Pronounciation Motson !

When will John Motson and Ally McCoist finally learn to pronounciate the names of the players and teams correctly :p

For English and American players all should look fine, but when you're a Belgian like me it's just hilarious.
I've seen other games which Dutch comments, where English names are pronounced in English, French in French, Dutch in Dutch etc.

For example :
I'll list three names
Real Name - Correct pronounciation (in Dutch voc) - His pronounciation (in Dutch voc)

Some Players
Skoko - Skokko - Skosjo
Sonck - Songk - Sangk
Vanderhaege - Vanderhage - Vendehhajgue
Thijs - Tijs - Ties
Leenders - Leenders - Liendehs
Moons - Moons - Moewns
The 18 Belgian Teams
Anderlecht - Anderlecht - Endehlekt
Club Brugge - Klup Brugge - Bwoezje
Mechelen - Mechelen - Mekkelen
Genk - Genk - Guenk
Gent - Gent - Guent
La Louvière - La Loevjère - Loevuhhojs
Beerschot - Beerschot - Biehasjot
Lommel - Lommel - Lommèl
Sint Truiden - Sin Truiden - Sen Thojden
Lierse - Lierse - Lihase
Westerlo - Westerlo - Westeloe
Lokeren - Lokeren - Lokehun
Standard Liège - Sto'daar Ljèzje - Stenduhd Lojk
Moescroun - Moeskroen - Moeskuhoa
Mons - Mo's - Moas
Charleroi - Sjarlerwa - Sjahleroj
Beveren - Béveren - Bèvèwèn
Antwerp - Antwerp - Entwuhp

You might really see a difference, but I'll look for the phonetical differences if anyone might ask.
At the beginning it's funny but after a while it makes you want to put commentary off because of the irritation.

No, I'm no whiner or anything, but a little effort on pronounciation could be made, don't you think ?
At the beginning

Dont worry the pronounciation anonys me too.
Skoko, being an Aussie player (even though his name has a different origin) is pronounced completely wrong.
I cant understand how you wrote motsons pronounciation down of skoko, but in my version (he did the same in 2002 aswell), he says "Skoro" rather then "skoko" I think that he's read the k as an R or something..dunno.

But he gets Colosimo wrong too. He says "Col-oh-see-moe" and we pronounce it "Col-oss-i-moe"

Anyways there is always problems with game commentary..

Skoko - Skokko - Skoho
That's what it should've been :)
I couldn't remember it correctly
Great player by the way, one of the best central midfielders in Belgium at the moment.

But for you Australians, it's still ok, just a few errors, but non-English related languages are worse than you could ever imagin :)

since it is Motty id expect him to do his research (coz he always gets everything right) so i think its EA's fault. And im not Spanish, but he pronnounces Baraja "Ba-rye-a" i thought its "Ba-racka". And he says Van Nistelrooy and emphasises the T. sounds weird

3m1n3m

Senior Squad
He says

Jáo Pintou (João Pinto, Portugal and Sporting)

Nuno Gomez (It's Gomes, not Gomez! Gomez is Spanish!)

Muréra (For Daniel Moreira, Lens)

Ronaldíniou (For Brazilian superstar Ronaldinho)

Aluíciou (For PSG striker Aloísio)

Zaiovich (For Slovenia's Zlatko Zahovic)

Jong Uan (For Korea's hero Jung-Hwan Ahn)

Di Viau (Marco Di Vaio, Juventus)

Piriou (Andrea Pirlo, AC Milan)

And so many others... Never saw so many mistakes from the great John Motson... I hope he gets his pronouncing better for next FIFA...

Cheers

best (or worst I suppose) I have found is for tore andre flo, a player who motson pronounced as "flow" correctly and repeatedly for a number of years week in week out of match of the day, but yet calls "flew" in fifa 2003!!!!

Don't care because I play as leeds

in 1984 Terry became the manager of Spanish giants Barcelona, earning him the nickname 'El Tel'.

he says "ba-rye-a" for the Valencian playmaker, Baraja. Im not Spanish or anything, but shouldnt he say "Ba-racka"?

Motson pronounces the Kilmarnock player Paul Di Giacomo's name is Geeacomo when it should be pronounced Carlos*imo.

I'm amazed McCoist didn't pick him up on this considering he spent the last two years at Kilmarnock and probably played alongside the guy at some point!

The more recent variation is Ell Tel, with Leeds playing at Elland Road. This follows the line taken by the fanzine "to Ell and Back" and the club mascot "Ellie the elephant". We're not the most creative bunch so adding and extra "L" is quite clever for us!
