they were (very well) paid for having these "commitment, passion and will". i kind of respect their "commitment, passion and will" but "admire" them... i wouldnt say that. also, i respect their "commitment, passion and will" as well as i do "the commitment, passion and will" of the people who have worked on the other movies... so, nothing special.
with so much money involved, it would be a shame if they couldnt make an award-winner movie.
and i dont have to admit anything.

i know it's a matter of opinion, but since you've asked, here are some: citizen kane, la dolce vita , apocalypse now, the godfather, orphée (cocteau's version), the great dictator, alphaville (godard), shichinin no samurai (kurosawa), casablanca, the third man, paths of glory, to kill a mockingbird, vertigo, blade runner, a clockwork orange, belle de jour...
only since 1990: pulp fiction, reservoir dogs, goodfellas, fargo, the silence of the lambs, being john malkovich, the usual suspects, the piano...
last year: dogville, mystic river, lost in translation...
it's really a matter of opinion, since i don't like lord of the rings. but i acknowledge its technical qualities.

Oscar is always about big budget movie which earns lots of $$$. It has never been about the cinematic art itself. I remember how pathetic it was some years ago when a gay movie like Titanic can win the freakin` award.
Screw the Oscar. Cannes and Berlin Film Festival rocks !!!!!

I don't think they went into these movies knowing it was going to be so big. And I don't think they all got "well" paid from the start. Who are most of the actors or actresses? I bet they got many bonuses if merch sold well, or if the movies did well.
I do think they had the passion to do these movies. If you ever watch the bonuses on the DVD's you can see it. Like when they do certain things in the movie that are in the book, and if you didn't read the book you wouldn't have any idea.. That takes alot of work and time. Plus I think most of them were fans anyway before hand.
And even with all of the money, they could have screwed this trilogy up very badly. When was the last time you saw 3 movies of the same subject, and had each movie get better?

didnt see the first two films, but i liked the third, except for the last 30 minutes that wasnt needed, i swear the two hobbits were close to kissing on numerous occassions

Lastly, I would be the first to agree that Mystic River and Lost in Translation (I haven't seen the others nominated) are better films than the third LotR movie - my taste anyway. But the other films were not up against the third film, they were up against the entire trilogy.

I dont think those 2 movies were better than RotK alone. ok, those 2 are extremely well acted. awesome stories and both with great directors. but I still think that RotK is in their league even though it doesnt have the powerfull acting performances.

I had this "are the hobbits gay" talk earlier today. I could sweat Merry and Pippen were horny for each other, and Sam had a serious boner for Frodo.
But, still good movies. And how could you miss the first 2 and just see the last?
