If you want to go around the defence, use wings, also both your strikers are out wide anyway and can control the ball well, and it'd have a better effect than long balls imo.

you mean your games scheduled for 10. It won't be played until tomorrow. Damn delays! :f***:

I'm still waiting for my game from 10am this morning to be played.

From my other 2 games so far I've lost 1 and drawn 1. Although this was using my tactic for the last sim, and one I threw together in about 3 minutes.

Oh, that 1-1 draw ... in the end, not bothered about the result that much ... the goal conceded was sloppy and shouldn't happen again, hopefully. And on another day, my forwards should score more. Main thing is scoring chances, and despite playing away, my team created almost three times the amount (5-14 in my favour), which should see my team score more really ... and win. So fairly pleased, except my keeper isn't doing that well. He came out of goal twice against Hotello's team and let two in (like against Mount), and then two long shots over him, allowing them four soft goals ... so despite scoring five good goals, it was closer than it should've been. :S

was that with the new sim too? I think I read on the forums something about stupid keeping mistakes.

I didn't really take a look at our game, but I reckon 1-1 against a Premiership team is pretty good even if I was outplayed! ;)

won 7-1 in first game of new sim

Started jumping around my room

then saw had lost the second 4-1

oh well maybe I'm not THAT lucky

Ash, your goal was scored the same way the first two conceded against Hotello's team was. My keeper came out of the goal ... argh. It was on the new sim, both games. It occured on the old sim, but didn't happen that often, seems to happen a lot more now, though. :S

If it wasn't for that, I would've won, but ... meh. Happy with the general performance if not the result.

Anyway, here it is...

Sorry Rami - I was engaged in a top-of-the-table battle in Total Club Manager. Right, time to get cracking.

Defence

I really don't know what you're trying to play at here. If I was playing three strikers, on long ball, I would win. Just because of that. Your #3 and #5 are too far up the field - Or your #12 is too far back. If you want to play with a dropped off defender, use 3 at the back, and a sweeper. And keep them as far back as you can. Alternatively, bring #3 and #5 back to the edge of your penalty area, and then move #12 forward, so you will have something like this:

Code:
       12
   3 5

#12 would attempt to break down attacks, and would be your main defender, whereas #3 and #5 would be covering for his mistakes or attacks out wide.

Midfield

A funny midfield. Similar to the layout of Sven Goran Eriksson's diamond formation.

I won't ramble on too much, but you will want cover for #12.

Code:
6 8
     14 17

Try and shape your midfield up like that. Keeping #14 and #7 just ahead of the segregated line, and the flankers can be as tight in the centre as on the edge of the centre circle, or out wide.

Attack

Pretty much what I would have, however drop your #11 back a bit more. Possibly have the bottom of his shirt sitting on the dark green line.

Strategy:

You're still playing a 3-4-3, just slightly more balanced and tighter.
Code:
   X X
_____X_____
 X X
___X___X____
     X
   X X

It's a 4-3-3 - cum - 2-1-4-1-2.

Mentality Defensive. Possibly venturing onto using normal, if you're not scoring enough using defensive.

Style: Use your wings, or long balls.

Aggression: Aggressive.

Just curious as to when you're giving advice about tactics, you keep referring to "counter-attacking". Do you mean "Use wings" ?

Apart from that this threads great!

Yes, I do. Although you may use long-balls.

Anyway, after a bit of tinkering I'm trying the following in tonights friendly. Mine's at 10pm would you believe, so any advice can be taken in before then :)

Strikers have good ball control to receive the ball, and should have enough stamina to keep going. Trying to go more around the defense than through it :)
Guy playing in the whole has excellent ball control and can win the ball.
Two guys just behind to clear up anything before it gets close to the defense.

Using Wings/Offensive/Normal.

Any possible improvements?

Defence

You've got it my dear lad! The back five are perfect. What is your defensive record like, as it may be worth swapping to two centre-backs and three centre-halfs, instead of the three centre-backs and two centre-halfs which you have now.

Midfield

I don't understand what #6 is doing.Stick him on the segregated line which seperates attack and midfield, but keep him as a midfielder.

Attack

An opposition using a three-man defence will limit your #9 and #10' chances. Tighten them up slightly by moving them slightly closer to one-another

Strategy

5-3-2 is defensive formation - Certainly attack.

Style: Short passing as your players are nicely packed together. You have no players on the wings, and with such little support from the midfield and a sparse attack, with long balls you would effectively be losing posession and then defending again.

Aggression: Normal as you have a lot of players crowding your back lines.

My brother today played a team using the 4-3-3 and he won 4-2 and won scoring chances easily. I dont know how people are saying the 4-3-3 is the best tactic still as its not from the matches I have seen.

I remain unconvinced.

I won my Grand Mountain Cup match today using the 4-3-3. My 2nd best result yet - I won 11-0. :(

Maybe your team is much better then the teams that you are playing. I just think that the 4-3-3 is much less effective then it used to be. I have beaten 2 4-3-3's with my tactic with the new simlulator and my brother beat one.

You praised myfatcats tactics UpTheIrons.

His tactic is exactly the same as mine except everything is pushed up more, Though you had lots of suggestions on how to change mine but not myfatcats.

Also can you post a pic of what you mean by segregated line which seperates attack and midfield?

Just for the sake of this thread and because I love seeing UpTheIrons (whoever that might be :)) help our little community, I posted my tactics to see what he's got to say about it (a simple diamond midfield strategy). This thread has also been made STICKY

EDIT: Just to mention, my strikers all have over 5 stamina and my midfielders over 4, using short passing and have won every match since the new simulator using the same tactic.

I've found that the 4-3-3 pushed up defence is still effective, but only if you have the players for it. And I mean more so than the old sim - I've only seen the top Swedish clubs use it really effectively.

It'd work for me still I think as I have a seven speed defender for example, except when playing Hawkmoon (Lindgren with 10 speed) etc. so when I play them again, I won't have a pushed up defence (not that I do now, anyway, my defenders are in the same place as Blue's ... aka the tactics I use on friendlies ;) ).

I know alot of top teams that use the same tactic that Blue uses and it seems pretty successful. I might try that and see how it goes for me sometime.....

Bluecoaster

Reserve Team
I like it, even if more and more teams use it, but it's not always the same, some use a bigger diamond with less height and more width, plus the tactic is realistic, as many RL teams also use it.
I picked it up when Chris told me he beat Montana FC 5-0 with it...sadly I lost the game 2-0 because I didn't change that :P

Thanks Chris

Ok, I'm really annoyed with the stupid keeper bug on this sim now. In my Cup game, I had 8-4 SC, yet lost 0-2. How can they score twice from half the amount of chances I had, if my team can't score at all?

My team are / were top with 8/8 wins, they're midtable out of ten teams, and my forwards have 7/8/9 shooting. Oh yeah, this is how, they scored after 5 minutes because my keeper came out, started to go back, changed his mind again and came out, and let it in. :| Then a shot from 20 yards flukes its way in and that's it ... argh.

I'm leaking goals and now losing important games because of this. :S

Chris - I saw a couple of matches with that new sim and more than 50% of goals looks like that. I think it's not because of keepers... they were acting very stupid also with old sim in this kind of situations, but with new sim there is much more situations like that because of:

The goalkeeper's interaction with the ball has been reviewed and changed. Saves, where the ball bounces back to half the field will no longer occur.

With old sim after goalkeepers save ball would be bouncing good 20-30 meters, and now they "tweaked" it, so it's not a problem for strikers to rebound the ball and exploit stupidity of keepers in this situations. It's boring and very annoying :/
