Reds wait on Rio rib injury

United could be without Rio Ferdinand for the decisive second leg against Arsenal after the influential defender headed to hospital on Wednesday night.

The centre-half left the field a few minutes before the end of the European champions' 1-0 victory, having taken a blow to his torso as the Gunners pressed unsuccessfully for an equaliser.

Ferdinand sustained the injury in a ruck of players when Arsenal substitute Nicklas Bendtner headed over from a Cesc Fabregas free-kick, the nearest the visitors came to breaching the Reds' rock-solid back line.

"Rio got a crack right on the ribs and we hope there’s nothing broken," said Sir Alex Ferguson.

"If you get a rib injury, you could be out for two to three weeks maybe. We just have to wait for the (hospital) results obviously."

Jonny Evans came on for Rio to help the Reds complete a priceless clean sheet and the young Irishman is now set to deputise for at least Saturday's league game at Middlesbrough.

ManUtd.com will publish news of Rio's injury as soon as it is confirmed on Thursday.

I just hope that he comes back as early as possible, Rob.

Thats old news, from yesterday ;)

Still waiting for the scan results to reveal whether there's a fracture or not.

Btw Fergie said he's gonna make some big changes for the game against Boro, so I don't expect Ferdinand to play whether he's fractured his rib or not. fergie's not gonna risk him.

Yes, matey, I know that, but Rob just asked for an update, so I tried to help him.

As you pointed out, eitherways, SAF is not gonna risk Rio in the Boro game.

Its really shame that somone's injury makes you happy and you wish 4 that. Coz you know you can't win it fair and square.

I never said I was happy. You misinterpreted my statement.

Just because a player gets injured, doesn't mean that its not fair. All teams have injuries. You're club is not special in that regard.

It could affect our tactics and team selection for our game because, as I'm sure you know, we have our own injury problems to deal with.

interesting, you don't have any match against us, so how ferdinand's injury can affect your tactics and formation?

assume he is out three weeks, then you play 4-4-2 against newcastle!!! your answer was a complete joke.

We might not have to play Gerrard for a full 90 minutes. He is just recovering from his injury...we might play 4-5-1 with Kuyt/Torres.

Some sources are saying that its just bruised ribs, not fracture. In that case, he'll be back for the second leg

When the defender underwent an X-ray yesterday afternoon he was found to have suffered only bruising and swelling. He will miss United's Premier League visit to Middlesbrough tomorrow but there is a chance he will be fit for the second leg of the Arsenal tie on Tuesday.

Ferdinand was already feeling much better by late yesterday and the results of the X-ray confirmed his own initial conviction that the damage was not as severe as the pain had suggested and that he would be fit for the game at the Emirates Stadium.

Not sure how reliable is that though.

Relief over Rio injury

United received a major boost ahead of next Tuesday's Champions League semi-final second leg against Arsenal, with the news that Rio Ferdinand has a good chance of being fit.

The influential 30-year-old defender, who was forced off after a blow to his torso in Wednesday's 1-0 victory over the Gunners in the first leg tie, won't play agianst Middlesbrough on Saturday but may make the trip to the Emirates Stadium.

"Rio's scan revealed no crack or break to his ribs," Sir Alex confirmed. "There was some bruising to his lung, which is why he coughed up blood on night.

"He is definitely out of Saturday's game against Boro, but we're hopeful for Tuesday against Arsenal.

"We should be able to get him training again on Sunday, but he didn't training today (Friday)."

Again, Tevez told the press about his desire to leave United coz he wants to play more. I think Fergi can convince him that he can get more playing time by rotation. I think if he goes to Spain he can't get more minutes than he had in United this session.

Barca - they've henry, eto'o, messi, bojan, goui, hleb (just look at hleb)
Real - Raul, Higauin, Huntelaar, and Ruud
unless he goes to Atletico Madrid, Valencia and Sevilla.

In Italy Inter is a candidate, they've cruz, Ibra and Mario. But Tevez can play good number of matches there.

he scored 13 goals in 42 matches (which he came as a sub as well). It would be a big shame if he goes but he should be careful about that because United will find a good player to replace him but can he find a better club in terms of success and appearence.

Fergie. :)

Anyway, Tevez is seemingly on his way out of Old Trafford - It doesn't much look like Fergie wants to sign him for the quoted price in anycase. Today's name by the way is Karim Benzema of Lyon. I don't think Carlos will entertain the idea of Citeh or Liverpool due to loyalties to United's fans.

We've already paid £5mill a year for the loan for 2 years. So would just have to pay the balance of £22mill, from what i've read.
