with so much money involved, it would be a shame if they couldnt make an award-winner movie.

and i dont have to admit anything.

I don't think they went into these movies knowing it was going to be so big. And I don't think they all got "well" paid from the start. Who are most of the actors or actresses? I bet they got many bonuses if merch sold well, or if the movies did well.

I do think they had the passion to do these movies. If you ever watch the bonuses on the DVD's you can see it. Like when they do certain things in the movie that are in the book, and if you didn't read the book you wouldn't have any idea.. That takes alot of work and time. Plus I think most of them were fans anyway before hand.

And even with all of the money, they could have screwed this trilogy up very badly. When was the last time you saw 3 movies of the same subject, and had each movie get better?

Something Star Wars can't say... Well, the last Indiana Jones was better than the 2nd.

Either way, thumbs up for everyone. None of those actors and actresses will ever be looked at the same again. They are forever from Middle Earth and their careers are probably over. :o

Oscar is always about big budget movie which earns lots of $$$. It has never been about the cinematic art itself. I remember how pathetic it was some years ago when a gay movie like Titanic can win the freakin` award.

Screw the Oscar. Cannes and Berlin Film Festival rocks !!!!!

only since 1990: pulp fiction, reservoir dogs, goodfellas, fargo, the silence of the lambs, being john malkovich, the usual suspects, the piano...

last year: dogville, mystic river, lost in translation...

it's really a matter of opinion, since i don't like lord of the rings. but i acknowledge its technical qualities.

those are all excellent and some are huge too. but just a few have the acting portion, story portion and epic portion of film that LotR has.

Pulp Fiction, The Usual Suspects, Being John Malkovick, Lost in Translation, Mystic River, and lots of those are acting and storywise amazing movies, but those movies were filmed in a city or small sets. for LotR they built castles. more that one. and thats why they got all the technical awards plus the visual effects awards. hope you know what I mean.

still, everybody has different opinnions so there's no problem with people not liking a movie. I did :)

its not like that. Titanic did win. but the other movies that year cant compare with it. (btw, I cant beleive that titanic made all that money, same for LotR and nobody here liked it :p)

and anyway, Epic movies usually win because they have more effort and work put into them. the movies are not all about the acting.

and though they ussually win, it doesnt happens always.
one of the best movies all time is Star Wars, which was revolutionary for the 70s, and Lucas lost the OScar to Woody Allen's Annie Hall. a movie probably filmed in Woody's appartment in NY. :p

100 % correct.

I know for certain that Peter Carlos*son negotiated a deal where his payment for the films would come primarily from a portion of the box office returns, so the amount he ended up with was dependent on people going to see the film.

Also, with the film being shot in NZ, costs were further kept down, since when the filming began our dollar was around US 40cents (although it is up to US 70cents now).

Furthermore, alot of the construction and battle scenes were undertaken by the NZ Army, who obviously don't have much else to do outside of Afghanistan and East Timor, plus hordes of volunteers were used in the battles as well. I doubt very few people could have made such an epic film on the budget provided.

Lastly, I would be the first to agree that Mystic River and Lost in Translation (I haven't seen the others nominated) are better films than the third LotR movie - my taste anyway. But the other films were not up against the third film, they were up against the entire trilogy.

I had this "are the hobbits gay" talk earlier today. I could sweat Merry and Pippen were horny for each other, and Sam had a serious boner for Frodo.

But, still good movies. And how could you miss the first 2 and just see the last?

I actually like LOTR series it's not the best thing I've ever seen but it is good much much much better than Titanic (piece of **** ahhhhhhhhhh **** dick balls). Anyway who cares about who won Billy Crystal was awesome, man that was the funniest Oscar nigth in a long time, I'm still trying to recover from the one where they had Woopy Goldberg hosting

I dont think those 2 movies were better than RotK alone. ok, those 2 are extremely well acted. awesome stories and both with great directors. but I still think that RotK is in their league even though it doesnt have the powerfull acting performances.
Seabiscuit is a great film too, I though it was too childish to be noinated for best picture. I would've preffer to get City of God nominated though I havent seen it, but I bet its a better adult movie.
Master and Commander for kinda boring. too much sea and the performances werent that good.

Yeah, just my preference for movies is the smaller, dialogue-oriented character explorations. But I think that PJ deserved the Oscar when the entire trilogy is taken into account. Take LotR out of the equation and I reckon Mystic River would have taken the Best Picture award, and other categories would have been more random.
