Premier League Abroad?

Just been on the news that Fergie reportedly has slammed the proposals, meanwhile the Football Supporters Federation (FSF) have started a campaign, known as "NO TO GAM£ 39".

This idea is stupid and I hope it does not actually happen.

If it becomes necessary to play games abroad then my suggestion would be the Community Shield. The tournament is only one game, played at a neutral venue (Wembley) and contested by top teams (Premier League and FA Cup winners), so it would be more accepted.

Blatent greed and commercialism.

This "plan", was a suggestion made by the Premier League, so as to judge public reaction to such an idea. Public reaction has been pretty much unanimous so far with the general opinion being NO.

The PL are attempting to sell this idea from the angle of promoting PL football around the World. The truth is that they only care about the football because it makes them money. They are not football fans, or they too would be disgusted by such an idea.

Newbie Original must be a little rich boy if he thinks that the average, REAL fans of an EPL club, would not have a problem funding a one match jolly to another country. Sounds like a "prawn sandwich" fans opinion right there.

All season we part with our hard earned dosh and spend God knows how much time supporting our teams. Already, we are being priced out of football, with less and less REAL fans being able to manage the cost of it all, and resigning themselves to watching their team from the armchair at home, but the PL do not give a crap about that.

From the billions that they already make off our backs every season, do we ever get considered by anyone? Do the fans actually benefit in any way whatsoever?

Now the EPL has reached saturation point. They know that there is a limit to how much can be squeezed from the fans here, and in anticipation of smaller, or at least less enthusiastic crowds at EPL games in the future, they want to take their "product" where more TV companies will pay for the privelige. They do not really care if the grounds are empty either. It's the TV money they want. The fans are only there to dress it up a bit for them.

The clubs hopefully will tell the PL to get fu<ked, and that will be the end of that.

I find this, as a lifelong fan of an EPL club, embarrassing beyond belief. I am also angry at the insensitivity shown by the PL, by hawking my club around the world like a box of washing powder.

This is OUR league. Everyone is welcome to enjoy it of course, but it is the English league, meant to be played in England, and that is where it should stay.

Just to add a bit of cynical comedy to the subject, the Premier League's wishes of hosting Premier League football in a foreign country could be fulfilled as early as next year......

.....if Cardiff City get promoted (H)

It's time for the English fans to put the squabbling aside, unite and get behind a cause.

This can't be allowed to happen.

Yeah, Cardiff City would solve every problem..

I personally think this is a stupid idea..why would it be good,if a Premier League game would be played in Australia? About 50,000 fans would see a good game if they are lucky..yay. Where does football benefit from this? This is only good for the FA what makes money from the 'brilliant' idea

The whole idea is beyond reason

in short, support Cardiff City!

There is more opposition than support for such a move. It's not gonna happen, so people can just calm down.

yup, thankfully people haven't gone out of their heads yet, but this plan is absolute bollocks and like mentioned in the papers should've been mentioned on April Fools Day....and i'd just like to have a stab at it XD

1. Think of the players, they have to travel across the globe for matches, which would result in the game being played between 22 jetlagged players, since the fixtures are already congested enough with cup competitions and international duties.

2. Think of the clubs, yes they will all get more money i assume, but would it be fair to clubs outside the top four? think about it, lets say, we have a home fixture for Villa vs Man Utd in Tokyo, we all know how big Man Utd are compared to Villa in terms of fanbase, so its likely going to be the other way around in terms of support. Besides, I doubt that Asian or American fans would want to fill in stadiums just to watch a Bolton vs Derby game.
And also, the fact that some clubs might have to travel a distance much further than some other clubs. Chelsea vs Reading, 24-hour trip to Sydney. Liverpool vs Newcastle, in New York (a mere seven hour flight away). Also, for relegation threatened clubs, £5million from a trip to Asia is scant consolation if your side loses £30million having been relegated as a result of drawing Manchester United or Arsenal out of the hat.

The idea of it is just ludicrous which ever way I to see it, i don't want to see the Premier League turning into a circus(Harlem Globetrotters??). Ok, so its done in America but why should we copy that? Football is a different sport altogether in terms of passion and support. If its going to be played abroad than it wouldn't be a domestic competition anymore. And, what about the local fans who give their support and money week in week out? I'm sure if the Premier League wasn't that big outside England this idea would even be considered at all. Its just rich farts seeing the opportunity to get even richer. Like Harry Redknapp mentioned, football owners were bakers, butchers and etc in the old days, now its not about love for the sport, its about money making business really.

But don't worry, it won't happen. I'm just here to give my opinion on why shouldn't happen. ;D

Yellow Card
Fergie, eh?

There;s a reason why the atmosphere at Old Trafford isn;t what it used to be.....corporate fans are making up an annually increasing chunk of the 76,000 capacity. Those same corporate fans WILL shell out WHATEVER IT TAKES to attend games, no matter where those games are, if they REALLY want to attend them. You're kidding yourself if you believe otherwise.

Anyways, it doesn't seem like it will be happening...anytime soon. But, now that the idea has been floated, it has gotten people thinking. It's only a matter of time........ it IS GOING to happen! It's really just a matter of the next step for the EPL....not matter what you say, it's a BUSINESS FIRST!

That's the only sensible thing Platini has said in the past few years.

As pede said, the clubs and their players are already overburdened with 38 games + two domestic cups, with no winter break (even a fornight would be sufficient but noooo) and the european competitions for the top clubs.

And seriously, who would go watch Bolton vs Derby in Florida?

newbie_original, they've only agreed to "consider" it. Nothing's been finalised, and if the backlash from the clubs is as it is right now then I seriously doubt this goes ahead. No way would the clubs unanimously agree to actually make this thing real.
