We shouldn't even be talking about this in the first place... :kader:

I though "actual problems" like social security, immigration laws, oil were more important to the goverment. The Bush Brothers.(N) <---this doesn't even look like finger :D!!!
Hehe i dont see anything better being discussed anyway. Yeah long posts will be coming soon (especially with lots of Quranic verses ;) ).

Typical!!!

I think there's a HUGE hypocracy in the US that it's not even funny... people are dying everyday and falling like flies everywhere around the country and the world because they're poor or there's nothing to gain from helping them for the politicians and media and we have to deal with this case and look at this poor woman every f***ing day on our TV....

And then you had the government scrambling to help her just because they wanted to make Bush's Brother to look good in his state and to block the stem cell research... where have they been for 15 years while this woman was ailing?...and now they're letting her die (regardless of the actual details) in front of her family and everybody is crying over her like she means f**k to all...

I just want her out of my TV just like i wanted that c**t Scott Peterson and Michael Carlos*son to rot in hell because I DON'T CARE to be honest...these ppl should be hanged just for wasting our time.....

now the mother will write a book and the husband will get paid to go on interviews and they'll make a lot of money out of this poor LAdy's suffering... ROT IN HELL :kader:

I totally agree with Run DMB on this issue - Euthanasia is murder, to legalise it would be to legalise a form of murder which is not only incorrect in genuine cases but is bound to be manipulated to foulplay and would almost certainly result in severe miscarriages of justice.

and isn't the death penalty a murder too?

to all the conservative and catholic freaks out there: do you want to let God do his job? so remove the tube and let Him do the job He should have done 15 or so years ago...

Good point bmpv666, if euthanasia is murder then the death penalty is too, not that i like the idea of pulling the tube out the way they did it.There are more humane ways to end her suffering.

VERY simple issues at stake here guys and euthenasia has nothing to do with it.

1) You have the right to refuse medical treatment see Cruzan v. Harmon.

2) If one is in a permenantly vegitative state there must be evidence that the person had made their wishes clear. Without that evidence a person in a vegitative state cannot refuse the treatment.

3) A court has ruled that Terry made her wishes clear before being in this state. Unless you call the numerous judges' competance and fairness into question, it's obvious that she should not be kept alive per her wishes.

4) There's no constitutional issues here because she isn't being deprived of life without due process of the law because there has been TONS of due process!

Exactly.

Euthanasia is not murder. It's a solution for unbearable pain. Euthanasia should be regulated by powerful laws. Not just everyone should be able to perform it, not just everyone should be able to apply for it. I do not want to see euthanasia as an "easy way out". Only the hopeless cases should be considered.

If it's not going to be allowed, who's should pay for the immense costs of those needing continueous treatment? The wealthy favouring, brilliant US health system?

Some facts from CNN.com

In what condition is Terri Schiavo?

Doctors that Michael Schiavo hired have said she is in a persistent vegetative state. That does not mean she is brain dead. People in a persistent vegetative state cannot think, speak or respond to commands and are not aware of their surroundings. They may have noncognitive functions and breathing and circulation may remain relatively intact. Terry Schiavo breathes on her own and blinks.

Doctors that Terri's parents, Mary and Robert Schindler, hired have said she is not in a vegetative state and has the capacity to improve with therapy. She has not received physical therapy for more than a decade. Her parents contend that when she received therapeutic care, she uttered a few one-syllable words. Until March 18, Terri received nourishment and hydration through a tube that placed the nutrients directly in her stomach.

What is Terri's mental capacity?

David Gibbs, an attorney for the Schindlers, said Terri has the mental capacity of a 6-month-old. George Felos, Michael Schiavo's attorney, has said she lacks all mental capacity and spinal fluid occupies the space where her cerebral cortex was.

What is the settlement to which her parents and husband refer?

In 1992, a Florida jury awarded Michael Schiavo $300,000 for loss of consortium as part of the medical malpractice suit he filed. The jurors also awarded $700,000 to Terri Schiavo.

Where is Terri's money, how much remains and who controls it?

The $700,000 for Terri Schiavo went into a trust over which her husband has sole control. Felos said his client used the money for Terri's medical care and his legal expenses, and that the money ran out about three years ago.

Why does her husband get to decide Terri Schiavo's fate instead of her parents?

Florida law specifies that the spouse of an incapacitated adult is that person's guardian. In 1993, the Schindlers petitioned the court to remove their son-in-law as Terri's guardian. They lost.

Why have the Schindlers said Michael Schiavo should not be their daughter's guardian?

They believe that there is a conflict of interest because Michael Schiavo lives with his girlfriend and has two children with her. They have contended that he cannot uphold the best interest of his wife while living in what they describe as an adulterous relationship. Michael Schiavo has said he is removing his wife's feeding tube as part of keeping his promise to her that he would not allow artificial means to preserve her life. He has stated that his new family does not affect his feelings for his wife because he can love more than one person.

My god, what a sadness. Doctors contradicting each other, law suit after law suit. Those parents are pathetic though. An "adulterous relationship"? Giv eme a break, the poor isn't allowed to move on while still caring for his wife?

This is just one big media circus.
Even if she recovered, it wouldn`t make a difference. She would still be too messed up to do anything. I have never heard of anyone making a full (or even close to full) recovery from being brain dead.

*Ding!*

I dont know where to draw the line in cases like this. There should be express consent in the case of someone who said in the past they didnt want to live like that, but at the same time, its not like the husband has been some stiff. But one thing most sane people can agree about is the media circus is simply amazing. It feeds all these braindead radicals that are willing to bomb clinics and kill judges becuase their ministers condemn their practices, or those on the other side that see this as some great crusade for humanity. Its neither. Its something blown way out of proportion for the purposes of Fox News Chum and government distraction. I havent yet seen the husband in the media, but her family have paraded every priest and PAC scumbag they can find in front of a camera to talk about how this is an abomination and murder, etc. Just more evidence this country is headed in a corkscrew toward theocracy. Ah well, may as well enjoy the ride.

by the way, Shifty*eritz, are you prelaw? Or are you studying for a legal field? Cause that was a pretty snappy case reference. Unless of course, youve just done your homework :p

If I score well on my LSATs in October I'll probably start law school in the fall of 2006. I'm in a constitutional law course right now and we talked about it on tuesday, but we read Cruzan earlier in the semester.

I read if they dont cremate the body they can examine the brain in the autopsy and find out whether she was really in a persistent vegitative state or not!

but i dont get why the husband wont let em do that .. he goes o terri wouldnt have like to live with bugs! i mean come on what is that !

btw the next issue the family is fighting over is if her body is should be cremated (husband) or christian burial (parents.)

can u people seriously blv this? i mean this is just ridiculous!

Her husband has already requested for an autopsy to be done once she "dies" so i guess you can rule out foul play there. I sure hope the extent of her brain damage shuts everyone up once & for all. But in the unlikely scenario that it turns out that her brain was still working more than the specialists had earlier determined, it would sure stir up a firestorm

As sick as it sounds, im almost glad shes gone now, hopefully resting in peace, and this whole mess is over. As southpark illustrated last night, this poor person just becomes a tool for pre-fab politicized movements based on what is "right", and those who claim some higher level of morality are just as sick as the rest. It kinda reminds me of last semester when i was doing a pretty big paper on the attitudes in defense of Sacco and Vanzetti: One woman gave an account of her protest in New York, between 1926 and 27, i believe, and she cried out "Save Sacco and Vanzetti from the electric chair!" when some protest leader(think he was also an advocate for an anarchist group) told her "What are you talking about? Theyre worth nothing to us alive" :nape:

RIP you poor woman

...I'm going to end this discussion right now, I don't see a way you can argue with this... to the retarded conservative bunch of the forum that claim that life should take its own time and she should only die when it's her time... guess what? she would have been buried 15 years ago or probably more if it wasn't for the machine that keeps her body running. Now anyone with half a brain cell can't consider that to be alive and if doctors considered that to be alive hospitals would be way way way more packed. Hell, maybe they should start plugging in 90 year olds that die of age to the machine and keep them connected till their skin starts melting?

R.I.P. I'm sure she's found peace. I hope she's gone to whatever she believed in.

PS That family is mad. Now the fight has started whether to bury her or cremate (sp?) her... I cannot believe it. Can noone stand up in this family and say: "let's put it behind us, let her rest in peace, and mourn..."

Help?

RIP

One thing that really gets me about this case is how all those people from hospitals go on the media and say that that woman should have lived, and they speak like they really care about her. The poor guy has been paying thousands of dollars every month to the hospital, obviously they would not want to lose that kind of income. Nobody even cares about her, except her family. In a month everyone will just forget about the whole thing, the media got their story, while the hospital lost their income.
