Tony Kornheiser on Pardon The Interupption saying 'it's soccer, soccer stinks' regarding the world cup draw sums it all up. I'd like him to go to every other country in the world and discover that nobody cares about any american sport at all. If I saw that bald bastard I'd stick a tool right in his belly!!

shut up idiot. Like bj said you guys are equally close minded about American sports. We follow Football, Basketball and Baseball actively in this country while the European nations follow just one sport like a religion.

You call Americans close minded and then say Football lacks skill. I've played football and its far thougher to play than soccer. Anyone can play soccer decently after a certain point. Its very tough to be great at it but its a lot harder to even be average at Football.

We realize that Americans don't follow soccer but it doesn't mean they need to stop following the other major sports. I follow soccer every single day but I stay tuned about the NFL just as much (about my local team anyway).

And the padding the NFL players wear doesn't make the sport any less physical. Despite all the padding, injuries are common.. almost too common.

If you don't know enough about something, don't criticize it.

I disagree. What do you mean by decently? Your definition probably far from what I call decent at football. And my at my school, american football team sucks a lot, they win like 2 games a year. But, a lot of the team is just random people deciding to play, and after the year is done, some of them are named best in the state linebackers or whatever, and best linemens, why? Because they weigh 300 pounds and stand there and block the other people because it takes them longer to get around them.

Being good at football takes work, and lots of it. I think your referring to decent as playing for JV, where they let anyone play.

anyone that says that being in the NFL takes no skill is an ignorant fool.

So what if they didnt show the draw on tv, whats the big deal, is just a friggin draw. Such a pointless ceremony that should take 20 minutes, ended up being 2 hrs.. agh.

*Sigh*

I suppose you guys will never get it. It takes a lot more than being big and "just running into someone" to be good at football. Ever heard of a thing called a playbook? It generally consists of somewhere around 100 different plays, that all the players on a team must memorize and be able to execute in all sorts of situations. That's called mental skill.

You guys just seem to be as dense as bricks. Please, stop posting about things you know little to nothing about.

it's sad, it's really sad.

I don't understand why football...soccer hasn't taken off in the States. after 94 and a successful 2002, along with a great women's teams with loads of heroines and a pretty good mens' team, sawker still isn't getting the publicity that it should have.

Sawker is the most popular after school sport in the States, many kids have played it while they're growing up.

Methinks the problem is the kids aren't getting interested at sawker because they're not seeing how magical it is at the top level. They don't know who Ronaldinho, Rivaldo, Messi, Denilson, Cristiano Ronaldo is. All they know is Beckham. Oh, and Freddy Adu. To quote my US friends "He kicks a** and he's going to win the world cup for us."

All of us soccer fans remember as young kids that when we saw a slick dribbling move everyone simply admired their skill and hoped to be one of them one day. That sadly wouldn't happen in the States.

Kids in the US should be flipping channels catching glimpses of world football. A little Bundesliga, a little Brazilian League, Premier League, La Liga etc, that's how the interest grows. Instead US kids have CSPAN and Fox, and crap shows like Dawson's Creek and Gilmore Girls. They like their news localized, they like their sports localized. They'll go on days and days about the college team rivalry in their home state and the they'll talk about the NBA, the NFL or the baseball league (World Series, mind you) but nothing international. Seldom have I heard US kids talk about the Olympics or the World Cup. Back at home here my friends and I talk about that crazy goal by Bergkamp against Argentina, and we'll know which goals we're talking about, but a US friend would ask "who's Bergkamp?"

A year ago I coached a 12-year old amateur football team in NC. Like most kids in their states, they knew very little about the beautiful game but they were able to tell me about Duke-UNC rivalry, naming quite a lot of players. They were clueless on the pitch and did not get the idea why a cross is dangerous, what role does a full-back play etc. I had a wonderful time coaching them and gave them all a present at the end of the season. I burned them copies of "Best 100 Goals in Football History" video clip I got from a torrent.

I even went as far to bring my laptop in a training session during the middle of the season. They all huddled around the tiny 14 inch screen and with their mouths opened. It was hard to start training afterwards. "Who's that? Who's that?"
Roberto Carlos my friend..

They were all delighted at the end of the season to have received that video clip as a gift. Many of their parents emailed me to thank me for doing it and told me they enjoyed watching the video clip as a family. it's been played over and over. So I'd like to think i've did my part to preach football. The parents were delighted that they had someone who understood football and have watched and played football as a coach, instead of a parent who knew nothing about the offside rule.

BTW, as a completely new team with no experience whatsover, we had 3 wins, 3 draws and 2 losses. Not bad eh?

In conclusion, the US kids need their world football on TV.

p.s. First day in training I wore my United shirt and preached to them about Manchester United for a long time, perhaps a little too long. I made sure they knew who their coach supported.

p.p.s. I got a little angry when they didn't know who Cantona was when they were watching the video. I had to preach to them for a long time and I told them he was "the coolest football player in his time".

Man, you're a moron. Have you ever seen a football game? Or have you ever tried to throw a pigskin 50 yards downfield to hit someone running essentially the 100-yard dash in stride, all while 7 men are coming at you to try to rip your head off? Neither have I, but I bet it takes some skill. Not to mention the things running backs and linebackers do.

Man, I love soccer or football or whatever you want to call it, but that doesn't mean that other sports are no good or take no skill. Damn, some of you sure like to bitch about Americans who think (American) football is the only sport, or baseball, or basketball, or anyone who has as much love for their sport as you do for yours. Then you turn right around and act like football is the only game that matters. Hypocrisy at its finest. Most anyone that truly knows me knows how passionate I am about football, yet even I still recognize and respect other sports. You should try it.

I didn't actually bitch about anyone else who happens to love their sport did I?So read the post before you go into a frenzy.
My post clearly states..."Personally football is the only sport that interests me".Therefore i am hardly likely to be full of praise for any other sport am i?
At no time did i say NFL didn't require skill either.I said "Minimal skill".....which is true.As stated before, you have a quarterback who, basically just needs to be able to throw a straight ball ....woowee......then the catcher who needs to be able to catch the egg shaped thing while running as fast as he can.As i said ,minimal skill. The rest of the squad just need to be big and heavy so as to flatten anyone who needs to be flattened.Man some of these guys are OBESE.I dont mean big ,i mean big time FAT.What sorta sportsman is that?Sure you have the gameplans to memorise too, which i must admit takes some doing considering most of those guys probably cant even spell.Seriously that game takes nerve to play. Those guys might have some bottle and tons of heart, but thats not skill.
There are plenty of people in Europe who love football and other sports besides. That is not exclusive to the USA.The whole world aint having a go at your "sports"....It's me giving my opinion and whether you like it or not thats something we are all entitled to do in the free world, without some spunkbrain calling you an idiot because your opinions and his are different. You carry on loving your sports.Really thats great,i'm happy for ya.But leave me to choose what i like OK?
Also i didn't single out American sports either.I did include cricket and rugby too but you bypassed that. You guys are too paranoid and too defensive. You need to calm down about these things and talk about it without having to revert to namecalling. You end up coming over sounding a little immature.....no offence.......... :)

Why can't people just have a nice talk here?! Actually, football is like that, people arguing is quite normal and it's ok. But I didn't insult people. Btw, I already told you I was being a bitch, coz everyone thinks that, and says "Americans can't win, so they don't care about it". But if you still want to act like an ass, go ahead. :ewan:

I wouldn't go that far as say they are naive and ignorant. I'm just sorry for them that they are deprived from world football, the game that binds the world together.

There are more countries in FIFA than there is in the UN!
I mean, how can you not get the world cup fever? 32 nations travel to a new nation every four years to battle it out for the sake of being the champion of the world. That's magical stuff!

This is why world football is celebrated everywhere. Each team brings their own attraction to the game, the south americans are great at their dribbling, Germany is efficient and they are tournament experts, Australia, T&T and Angola are new nations ready to battle it out with the bigger teams, all this is great! There's also the numerous rivalries, I can go on and on and on.

The world is welcoming the States in open arms to world football, we taunt and give US fans stick every once in a while but to me it's all fair game, considering that the US has f*cked the world in various ways and is ever present in world issues, sticking their nose in others countries' problems that is honestly, not their business.

It's time for the US to embrace world football. It's something that you can talk about with anyone, anywhere in the world! do you want to tell your kids, "I saw J.J. Reddick beat the buzzer to win the game against UNC", a regionalized college rivalry, or do you want to tell your kids about seeing Maradona score that wondergoal against England, how he cheated with the hand of God, Baggio's penalty miss that bought tears to an entire nation, Solksjaer winning the European cup in the last minute, etc?

Its short and simple,i am not crticising any US sports but i personally think that Basketball, American Football and Baseball are boring and can't resist them.I will watch ten same episodes of Seinfield in a row but i can't really watch this sports.

Exactly, I aways get excited when the WC is coming, I'm going to Germany with my wife and kids and I already got all planed for over 10 months.

And it's weird how mostly americans here support european teams, I mean, it is not wrong, it's actually cool but it must suck for them, who like football in the US, that they don't have decent teams in the US to support there. I always supported Feyenoord, since I was 3...4... it's like forever. And I didn't pick up, it's more like passion, like town rivalry and stuff... Some just pick up a team to support, a team they like, and others just support coz they have some of Italian blood, or spanish... but it most be hard to fallow their teams from USA nowadays. Coz mostly just start fallowing when they get older. Hope you can understand what I mean.
