Yellow Card
Steven Gerard has done nothing over the last couple of games. He has just not looked inspired at all. Luis Garcia is the key that makes the offense go. Either Gerard is not nearly as good as advertised or Benitez' system is a miserable failure...1-0 to CRYSTAL PALACE! These fools don' t belong in the Champions League next season. I just hope that this game went badly due to players looking ahead to Stamford Bridge or else Chelsea (with Robben back) with slaughter these idiots. I have to say it again...CRYSTAL PALACE !

Gerard is playing more of a defensive role than an offensive role. The problem is that Gerard should be attacking more. This reminds me of what happened with Michael Ballack for Bayern against Chelsea where he was expected to play more of an offensive role. People kept saying he is a defensive midfielder and should not play in the offensive position. The opposite is true of Gerard who should be playing offensively rather than defensively....I mean the play on Andy Johnson was good and all but, without Garcia against Chelsea really Gerard will have even more pressure to lead the offense. And there may even be no Baros.

It is time to concede third place to Everton and focus on the CL...they deserve to make it through. :rockman: Gifted opportunities are being squandered..this is the EPL...you can' t miss these chances so often and then expect to finish in the top 4. :kader: :kader:

Lets face it, we havent been good enough to finish 4th this year. Losing to teams like Soton, Birmingham twice, Boro and dropping points where we should have won. I can imagine there will be a big clear out at seasons end and i can see a real possibility of Pablo Aimar coming to Liverpool, (Its true Tom. :) )

With a possibilty of no CL on the cards next season, can we really expect Gerrard to stay after his out burst last season saying that he wants Liverpool to be challenging for the league and other trophies every season? But to be honest Gerrard of late has been a shadow of the player we know he is capable of and to me, i think in his heart he has already left the club. We'll have to wait and see but i think he is leaving. Yes, winning the CL might have a slim chance of keeping him here, but i just dont think Gerrard is willing to put up with finishing 4th or 5th in the league every season.

Like he says, he's not going to be playing football forever and he wants to win trophies before he retires. Yes he stated he would love to win them as captain at Liverpool, but seriously, are we within touching distance of the league? I'm not so sure. Not only that, along with Liverpool, Arsenal and Man Utd have been put on the backfoot with the spending power of Chelsea. They really can blow everyone else off the market when it comes to buying talent. No other club would be able to outbid them and i think its not fair for the game. IMO.

Liverpool need to strengthen a few areas of their squad and i think maybe not next season, but the season after we will be challenging for the title ahead of Man Utd. Why? Because during this time i predict Alex Ferguson will leave Man Utd and i dont think they will be the force they were in the 90's.

Next season i can still see Liverpool still in a re-building phase post-Houllier in the sense of Benitez getting rid of the players most fans around the world have been wanting to see leave Anfield for a long time. I'm talking about Cheyrou, Smicer, Biscan (although he has been a revelation for the club this season), Diao, Diouf and perhaps the likes of Kewell, Baros and Hamann leaving is a possibility as well.

I trust Benitez will bring in some real quality at seasons end, but as for who he will bring in is anyones guess, but IMO a left winger to replace Kewell, another striker to replace Baros (Owen :jambo: ), a centre-half to replace Pellegrino, 3 centre mids if the trio of Gerrard, Hamann and Biscan all leave, (Aimar, Rosicky and others that are rumoured?)

So all in all, Benitez has a down right tough job on his hands, but i strongly believe he is the right man for the job. Liverpool have played some real exciting football this season, and i believe we will continue to flourish under the gaffer.

I don't know about you Kopites but Gerrard's performance was the only good positive to take away from Palace. According to Alan Hanson on match of the day he was "awesome".

again the team let rafa down!!

Missed Alonso again. when he doesnt play you see the big difference.

If gerrard wants to go then so be it. even if we win the CL if his mind is made up he will not stay.

£35M is a lot of cash and you can trust Rafa will not waist that kind of money.

Cisse came on late again so i really mot sure how much he can play. If Baros is out on wednesday what we gonna do? Cisse has to start doesnt he.

Harry's back!

Harry Kewell has been named in the Liverpool squad for the Champions League semi-final first leg against Chelsea, while Rafael Benitez is hopeful that Milan Baros, Luis Garcia and Xabi Alonso will all be fit to play.
Baros limped out of the action at Selhurst Park on Saturday with a knee injury, while the Garcia and Alonso both sat out the defeat against Crystal Palace.

Benitez confirmed today that he expects all three to be at his disposal for the trip to Stamford Bridge and also revealed that Harry Kewell will return to the squad for the first time since the Carling Cup Final in February.

"Baros, Garcia and Alonso will be fit I hope. They will all travel, as will Kewell who is also in the squad," said the Reds boss.

"Harry is not one hundred per cent. He couldn't play a full 90 minutes, or maybe even 45, but he could play half an hour for sure. He's been working hard for the past month, is a good player and wants to play. This is a boost for us."

Youngster John Welsh and Darren Potter are not in the squad that will fly down to London this afternoon. Both are involved in the reserve game at Manchester City tonight.

The Reds will train at Stamford Bridge later this evening.

WOOOOOOOOHOOOOOOOOOO! that is great news. I badly hope kewell coming back will solve our goal scoring problem atm. I dont know how but liverpools current strike force includes the likes or morientes baros and cisse but we just havnt been converting the last few games. A strike force like that you would expect liverpool to score at least 2 goals a match. And we cant say anything about assistance either we got gerrard and alonso with riise doing spectacular to. Hopefully kewell can add the cutting edfe we needed. I hope pool score in the match agaisnt chelsea, hoping itll be a draw or a win for us. If that happens, finals here we come. Good luck fellas

I don't think Kewell will be at Anfield next season can't see him there, my bet is that he will end up in Tottenham...

Kendall: Give Euro place to Everton - not Liverpool

Former Everton manager Howard Kendall is calling on the FA to give the last Champions League place to the fourth-place winner in the Premiership.

Kendall was in charge at Goodison when the Blues missed out on a place in the European Cup thanks to the ban on English sides.

That followed the tragedy at the final between Liverpool and Juventus, when 39 fans died.

The Reds could block Everton's route again if they win the tournament.

Only four clubs are allowed in from any one country and UEFA have told the FA to decide whether Liverpool should go in as holders - or Everton, if they finish fourth.

Kendall said: "Fans will refer back to the situation at Heysel. We won the league, we won the Cup Winners' Cup and we were looking forward to the European Cup and all of a sudden English clubs were banned for five years.

"Evertonians will be looking back and thinking 'Oh no, not Liverpool again, denying us the opportunity'.

"We believed we were the best and we were denied the opportunity to prove it. If Everton finish fourth, we deserve to be in there.

"Everyone was tipping us for relegation after the sale of Wayne Rooney. But they've done a magnificent job and deserve to go into the Champions League."

I doubt you guys will be in the CL next year, i'm certain you'll be in the Uefa cup next year, and i'm sure you guys will win it... :ewan:

I thought the day will never come for everton lol, i can't believe they are in 4th position atm, it's because of Timmy Cahill !!! (H)

The CL winners left out.....over my rotting corpse. Either way the FA are a bunch of dicks so i'm sure they'll give the 4th place to us if we win the CL :D.

FA are gonna choose 4th ahead of CL champs. Well, I guess we're in Uefa Cup next season, fan fvcking tastic. What players are gonna wanna join us now? Y should a player of Gerrard's calibre be playing in the Uefa cup?

Not interested in seeing him back. Yeah he'll probably be good for a midtable club but i'm hoping we get out of that zone soon. Congrats for the draw 'pool (Y) (H)

Gerrard in hospital drama
Apr 28 2005
By Chris Bascombe, Liverpool Echo

LIVERPOOL skipper Steven Gerrard was at the centre of a hospital drama hours before the Champions League semi-final at Chelsea.

The Huyton-born midfielder had surgery to remove a painful mouth abscess after he suffered a sleepless night.

Dental surgeons treated him in time for him to play a key role in last night's match.

It is understood Gerrard, 24, had been suffering increasing pain for the past few days.

He was awake in agony at 2am yesterday, and after discussions it was decided to take him first thing in the morning to a nearby dental hospital in London.

The procedure to lance the abscess is understood to have been carried out successfully after Gerrard was given a local anaesthetic.

He returned to join up with his team mates before leading them out and playing in the Reds impressive 0-0 draw at Stamford Bridge.

Geoff Brown, dental adviser for Merseyside primary care trusts, said: "It would have been very painful.

"The purpose of the surgery will be to ease the pain but he would have felt very groggy after the anaesthetic.

"The antibiotics would also have taken their toll."

Richard Pedder of the Liverpool Supporters Club, said it was typical of Gerrard to play through the pain barrier. He said: "It shows what a team player he is."

Sean Sweeney from Bootle was also watching the game at Stamford Bridge. He said: "Gerrard is a hero through and through.

"He is not the sort of player that would let a toothache get in the way of a big game."

Great draw. Looks like we're in the drivers seat. What a crap booking by the ref to alonso though hey. That was clearly not a yellow card as alonso didnt intentionally challenge him. Can we do it with out him. I say yes but we'll have to find out. we have a major advantage because if anfield supporters can tear down clubs like Juve then Chelsea should be a breeze.Great to see kewell back. Although gave the ball away a few times im just so HAPPY!

hey, well at least Alonso will be back for the final ;)

As for Cheyrou, he was never given a decent run in the team. I feel for him. Has some good skill, bit light weight though.
