Maybe if JT had have started by sleeping with the enemy's other halves, England would have won a tournament already.

Yeah, players never get muscled off the ball or go up for headers.

Not all the players need to get muscled and there are better jumping exercices simulating game situations.

Pushups and running around the pitch are not a quality training.

lol. You want to see the benefits of a pushup, take a look at Valencia. The defender are bouncing off him. Pushups also strengthen your core, which strengthens your back and surely you understand the benefits of a strong back for a soccer player?

I get the whole "it's better to develop game speed or game strength" but it's purposely ignorant of real life. You can get much fitter doing interval training or doing bench presses and then apply that strength to the game. You want the physical abilities to translate to the game, obviously, but you also want to make players maximize their physical abilities and their strength; going up for headers or fighting defenders off the ball can never be as beneficial as pushups in terms of developing strength for those future situations. Every other sport utilizes non-sport strength/physical training... are all those sports wrong, or is the Pep way purposely ignorant?

i don't even see what's the argument about. Every team uses weight lifting and gym workouts as part of regular training. Pushups is part of strength training, the benefits are as clear cut as they can be.

Does anybody actually think that you can be a top soccer player simply by running and doing drills on the pitch?

Mourinho/Rui Faria doesn't. Only gym workout if the medical staff thinks it's good for injury recovery.

So you truly think that Real Madrid players don't workout on the regular? I guess Ronaldo just got big by getting pushed around by Ferdinand and Vidic.

I guarantee you Ronaldo spends at least once a week in the gym. Maybe Angel Di Maria doesn't and that's maybe why he hasn't improved in 3 years...

Nope, they don't do any exercice without ball (which doesn't mean they don't do physical workout). Other thing is if Ronaldo goes to the gym in his free time.

Ok, that's true.

I guess its pointless for us to argue about this, neither will agree. Ronaldo and Valencia spend time at the gym and the benefits of this are evident. Maybe guys like Di Maria and Ozil don't and they seem to have had marginal improvement to their game, since coming to Real.

Di María greatest weapon is his agility and if he gets big would lose it. Him and Özil had improved a lot under Mourinho and there are many other examples (Maniche, Deco, Ferreira, Lampard, Drogba, Sneijder, Milito, Motta, Benzema, Marcelo etc...)

Oh please. Devin Hester is the same height, 50 pounds heavier, and way more agile than Di Maria.

Maybe professional managers think drills with the ball are better uses of scare training time, but I'm sure they would encourage weight lifting in their players "free time" on a good regimen.

I liked Ozil pre-Madrid days much better, he played better at the WC 2010 too.

Those guys have acquired great stamina, but they didn't get to where they are without lifting weights.

I may be baised to my knowledge of Chelsea only, but has Mourinho developed any younger players who actually continue to improve after he leaves, following the initial improvement in fitness/ball control?

Just from the top of my head, it seems like he provides a team with initial maximazation of skill, but few years after the team becomes old and in need of major revamp. Can't think of any long-term development strategies that Mourinho has instilled.
