I think it was Fergie's blunder that cost us that, not just that of Carrol. Trying to switch from 4-5-1 to 4-4-2 in the middle of the second half against a team of Milan's calibre is dangerous.

It unsettled the players when subs were made, esp ronaldo coming off, leaving fortune in the middle, then shifting wes brown into a RB position, stupid move, and throwing in a new central defender like Silvest, who has nerves of brittle glass right into the action. Rooney shoulda been subbed off for Ruud and that should've been that.

As some of my friends are saying, I think Sir Alex is obsessed with trying to win the CL again, and he's changed our style of play. I think now he thinks that we should play like an Italian team, and today we played like mini Milan, only Milan are better at playing their game.

From 3 years ago onwards, he's been obsessed with Catenaccio, and I dont mind that tactic that much, but sometimes you just need to gun it and hope for the best. That may explain some of his bizarre team selections. That may also explain how we manage to own Arsenal so much.

I'm sure he'll get it right eventually.

gawd carroll sucks. the guy has no idea how to catch a ball, why the hell is he kneeling down to catch it on his chest for? loan carrol out to a rugby team and play him in the full back roll so he can learn how to catch a ball for crying out load.

i would have sub'ed fortune for van not ronaldo. milan played it smart double teaming him every time he had the ball.

fair play to milan, their mid field ruled for long periods, although united were unlucky to not be 2 up in the first half.

I was also disappointed he took out Ronaldo, probably due to "inexperience"? Come on, the lad has played in the Euro 2004 FINALS.

And Saha.......... his head is like a magnet :| gets nailed on the head by a defender as soon as he comes on for like the 5th time this season.

Help?

Yeah and the funny thing is that, every time he plays he has white powder from goalkeeper gloves on his head. lol. Even yesterday, he just came into the game and a second later, already got some white on his head.

ronaldo was doing very well i thought considering he was being double team the entire time. he made 2 great runs from the united half when he was out of position.

and since i cant say it enough...

... carrol SUCKS!!!

Along with Carroll's fuck up, taking Ronaldo out was our next biggest mistake. He was providing all the spark we managed to conjure up. Taking Rooney or Giggs off would've been a better option as they were both non-existent, especially Giggs who I had expected to give both Milan's full backs a torrid time.

Carroll has had his good moments (and lucky ones) but he is a backup keeper at best. He was well beaten in the first half when that shot hit the bar.

I'd disagree with the point about taking Ronaldo out is a mistake. We have to remember we still need these players for our future campaigns. Perhaps they had a knock.

Ronaldo to me wasn't that effective last night. he had a so-so game. Someone had to be substituted to let Ruud in.

Gary Neville probably had a knock, thus Silvestre was put in. Then Saha was subbed in for more attacking power.

So all in all I wouldn't say the subs were really that wrong.
Our system worked alright.

The problem was we couldn't put our chances away. I was very disappointed when Scholes missed...
and of course, our keeper really is below par.
sad. I remember Van Der Gouw as a second backup keeper was so much more reliable. it's so sad because all other posititons did their job. Keano might not be as fit next year for the champions league.

We have to, have to make this campaign count. Come on you REDS! I was to see Turin 99 once more!

Anceoletti has already remarked he remebers Turin 99. this is going to be really tough.

Ronaldo was our best attacking player by a country mile, while Giggs was abysmal to say the least.;)

ronaldo didn't deserve to be taken out when he is in such good form atm

well i guess the best thing for the team is for ruud to get fit again so we can demolish them in the 2nd leg

yup. ruud has a 2 weeks to get some games under his belt and get back up to match fitness. when he came on he was causeing all kinds of problems for the Milan defence. we needed him from the start but SAF was right, you cant start anyone who aint played in three months. they might play top quality for 30-40min but would fade later in the game. shame really.

ronaldo shouldnt have been taken off, he was handling the double team pretty good i thought. i would have rather subed fortune for ruud. but i guess you cant take giggs or scholes off, since they are more proven match winners than ronaldo is.

ah well, the game is onyl half over. we should see a major improvement in the next round.

The great point is that if we win the 2nd leg, we won't lose.

If we win 1-0 there is extra-time, shootout
If we win with any other score than 1-0, we are in the next round. :D

But how hard will it be to win at San Siro? :(

I didnt see much of the match, but if Giggs was so bad, and Ronaldo so good, why was the latter the first to come off? Was he wearing out? And I already posted it in the game thread, but I think United had a decent chance in the second leg. With your talent up front, im pretty sure you can get at least one. I think the big issue will be shutting the door defensively, espcially if Sheva is back.

Oh, and it may be in the thread somewhere, but can I ask why Fortune was playing? That kinda surprised me, to say the least.
