Herrera sucks? What?
Did you miss last game or the Olympics, Tuloun last year (player of the tournament), Concacaf qualifying, Pan Am games? Herrera is a great midfielder. He pushes the ball up, he can go wide, he can make that quick pass for the counter, he can shoot from outside with either foot, he can penetrate inside the box...
He's way more than we're used to at midfielder. All he needs is a hard working DM behind him and he is a dangerous player. It's exactly what Mexico needs. He didn't have a good season with Pachuca, but then again Pachuca sucks. He has inconsistency issues, but when he's on, he's one of the best on the pitch.
Salcido has shit for vision. Are you kidding? He might always be looking to make the pass but it doesn't mean it's the correct one or that he's a good playmaker. He isn't, and the team suffers because of that. Just because he starts play from the back doesn't mean that he's a good midfielder. By the way, how Tena utilized him at the olympics was not a bad way to use him, but he's a complete liability as a "playmaking midfielder.
Torrado is an improvement over Salcido, but he's just as bad at not taking care of the ball. He no longer is that pain in the ass midfielder that will press and press either. Age has caught up to him and he isn't a great passer nor good enough defensively to make up for aging. Torrado is basically a fouling machine that will make a good pass here and there, won't be ran out of place because he's experienced. But other than that, Herrera is much better, and I hope Chepo sees that. Then again, they're totally different players, but the way Mexico is set up, Herrera is the best fit.
The only way I see Torrado over Herrera is if Mexico needs an enforcer out there to play physical, because that's all Torrado can do well.
