Slide tackling for PES3 newcomers(former FIFA players)

Ok guys, since we have heaps of circulation and praise for PES3 from some new people on our forum (give it another week, you'll love this game 10x more than today ;) ) I thought I'd post a thread about a problem I see with some of you.

Namely, people are annoyed at slide tackling lots and getting carded.

Here's some help for you newbies.

Playing defense is as pleasurable as attacking in PES3, you can gain the same satisfaction from breaking down the attack of your opponent as you can when scoring.

pointers:

1. stay with your man, even if he has beaten you by a few steps, keep following by holding down x and relasing while sprinting. This way, you give temmates time to cut him off from the front. If you automatically (like in FIFA) change to the player in front of the dribbling midfielder, you will break your defensive line and be a man down in defense. If you do change into the player in front, do it by timing your challenge and make sure you see the ball. Press x when you can get to the ball without timing. If you mistime your standing tackle, you may get called for a foul (fair enough) or you may get burned by the skillful opponent.

2. Follow your man from the front. Don't rush into tackles , it's better to stay in front a few meters and force him to beat you, which is more difficult for him than beating you while you're running towards him. This way, you cut out the space for the through balls, your teammates have time to mark their man and you force the opponents player to make some magic happen. Also when he's on the side follow along and anticipate the cross, try to block all crosses.

3. Slide tackles ! Do not slide unless
a. you can clearly see the ball and will hit it
b. the player has hit it long
c. you're defending desperately and will take a red over a goal

slide tackling is an art, it is perfectly re-created in PES3. The good defender will rarely miss if you time your tackle, but the lesser player may hit legs even if the timing is ok. Be careful, don't do it from behind, you will get carded (fairly), timing is everything !!
Do it rarely, a last resort unless you have the 3 situations above.

It will take you a few weeks to fully realise the delicacy of defending and sliding in PES3, but its almost perfect and really is a marvel to behold when done right. When you get beaten playing good defense, you can only congratulate the other team for superb attacking....

hope this helps guys, keep at it...

nice advice.
like any game you have to learn and master the tecnics and controls.
just give it a couple of weeks.

had just registered to post a question about this! only started playing pes this week, and have found the carding to be slightly annoying, as it was in iss. i take your points about the slide tackling but the cards are still a little harsh when miss-timed. in the full game is there any way of turning down the ref strictness? i've been enjoying trying to time my tackles just right and it feels good when you get one right. what is the better, or at least more effective tackle though, X or Square? i've been using square as its what im used to but it doesn't seem to do much where as X seems to give away more free kicks. any advice would be very helpful!

(Y) Great stuff

Also, after a while you'll be able to intercept passes with the slide tackle. Racing across and intercepting a through ball fully outstretched is brilliantly recreated and (like RL) hard to time correctly...the first time I instinctively managed to stop a ball that was going to put their striker in on goal I watched they replay over and over thinking, this game is sooo good :)

KaiserSoze666 square calls in the second defender, x is standing tackle ;)

x for standing tackle, [] for help....

ref strictness depends on the ref, like in real football. Sometimes it isn't fair, sometimes nothing is called, sometimes everything....depends on the day...annoying but then so is real refereeing ;)

I've also found that by pressing X and R1 when running alongside an attacker with the ball, you'll often give away a free kick (the attacker goes down like he's having his shirt pulled).

Once u gain a little bit more skill than u can start DOUBLE TEAMING. To Double Team just hold down [] button. This is of course if u know how to contain your man and than u can bum rush him with 2 players. Every time I play vs human I have an advantage as they dont even know this is possible.

Aha.. thanks for this advice, i was wondering why i kept getting sent off, :crazyboy: - but it seems the referee is more biased over england, i hardly got anyone sent off with other countries.
