Ok guys, since we have heaps of circulation and praise for PES3 from some new people on our forum (give it another week, you'll love this game 10x more than today ) I thought I'd post a thread about a problem I see with some of you.
Namely, people are annoyed at slide tackling lots and getting carded.
Here's some help for you newbies.
Playing defense is as pleasurable as attacking in PES3, you can gain the same satisfaction from breaking down the attack of your opponent as you can when scoring.
pointers:
1. stay with your man, even if he has beaten you by a few steps, keep following by holding down x and relasing while sprinting. This way, you give temmates time to cut him off from the front. If you automatically (like in FIFA) change to the player in front of the dribbling midfielder, you will break your defensive line and be a man down in defense. If you do change into the player in front, do it by timing your challenge and make sure you see the ball. Press x when you can get to the ball without timing. If you mistime your standing tackle, you may get called for a foul (fair enough) or you may get burned by the skillful opponent.
2. Follow your man from the front. Don't rush into tackles , it's better to stay in front a few meters and force him to beat you, which is more difficult for him than beating you while you're running towards him. This way, you cut out the space for the through balls, your teammates have time to mark their man and you force the opponents player to make some magic happen. Also when he's on the side follow along and anticipate the cross, try to block all crosses.
3. Slide tackles ! Do not slide unless
a. you can clearly see the ball and will hit it
b. the player has hit it long
c. you're defending desperately and will take a red over a goal
slide tackling is an art, it is perfectly re-created in PES3. The good defender will rarely miss if you time your tackle, but the lesser player may hit legs even if the timing is ok. Be careful, don't do it from behind, you will get carded (fairly), timing is everything !!
Do it rarely, a last resort unless you have the 3 situations above.
It will take you a few weeks to fully realise the delicacy of defending and sliding in PES3, but its almost perfect and really is a marvel to behold when done right. When you get beaten playing good defense, you can only congratulate the other team for superb attacking....
hope this helps guys, keep at it...
