In Argentina we have a lot of English named teams, even though only a few are directly linked to English teams (like Arsenal de Sarandí). We also have Banfield, Boca Juniors (the Junior part), River Plate, Racing Club, Alumni (which does not exist anymore), Newell's Old Boys, etc... I don't know if this I am posting is actually related to what you are looking for in the thread.

For example Boca Juniors got their team colors from a Swedish ship that sailed into the port of Buenos Aires. The owners had decided that they would choose the colors for the team depending on which ship arrived at the harbor first, and it happened to be a Swedish one.

River Plate, for example, got their name due to the fact that some workers on the port had received some metal plates from England that had to be layed on the port. On the plates it read, "River Plate".

Some teams from Argentina do have funny names like "Sacachispas" which means spark-producer or "Defensa y Justicia" which means defense and justice.

But Banfield is called like that because it's located in Banfield, just like Quilmes.:p

What about "Racing Club" when you think of it it's a full english name too. Also there're many clubs in Argentina called "Racing", Racing Club being the most important one, then Racing de Cordoba, which is actually 4th most important club of Cordoba actually on the third division, Racing de Olavarria is another there are others. Then again there're many Huracan's or Independiente's, not to mention all the "Defensores de <some place here>" or "San Martín de <some place here>". In the 4th division there's a "Boca Unidos", which would mean "Boca United".:funny:

Alumni, the club, still exists but doesn't dedicate to football anymore at least on a professional level, on the 4th division there's a "Alumni de Villa María", although it's not the real Alumni from the 1900's.

Regarding english names, what about the legendary "All Boys"?

Probably the most corny name is from the 2nd division CAI CR, which is Comisión de Actividades Infantiles de Comodoro Rivadavia. Funny as it is the name is because the club was founded as an organizer for football tournaments for children, eventually they got proper team and started to climb until they got to the 2nd division some years ago. And yes Sacachispas Fútbol Club, like andy mentioned before.

Uruguay probably gets the trophy with some of the names of their clubs being english based.
-Montevideo Wanderers FC
-Albion FC
-Bristol FC(No idea if it still exists)
-Liverpool
-River Plate
-El Tanque Sisley(The Sisley Tank) - Not english based but plain funny.:p

And others...

Here in Brazil whe have our quota of weird names too...the first one that pop to the mind are Volta Redonda (= 'round lap', at least that is the actual name of a town) and the lively CRAC from Goiás. Not to mention if you pick any traditional team from SP/Rio then you can be sure there are at least three clubs with the same name around the country, which leads to amusing situations in Brazilian Cup... Foreign names exist, but are not that prevalent nowadays. Most famous case is perhaps SC Corinthians Paulista (name taken from the early 1900's English club).

PS1: Now that would be a clássico, Botafogo vs Sacachispas :p

PS2: What intrigues me more about 'your' Arsenal... it seems to have such mystique, yet appearantly they've never won a thing.

What is real funny here in Mexico is that almost all teams have animal nicknames

America FC (Aguilas).-Eagles
Atlante FC (Potros).- horses
Atlas FC (Zorros).- Foxes
Queretaro FC (GAllos Blancos).- White roosters
CLub Guadalajara (Chivas).-Goats
Chiapas (JAugares).-JAguars
Club Pachuca (Tuzos).- dont konow how to say it in english but they are like giant rats haha
UNAM (Pumas).- Panthers
UAG (Tecos).- Owls
UANL (Tigres).- Tigers
Veracruz FC (Tiburones).- Sharks

11 out of 18, isnt that odd?

Did u know?

Mauro Camoranesi actual World Cup champion played for Curz Azul before he was bought by Verona, im not going to forget ever when he got a red card in a final match and started to cry like a baby he was like 19 or 20

Bebeto played in a very small club named Toros Neza beore he retired

There is a rumour that Totti played in Atlante in minor division when e was strarting his football career 8dont think is true though)

I would be such a rabid MLS fan if I had a team to root for here in Charlotte :( :( :(

unfortunately Charlotte has like zero soccer culture, if anywhere in NC they would probably relocate to the Triangle....most likely the ****hole Cary.

I belive he refers the mexican club

Atlas (Guadalajara).- A traditional club in Mexico although they only have 1 league championship like 50 years ago!!, its the club that provides more youngsters to 1st division in the last years, but they hardly stay there they go to a bigger club in 2 or 3 years at most , in fact a lot of "big" players of the Mexican NT were made in Atlas (Oswaldo Sanchez, Borgetti, Pavel Pardo,Rafael Marquez , Guardado, Rafael Garcia, Mario Mendez), they had a brilliant years in late 90s with Lavolpe as their Coach but never managed to win anything they lost a final vs Toluca in 98 i think, and had a great Copa Libertadores playing brillanty, i think they got to semis a decent place for a team with very little money. They had this golden generation and a great hope for mexico´s future but when all moved to bigger clubs never did a thing.

Aye, thanks (Y)

ha! I remember seeing Toros Neza play! didn't know they were such a small club though...

I miss watching Mexican soccer, there's this channel here that used to televise games from Mexico like 10 years ago. I always enjoyed watching, very entertaining football.

I'm actually excited about Toronto FC... at least we'll be able to watch some live footie in a few years.

Hmm they might bomb out like the 2 expansion sides last year or like the New Zealand Knights did last season in the A-League :p

Yeah, too bad they dissapeared into oblivion after they descended...I remember them as one of the more entertaining teams in the mid 90's. They had a very popular player Antonio 'El Turco' Mohamed. (btw his kid died during the Germany WC...he crashed his RV and his kid was the only one who died. Sad.)

Their logo:

yeah I remember that logo! :)

is there a good website out there with daily news, updates, etc about the Mexican league? My gf's parents have Univision and Telemundo on their satelite dish, I might have to head over there and watch some... (the Mexican TV presenter girls on those variety shows are always f*cking hot-as-hell too!)

Basically it's a neighbourhood club founded 49 years ago that somehow managed to climb to the first division, winning the promotion in the season 2002/2003 they have been there since then, in the first division they even managed to play the Sudamericana once, and cause upsets to the big clubs of Argentina.

Arsenal got affiliated to AFA in 1961 in their first match they played against a team called "Piraña(Piranha, which i believe no longer exists or never heard of it really)". In 1962 they played 2 matches against Club Atlético Arsenal, into what got called "The war of the Arsenals", it seems that there was a bet in game, the lose should remove "Arsenal" from their name and as you can guess Arsenal Fútbol Club was the winner of these matches. However i have no idea what was of CA Arsenal after.:o

I still haven't found a good english one either.

The best one there is is Medio Tiempo, no doubt, even though its in spanish (you could run it throught a translator?), they usually beat anyone when it comes to the latest MFL news.

Edit:
Atlas celebrates and wins to Mouth!!

Ahh...
Silly Google, is Boca, not Juniors Mouth. :fool:

Atlante USA in Union County of all places (H)

And http://www.thefootballwiki.com/index.php/Torpedo_Charlotte , heroes.

Carolina has plenty of teams. They're all USL, but MLS isn't going to put a team in the south, even if we have stadiums.

Cary's USL1 team (the "RailHawks", whatever that is), Charleston (USL1), Charlotte (USL2), Wilmington (USL2), Greensboro (PDL), and Raliegh (PDL).

Support those teams, they need the money.

Speaking of Atlas, they have an excellent team this year.
With the addition of the wonder-kid Rogallega from Colombia, and Romano as coach, they look very dangerous.
If the Argentine Emmanuel Villa stays, and with the next Mexican Maradona(Guardado) getting a starter role, I definitely see them in the final eight.

They're a team I could definitely support, actually most of my family does, just except for the few Rayados (like myself).
