Rochester Raging Rhinos defender Bill Sedgewick will run the 20th annual Los Angeles Marathon on Sunday, March 6th in support of his Rhinos’ teammate Shaun Tsakiris, who is recovering from testicular cancer.
Sedgewick has become known in Rochester for his charitable work with the Golisano Children’s Hospital at Strong. Sedgewick will now use the LA Marathon as a tribute to his teammate.
“I wanted to do something special for Shaun,” Sedgewick said. “This past year, I have had one current and one former teammate diagnosed with testicular cancer. I want to raise awareness and participating in an event like this is the least I can do as a human being to show my support.”
Sedgewick is currently asking for pledges for the marathon. Donations can be made either as a flat amount or per mile (26.2 miles for the marathon). Donations will be accepted at the Raging Rhinos office or at the Strides for Shaun table at the Rochester Americans hockey games each Friday night during February.
Tsakiris, the 5-7, 155-pound native of San Francisco, Calif., was diagnosed with the disease on October 19th. Tsakiris underwent surgery on October 25th to remove the cancerous testicle and cells that had spread to his stomach. After undergoing chemotherapy, the cancer went into remission and Shaun continues to get stronger each day.
The Los Angeles Marathon, held in March each year, has grown to become the largest participatory event in the United States and the world’s fourth largest marathon. To date, more than 350,000 runners have participated in the 26.2-mile race.
