Kanouté Assaulted In Togo After Mali Win
Mali and Sevilla striker Fredi Kanouté was assaulted with a belt after his country's 2-0 win in Togo...
Mali secured their qualification for the African Cup of Nations with a 2-0 win in Togo on Friday, but reports have surfaced indicating that Fredi Kanouté is still recovering from injuries sustained after a riot on the pitch.
The Sevilla striker opened the scoring for the visitors after 37 minutes before Mamadou Diallo netted a second in stoppage time.
Following the final goal, some home fans threw missles onto the pitch, with a section of the Togo support also invading the field of play, attacking Kanouté and others.
Kanouté was hit with a belt and has since required stitches for his wounds, while Mamadi Sidibé of Stoke City required medical attention after a cut to his arm before the players took refuge in the dressing rooms.
Mali coach Jean Jodar told L'Equipe, "It was like a battlefield. In the changing rooms, there was blood everywhere."
The incidents came just hours after the Togolese Football Federation (FTF) encouraged home fans to come out and support les éperviers peacefully, warning the supporters that acts of violence would be punished by law.
