3:2 for YB.
Dynamo made a draw with Ajax, playing with 10 men. Ref, Massimo Busacca, made many mistakes favoring Ajax. Blatter and Platini need to allow video technology for the refs or retire.
Surprised with the loss of Sparta, although I know only little about their opponent Zilina.

Good oportunity at the end for Braga, missed.

Sampdoria's chances just improved by several multiples ...

And now they have worsened by several multiples.

The German League is at the beginning of a renaissance. Sensational young generation coming through and the finances heavily favor German clubs in this tough time.

The philosophy of having debt limits is paying off now.

yeah, lots of great young talent ... and people are yet to see the likes of Marco Reus, Timo Gebhart, Christian Träsch, Mats Hummels, etc. on the bigger stages ...

and the benefits of the financial rules already in place, coupled with the emerging talent, there is little to be argued against the signs ...

back to square one, then? :) Samp are still in the contest ... Bremen are well in control of their destiny, but that late goal from Pazzo keeps the tie open ...

---

Sampdoria were very, very unlucky with some key moments ... Pazzini just straying offside on the correctly disallowed goal early in the match ... then, at 1-0 down, Pazzini again at the end of a good move that saw the ball agonizingly ping back off the upright and into the keeper's arms ... and then the telling deflection on what was otherwise a superb move for Bremen's third ...

it was very evident, to me at least, that the Italians were playing their first competitive game of the season, because they still looked to be in pre-season mode ... the Germans, on the other hand, have already had some competitive action in the DFB Pokal, and it showed in their pace and especially their rhythm ... it must have been obvious to Guberti and Poli, watching from the sidelines, because they injected some much-needed impetus and focus to Samp's play ... in fact, I'd have preferred to see Poli start ahead of Tissone, who was nothing short of terrible ... and Guberti ahead of Semioli too, with Mannini retained ...

anyway, Samp are not out of it yet ... they have a tough ask to come back, but would hopefully have learnt a lot from today's match, and will be up to the requisite match speed [of thought] to get the necessary result ...

---

have to give recognition to Aaron Hunt ... he slotted into Özil's free role impressively in the first half, and was causing problems for Doria all over the place ... I've kept an eye on him since he emerged, coz the "manager" in me is fascinated by the challenge of mentally conceiving an English club team with a core of young, talented Englishmen, who have the technique to play an attractive game ... Hunt and Lewis Holtby have always featured in those plans of mine ... good to see Aaron Hunt step up to the challenge of filling Mesut's void, just a day after his departure ...

Hunt and Holtby are German, but yeah I was extremely impressed by Bremen's creative midfield as well. To put in a performance like that without Marin for almost the entire game is pretty damn good.

yup ... and I was careful to mention club team when I said that ... talented homegrown Englishmen with proper technique for a passing, possession game, are difficult to come by ...

I think about language, culture, and upbringing when assessing this sort of thing too ...

Aaron Hunt's English on his mother's side ... so if he moved to a London club, he'd have a lot of family locally, and it would a bit of a homecoming ... but -- and I don't mean to be sexist -- because it was Hunt's mum who was English, I think he was brought up more German than English when it comes to football ...

compare that to Lewis Holtby, whose dad is a Brummie Evertonian, and through whom Holtby was imbibed with that sense of English football culture ... Holtby even admitted that he was always English supporter, wearing the national shirt as a supporter, and feeling weird when he wore the German shirt when got called up to the German youth setup ... Everton's a dream move for him, coz of his dad -- and how many Germans would really say that? playing for Villa would probably see him adopted by the local support as a local, due to his family there ... even if he moved to Liverpool, it'd mean more than to him than just a move abroad ... and I remember him mentioning Joe Cole in an interview, so that'd be an added reason to consider for him now ... basically, it'd be emotionally significant for him to play in England, because his English heritage is tangible for him ... and that's why I'd still consider him for English club teams when making those fantasy football management scenarios ...

Well, I'm thinking it more of who they'll play for internationally, and both of those kids will get capped for Germany before England even considers them. Actually, I think Hunt has already been capped.

As far as Holtby goes, I think you're right about everything except if he's really as big of an Everton fan as he says, there is NO WAY he would consider Liverpool.

The Von Trapps
England actually tried to persuade Aaron Hunt to choose England, but he insisted on not changing allegiance (having already played for Germany at youth level) ... and yes, he has since been capped for Germany ...

Holtby's also been approached by the English FA ... and though he's still eligible for England, he too has said he won't change his allegiance when going from youth to full international ...

oh, and despite being an Everton fan, I think he'd accept a move to 'Pool ... it is the "Friendly Derby", after all ... just look at childhood Evertonians like Fowler, Carra, Macca, and Owen, who had no problems -- neither from their consciences nor from the partisan fans -- in becoming Liverpool icons ...

Aaron Hunt, the best Bremen player in the 1st leg, is confirmed out ... along with Hugo Almeida ... so, only 14 outfielders available ... if they have to chase the game and need to make aggressive changes, they're in a little bit of sh!t ...

http://www.werder.de/english/news/m...ield-players-for-extremely-sporting-challenge

the club themselves have confirmed Marko Marin as the obvious replacement in the creative free role ... Arnautovic can blow hot and cold; for Doria's sake, I hope he gets snuffed out ...

Thomas Schaaf's side isn't known for sitting back and defending resolutely ... Samp will have their chances ... they need to take at least 2, and keep a clean sheet ... very possible, as long as silly mistakes are avoided ... the travelling Sampdoria fans were incredible in the 1st leg; the Marassi will be electric tonight ... Pazzo and Cassà better bring it!

For the life of me I will never understand how someone can watch the Serie A. The diving and complaining from ONE Italian team is enough to piss me off, I can't imagine how infuriating it would be to watch two.

My new most hated player: Gastaldello. He was shameful today.

This post was made after the Markus Rosenberg goal, btw.
