The problem as I see it is that Redknapp seems too intent on remaking the team entirely in his own image. This could potentially lead to doing a lot more work and spending a lot more money than necessary. Not to mention the decrease in team chemistry. The problem with bringing in "young players with something to prove" is that they aren't going to stick around if they do prove something. Unless they can maintain a top-10 finish next season all of their players will move on.
Totally remaking a side that was almost guaranteed relegation isnt such a bad thing. Theyre making their intent known with moves like this and players will sit up and take notice. If a signing like this somehow backfires on Portsmouth, which I doubt seriously, then that is no harm done to them being that they have money to spend. But even if he goes on and sets the world alight only to move on next summer, they have still demonstrated the ability for young, talented individuals to come in and be successful, and will then be able to attract more talent next year.

Portsmouth are in an excellent spot right now. I fully do expect them to maintain a top 10 finish, and even if they come close, I doubt their players just ask to leave because they know they are part of a process of making the team better and better.

How strange would it be to see a youthful, talented Pompey challenging for Europe in 3-4 years time?

Wouldn't really be strange. They have amazing supporters, and a plan for a new stadium. Mix this with the money and you have the makings of a fine looking club.

well, from near relegation to Europe would be a strange thing for me to concieve. I guess by then though I would adjust my expectations of what they could achieve. I hadnt heard about the new stadium plans. Apparrently there are plans for a "Pompey Village". (C)

I absolutely hate these mini-Chelseas sprouting up everywhere.

Manuel Fernandes went there for the cash and cash only. He'll play for a smaller club and will earn 6x more than what he makes at Benfica and as he's a kid, he doesn't have the maturity to see that he could wait another year or 2 and get an even bigger contract in one of the big guns in europe. Of course his agent pushed and convinced him to leave because he wants his cut.

I'm sure he'll be signed in a year or two by one of the bigger clubs in England.

What a waste of a player though.

you're so right...

it seems like this young players are so impatient to earn a lot of money, whatever it takes (even playing relegation when he could play the champions league staying in benfica...), and don't remember all examples of young promissing players who were forgotten after a bad move like this one... :nape:

or maybe, just maybe he wants the opportunity to play in a much superior league for a team on the rise as a stepping stone to joining a bigger club?

The tamborines... Portsmouth have a good manager. Let's see where they'll be at the end.

Portsmouth DO NOT have a good manager! :s***: Everybody says Redknapp is great but he simply isn;t, they also always say that hes great in the transfer market, HE IS NOT!! I would never give that man the amount of money that Gaydemak has given him as he will certainly waste it.

playing for Portsmouth is better for his career than playing for Benfica and in the CL?? You're either joking or clueless.

Much superior league? Portsmouth with the team they had last year wouldn't finish Top10 in the portuguese league.

Even Bolton couldn't beat the last placed team in our league. You're overrating the EPL and underrating the Portuguese league as usual but that's ok, we're used to it.

They had a team on the ropes until Redknapp took over the brought in some decent players.

There is simply no way of telling where they would finish in the Portuguese league.

As an unbiased onlooker, I have to say I hate the fool who is giving Portsmouth money, with a passion. They are a crappy little club who deserve nothing. Why couldn't he buy someone like Nottingham Forest.

considering the recent english teams vs portuguese teams clashes as an important indicator, i'd say it's stretching it a bit calling the EPL a much superior league and Portsmouth as a stepping stone club.

Personally I think Fernandes would of had a better chance of going to a bigger club directly from Benfica than Portsmouth, if only he waited another season or so. There he would have been in the main spotlight and had CL/UEFA exposure. I wish him and Portsmouth well, but I really hope MF doesn't fall into obscurity playing there. Pedro Mendes who is one of the best Portuguese DM's playing today has had zero chance of making it to the national team since going to Portsmouth, and look at Boa Morte who's argueably been Fulham's best player for several seasons now, still hasn't gone anywhere. That being said though, Manuel Fernandes is in a different category than those guys and has the potential to be world class, so who knows where he'll end up. He'll certainly have more clubs following his progress at Pompey, that';s for sure

english clubs? maybe

but Italian/Spanish teams, clearly no

the Champions League is a much bigger showcase worldwide for talent than a relegation fighting EPL club.

Not to mention the players around him would be much better at Benfica. Having teammates of higher quality tends to make players look and play better.

Dumbass! He's trading in free access to top quality Portuguese poon in Portugal for poor immigrant poon in Portsmouth..........when you're good and have got options, you should allow your penis to dictate where you play your soccer followed only closely in second by money.

Me, personally, if I was this kid? I'd be playing in the Arany Ászok Liga somewhere in Budapest.

The way I think of Portugal is like a more balanced version of Holland: to me it is the perfect "finishing" league for world class talent. If I was a manager who had just taken a big gamble to bring a young, raw, Aguero-like talent to Europe, I would turn around once I signed the transfer agreement and start calling portugese clubs to secure a loan deal. Holland is good, but to me, Portugal is far more balanced and realistic.

Now, I agree that Fernandes is probably making the wrong move if the options are Pompey and Benfica. Not only will he be getting extra games in European competition, which is even more valuable in its own right, but he will continue to develop in a system which he is familiar with, and play in a leauge where he is already a star. Coming to England will let him prove himself against the best of competition, and he might make a few jaws drop, but when you take away the extra games per year, and the fact that he is going to a team that is also going to do its fair share of losing, I have to wonder if this move is a bit premature.

But id rather see him there than solving the DM problem at Old Trafford

The EPL is like a blackhole for players of his ilk. I envision injury proneness, sexual identity crisis, flare ups with the coach, a little bit of cocaine use....etc, in his not too distant future.
