy. Even for an "art guy" like me, this pushed no buttons.

Wałęsa. Man of Hope

Nothing special, really. The only thing worth mentioning is the main role played by Więckiewicz. The best Polish actor right now, able to play anything.

Cloud Atlas. I don't know why but I like the Wachowskis, I even enjoyed Matrix 2 and 3 despite everyone just completely trashing it like it was the worst piece of garbage ever to come in movie form. This one is decent, not the best movie ever but an enjoyable flick.

I'm looking at DiCaprio's filmography and I don't get all the fuss about him not getting an Academy Award. He has made a lot of great films (or a lot of big productions at least), but on the occasions when he's really pulled off a great performance, there was someone more deserving. I mean, surely no one thinks he merits one for Romeo+Juliet, Titanic, Catch me if you Can, The Great Gatsby, Inception, Shutter Island, The Departed. I dunno about Django, Revolutionary Road or J. Edgar, haven't seen them yet.

He wasn't bad in any of them, but he certainly wasn't outstanding. I can't even recall his performance in Blood Diamond, but I do recall Whittaker being quite good in Last King of Scotland, so I get that. He was good in The Aviator, but was unfortunately up against Truman's Capote, which I haven't seen but I've never heard anyone say anything bad about Truman in it. In Gangs of New York Day-Lewis got nominated, which makes sense. Finally, he was very good in Gilber Grape, but, fuck, he was up against Fiennes in Schindler's List, and Fiennes didn't win either!

Kid news to pair up with a different director. I mean, with Scorcese he'll do lots of great films, but Scorcese has a long losing record in the Academy Awards, too. That's assuming he wants an award, of course.

I disagree with you and I believe his acting in The Departed was top class and clearly worth an Oscar. Those scenes with Carlos Nicholson were amazing.

Let's face it, he just needs to follow Ricky Gervais advice...

Can you just pay attention to the face of that Leonardo Di Caprio idiot! At 0:09-0:10, he is clapping and then bowing his head because he knows that he could never have come up with that kind of line if he had to. Ricky Gervais could make such an embarassment out of him. He looks such such a donkey. And then I am supposed to say that he is a great actor (liar)?

He is really so over-rated - if it were not for Titanic, all of us would be better than him.

Fool.

Saw it yesterday. I had too high expectations. The movie was a fun Scorsese type film but didn't have much substance. It was pretty predictable too.
