Manchester United Make Rooney Bid

Manchester United have confirmed they have made a bid for Everton striker Wayne Rooney.

The offer is believed to be £20million, which would match Newcastle's bid for the 18-year-old England striker.

United are waiting for a response from their Barclays Premiership rivals.

A Manchester United spokesman said tonight: 'I can confirm we have made an official bid for Wayne Rooney - and we have not had a response yet.'

And boss Alex Ferguson added on MUTV soon after: 'We've made a bid today - he's a fabulous player, he showed that at Euro 2004 - and is a young player.

'He's not the finished article yet, but we've got experience of bringing young players to the club and bringing them on.'

Everton have rejected the bid after doing likewise with Newcastle's offer of the same amount.

The news may now prompt Newcastle to up their current offer of #20million for Rooney.

Magpies chairman Freddy Shepherd had said earlier today he was willing to let time wind down as the closure of the transfer window approaches.

He said: 'We have made our offer to Everton Football Club and it is still on the table as far as we are concerned.

'There is still plenty of time before the transfer window closes and Everton can pick up our offer any time they want to.'

Shepherd has proved himself a tough negotiator in the recent past, although he may need all his powers of persuasion this time around if he is to prise 18-year-old Rooney away from the Toffees - particularly with United's interest now confirmed.

Everton insisted today that there had been no increased bid for the player and manager David Moyes is adamant no club will get him at a reduced price, if at all.

'We don't want to lose Wayne, but if we do, the only way is at the top price and the value we want,' he said.

'I would like to quote Bobby Robson's words: `You're talking about buying the most exciting, brilliant young player in Europe'.

'If that is what Sir Bobby thinks, then he's got to pay the most exciting and brilliant price because his current valuation is well short.

'Didier Drogba went to Chelsea for #24million, so Wayne's price should be well more than that. He's English and if you want to buy English, you have to pay a higher premium.'

But with time running down to Tuesday's deadline, it could come down to whose nerve holds longest with the Rooney camp yet to speak publicly about the bids.

The Toon are going to bid 27 million so we will have to beat that.

I think we'll offer 30 million.

Anyone think that we will include a player with that aswell?

I can think of who we would include now that Diego has gone.

I guess Ferguson may not go for Tevez because he is probably afraid he'll be a flop in England. I guess if he is that desperate to bring Rooney in, he should, but I see it as a major waste of money. There are players out there under 30m that are going to perform very well and would be better options than Rooney.

I bet we could poach Martins. For 15m. Or 30m, we may as well try our luck at just taking shots at Adriano.

Damnit....waste of $$$...
but then again, Man U's PLC aint gonna spend money on last minute buys unless they are well reputed...

20~30M for Rooney however is way too much....

I think this is a mistake. They could just buy Tevez or something along these lines, Rooney is good but he's overpriced.

even Bellion, why do they need Rooney?

I wouldnt go that far at all, Bellion isnt a Manchester United player.

I think Rooney would be a good addition and I fear if he's bought then Smith would play RM sometimes? But those 4 strikers are very very good and I think it would be fierce competition. However I think one may leave if Rooney was to be bought. Saha or Ruud..

He can only get better at Man United or a bigger club than the Toffees.

We saw what he can do on the big stage and he will shine at United under Fergies nurture. He knows that too.

I'd say its likely that Manchester United will win the race as its no secret that Greater Manchester alone has more brothels and parlours than Newcastle.

"Manchester United can't buy Rooney. The most famous and richest club in the country can't buy him!" Robson said.

Who the fuck does Robson think he is? I would've loved to see that old senile cunt's face in the post-match interview on Sky when he found out about United entering the race.

Tevez would easily get a work permit, he's already a regular in the Argentina NT.

Ferguson may know what he's doing... but we have no clue of what he's doing at all bidding for Rooney when he should be off trying to get a winger.

Reading what Moyes said about Rooney made my blood boil. An "English" player, so he will cost a "premium". That's more insulting to any club trying to buy him. Well fvck he can shove Rooney up his ass. If we should go for a Brazilian who will score 20 more goals and cost 1/2 the price, then would it not be more practical, rather than falling into Moyes' jibes?
