Went to see Children of Men over the weekend - really an excellent film. I did think it was going to be good, and it didnt disappoint, a great new take on the dystopian vision with some fine acting and amazing camera work, with the whole film shot entirely on one camera. Some of the ideas raised were a bit heavy handed and the ending could have been a bit more satisfying, but it was top notch entertainment with some resonating ideas. One of Clive Owen's best performances to date and solid stuff from Julianne Moore, though Michael Caine totally stole the show with his amazing supporting performance as an aging hippy in a nightmarish future. This film is an absolute must see, will definately make my top 10 films of the year.

Yeah, it's quite something. I didnt find out about it until only just before it came out, so it was a very pleasant surprise.

Just watched Terry Gilliam's film, The Brother's Grimm, on DVD the other night. I love Gilliam's work, but this one got panned by the critics and failed at the box office, so I wasnt sure what to expect. It was a good film with some excellent sets and great, over-the-top acting, especially from Johnathan Pryce, but I really dont see how anyone justified spending $60m on it and how they ever thought it would make a profit. A lot of work has gone into the film and it is really quite enjoyable, but at the end of the day, the wishy-washy plot and frequently walked over territory means it was never a film that would linger long in the memory. However, it's such a shame to see such a large, expensive film with so much talent involved doomed to universal two star reviews followed by complete obscurity - it's not brilliant, but it deserves better.

Final Fantasy: Advent Children.

All the characters are back which is a plus side at the end. Sephiroth is still a bad ass villain.

I feel like I want to re-play again in FF7. (Y)

they spent too much money on the FX work, that was the problem with the movie which wled to Gilliam´s problems with the studio.
the FX turned out great at the end in the sequence where Belluci gets killed with the mirror and all that stuff.
agree about the movie. liked it enough, but it deverved a better reception by the critics and moviegoers, though we deserved a better movie too

Yeah, that's about how I see it. I think it started out as something bigger - Depp was originally supposed to play one of the brothers and I think the original script was very different and much more coherant. Gilliam and another guy actually substantially rewrote the script, for the worse by all accounts, but couldnt be credited due to writers union rules. I got the impression that by the time the film actually got rolling, everyone was so fed up with the project, the constant changes and each other, that neither the director or the backers could really be bothered with it anymore. I think the money was written off before it was even made.

Watched Alan J. Pakula's 1976, "All the President's Men" last night. Top notch political thriller with Hoffman and Redford in great shape.

Talking of great thrillers, I watched Five Fingers the other day, awesome WW2 spy story starring the ultracool James Mason - really underrated film, a total classic.

I have to say, Advent Children is brilliant for fans of the game, but AWFUL for non-fans.
