What happens if you shoot a goal kick into your own goal? Isn't it a corner & not an own goal ? Does anyone know ?
Enckelman reacted well
As a goalkeeper, I felt very sorry for Peter Enckelman when I saw the goal he let in from a throw-in against Aston Villa on Monday night. Other people may have found it funny, but I can tell you I did not laugh. I never laugh when a goalkeeper goes through a hard time like that.
It's always very difficult for a goalkeeper because if you make a mistake, 99 per cent of the time it results in a goal. For me, mistakes are part of the game. They are always going to be made. The most important thing is to make sure they don't happen often, otherwise you will get an unwanted reputation.
To be honest, I don't consider what happened with Enckelman to be a clear goalkeeping error. I mean, it's not as if the ball slipped through his hands. What happened in this instance was nothing more than an accident, brought about by the rule change which forbids goalkeepers to control a throw-in with their hands.
I loved his reaction when he was taunted by a fan. I thought he behaved very intelligently.
That makes things difficult for us at times, because it means we must be more complete players. We have to be able to play with our feet, as well as make saves on our line and catch crosses.
When you make a mistake you can't turn the clock back. You just have to get on with your game as best as you can. It must have been so difficult for Enckelman because this was a derby, one of his team's most important games of the season, and there was a lot of media attention
But I loved his reaction when he was taunted by a Birmingham fan. I thought he behaved very intelligently.
I think 50 per cent of goalkeepers would have reacted to that, but Enckelman stayed remarkably calm and I admire him for that.
I can understand supporters feeling the way that fan did because the Birmingham people had waited a long time to get back in the Premiership and it was a special moment for them to see their team beating Aston Villa.
People always talk about the mistakes goalkeepers make, but outfield players can get away with them because they have people behind who can protect them and make things right. We goalkeepers have nobody behind us.
You have to be mentally strong as a keeper, and I believe we all are. I also still believe Enckelman is a good goalkeeper. He played very well against us in the first game of the season and he will get over this difficult period.
I'm also sure that he won't be the last goalkeeper this sort of thing happens to. It could happen to me or anybody, which is why you won't find me making light of it.
All of us at Liverpool are hoping for a good result against West Bromwich Albion tomorrow so we can put our defeat in Valencia firmly behind us. Of course, we were disappointed with our performance but I was also disappointed with some refereeing decisions.
He was the reason I said afterwards that we played like girls. This certainly shouldn't be interpreted as criticism of my team-mates.
The point I was trying to make was that in the first 15 or 20 minutes the referee made some decisions which meant we had to play softly and not challenge for possession in the way we would in the Premiership.
We like to play hard in every game, but if the referee doesn't allow it then we have to go by what he says. I think when Valencia come to Anfield it will be a different game.
