Definitely Maybe > Whatever People Say I Am, That's What I'm Not

The best Oasis song will always be > The best Arctic Monkeys song

With that out the way, I think they're quite good.

How can you compare Oasis to Arctic Monkey's anyway? It's two totally different bands with totally different styles.

Hell if that's the case

ZZ Top > Mariah Carey

Because Arctic Monkey's debut stole the "Fastest Selling Rock Debut" crown from Oasis. Comparisons are bound to be made. I know for a fact they'll never be as famous as Oasis but that'll probably be through Alex Turner's own choice.

I thought Hear Say held the record for fastest selling record (though it might have been Oasis before that).

Fastest selling single.
Due to internet downloads, the Arctics have the record for fastest selling album.

In my opinion, sales aside, theyre nothing like Oasis.

I didnt think they were too bad when i first heard them, but all the criticisms in this thread are quite true. In my opinion, they sound like another Kaiser Chiefs or Maximo Park, both of whom I think are better....Well, Maximo Park, surely

I just played their first advance release on radio a couple of weeks ago. Their first intrest probing single came from the record company like a month ago, in the states

The NME just like to compare every debut with Definitely Maybe, that's all. They did it with Doves. Proclaiming Lost Souls to be ...

Balls, naturally. Seeing as they have entirely different musical aspirations and direction.

Quite funny as in 100 best MTV2 songs of 2005, they figured in number 1, in front of Bloc Party, Arcade Fire and Maximo Park...well, that isn't to agree is it?

Tell you one music publication that ive lost entire respect for: Blender.

I subscribed in the summer becuase they seemed funnier, more diverse and better than rolling stone. Then the end of the year edition came out and they ranked Kidz Bop's cover of 'Since you been gone' as the 100th best song of 2005 (just to be clear, Kids Bop is a bunch of whiny brats singing the most popular, non offensive popsongs for marketing to other whiny brats). Now, im no expert, but give me a week in a studio, and im willing to bet I can find 1000 songs or more from last year that were better than a bunch of fu*king kids covering Kelly Clarkson, whose original version they rated as the best song of the year. So if they have to stick two versions of the same song in one 100 song list, ideas must be pretty short over there

Then I began to notice how lame some of their material was, how blatant product placement was (caption last issue: "Fall out Boy and some friends rocking out with some sparks energy drinks" :|) and how, in general, the magazine panders to whatever celebrity they score and interview with to make even the hopelessly sh*t and lame seem cool.

Next time, im getting Spin and thats the end of it

Listened to their set on Lamacq live, the other day. Seems the lead singer bloke is sounding a tad arrogant. And finishes every song with a banjo riff.

In short, George Formby > Arctic Monkeys.

They've won breakthrough artist at the Brit awards...with previous winners including Keane, SClub7, Belle & Sebastian, the Stereophonics, Blue and Busted. Take that for what its worth

Aye, Belle and Sebastian winning a Brit. What a crazy year 1999 was. It's death, basically. Which is good, for people like me.

were S Club 1999?

Actually, i think Bring it All Back was the summer of 99... really shouldnt know that.

S Club 7 was apparrently 2000 for best new artist, Tom..so it was a slow year (H)

according to wiki, 1999 went like so...

* Best soundtrack - Titanic
* British album – Manic Street Preachers – This Is My Truth Tell Me Yours
* British breakthrough act – Belle & Sebastian
* British dance act – Fatboy Slim
* British female solo artist – Des'ree
* British group - Manic Street Preachers
* British male solo artist - Robbie Williams
* British single – Robbie Williams – "Angels"
* British video – Robbie Williams – "Millennium"
* International breakthrough act – Natalie Imbruglia
* International female - Natalie Imbruglia
* International group – The Corrs
* International male – Beck
* Outstanding contribution – Eurythmics
so take that as you may. The Corrs, Des'ree, Natalie Imbruglia, Robbie Williams, TITANIC (H)

And shindig, while Belle and Sebastian may not have made the bigtime like expected, they are the second coming of christ to some American college students. Personally, I think theyre pretty ok

Previous winners were the Stereophonics and Supa-grass. No complaints there. But lately the misses have been a bit greater than the hits
