Disappointed Ballack Salutes Italy

A marvellous match was deadlocked at 0-0 after 90 minutes and extra-time also looked unlikely to separate the two sides after the Azzurri struck the woodwork twice.

But then in the last two minutes Italy made the breakthrough, with a 119th-minute strike from Fabio Grosso and an Alessandro Del Piero chip in the 120th.

The defeat was especially hard on Ballack, who had missed the 2002 final against Brazil because of suspension.

"It just is not meant to be for me," said the midfielder who has just joined Chelsea from Bayern Munich.

"It is very bitter for us to get eliminated like this, one minute from time. It is bitter but not undeserved.

"We started out rather slowly but did a much better job in the second half.

"The game was well-balanced. The Italians had the better chances in extra-time as they hit woodwork twice. But we also had some good opportunities afterwards, with the header (from Lukas Podolski)."

"It just is not meant to be for me," i feel so bad for him :(

The German magazine "Der Spiegel" has published an article concerning the future of the nt, I'm gonna sumarize it:

- Matthias Sammer would take over the team in case Klinsmann resigns
- 7 players are still eligible to play for the U21 team
- 5 players of the squad are above 30, Nowotny, Neuville and Kahn are expected to retire
- Schneider and Lehmann, if they stay healthy, will make it to the Euro, their form's not declining
- Friedrich and Hitzlsperger don't have the class to be called up again

The new candidates for the Euro squad:

There are plenty of young players getting first team football in the Bundesliga

Eugen Polanski (Mönchengladbach), Robert Enke (Hannover), Stefan Kießling (Leverkusen), Andreas Hinkel (FC Sevilla), Simon Rolfes (Leverkusen), Roman Weidenfeller (Dortmund), Andreas Görlitz (FC Bayern), Markus Brzenska (Dortmund), Tim Wiese (Bremen), Manuel Friedrich (Mainz), Matthias Abel (Schalke)
-----------------

Personally I think Hertha Berlin's 19 year old offensive minded midfielder Kevin-Prince Boateng could be the next youngster to have his break out season. His father is Ghanaian. His uncle played for Ghana's nt, his grandfather is a cousin of the great Helmut Rahn.
Keep an eye on him.

I would definitely add Kaiserslautern's Daniel Halfar and Florian Fromlowitz to this list. And what about Lukas Sinkiewicz? He nearly made it into this years team.

Let's quickly check the candidates.

Löw: did everything concerning tactics and training but lacks charisma to get promoted. Ask some of Bundesliga coaches if they additionally want to coach the nt with Löw doing most of the job behind the scenes.

Hitzfeld, Daum: would be great coaches no doubt about that

Sammer: his records with Dortmund and Stuttgart surely don't look bad

Rehhagel: too defensive minded, in love with old players

Matthäus: not respected by anyone

Yeah, Hitzfeld would be good. Daum or Hitzfeld i hope.

Should we also use this Thread for Bundesliga news? Bremen have a new Striker now, Almeida from Porto. A 1-Year Loan with Buy Option
