I am currently playing the demo of CM 99/00 but i can't win. First i was Ipswich town and lost to plymouth 3-2 in a friendly. Them I was man utd. and have only 1 win 3 ties and 3 losses so far. Could you please help me with the tactics? What do you recomend and how do you set them up? (which kind of passes, pressing, running etc) I would appreciate your support. Thanks a lot~~~~~~~~~~~

First let me say that Neutral is by farrrr the genius in this area!

But I have a system that has had reasonable success for me in Seria A.

Its a 4-1-2-1-2 formation.

The 4 defenders must be good, but the centre defenders must be above average.

The sweeper can be average. But the 'good-er' the better.

The 2 wingers have to be on the far right and far left of the field and must both be brilliant. They must also be set to run down the field. I have Amoroso(l) and Ortega(r) and they are both having excellent games.

The AMC is very important. He must be a Paul Scholes, Joe Cole, or Alex Aguinaga type. He is sorta like a 3rd forward.

The two strikers just have to be snipers.

Set the passing to short. Neutral will probably have some more suggestions...

BTW Neutral, what is Alan Shearer up to in 2010?? Coaching England I hope??

Futbolguy - the secret winning in CM3 & CM99/00 is to really approach the games as if they were REAL football matches. The game engine is incredibly realistic.

Before, each game one of the first things you want to do is to check out your opponents previous few matches. What tactics did they use? Which players played really well, and which ones are going to require special attention. Then you want to look at your team and see which players are playing well, and which ones aren't. Then you want to try and pick a formation that plays towards your strengths, but also adresses the other team's big players. I'll give you an example, if you're playing a team with a very very good four man midfield - then you might want to try and flood your midfield by playing 5 in the middle and gain an advantage by out numbering them - a 4-5-1 for example. If the opposition has good wingers then you may want to set your wingers to man mark them (only if your wingers have good 'tackling', and 'marking' stats). You also may want to look at the opposition's wingers and see if they have any weaknesses - for example, say their left winger has a low bravery rating - then you should set your right winger (who'll be marking him) to pressing, and hard tackling -that way the opposition player will think twice about going in to win a ball. You could use similar tactics to try and wind-up a player on the other team that has a high aggression rating - set someone to man mark him and get that person to tackle him hard - he may get p!ssed and then lash out at your player = red card = advantage you! (For this strategy look at the specific ref for the game - if he's 'harsh' it may work).

Okay, so midfield is taken care of - but what about your lone forward? Who should you pick? For me, I like to pick my strongest striker with good passing, and then I tell him to 'hold up the ball' - that way when balls come up from midfield he can hold the ball up, and wait for players to come and support him.

For your defence - do they have a good striker? Then it's imperative that you use a good, strong, fast, good tackling, defender with good marking ratings to keep him quiet.

This is just one example - you have to experiment to find the right mix of players and tactics - and you'll have to change depending on the opposition. But with Manchester United, you really have one of the easiest sides to start off with - they're strong in every position. Try a simple 4-4-2, with Stam, Johnsen in the middle - both man marking the opposition's two strikers. Get Stam to hold up the ball. Then Silvestre and Gary Neville on the sides (they're good in the game
). Beckham right - let him run with the ball, and take long shots with mixed passing, and normal tackling - similar thing for Giggs on the left, but no long shots. Set the two arrows for Becks and Giggs to the top. In the middle, set Keane to hold up the ball, and take long shots [also, where it says tackling - set Keane to 'normal' - NOT team - because he's so agressive if you tell him to tackle hard he'll be sent off]. Scholes can run with the ball, take long shots, but don't give him a free role. [the entire midfield is zonal marking]. Then upfront get Andy Cole to run with the ball, and take long shots. And whoever of Cole or Yorke that is stronger get him to hold up the ball to provide service for the other. Then in the team settings choose short passing (United can easily use this approach because all their players are skilled). Pressing (to pressure the opponent) and Hard Tackling (to try and get under the skin of the opposition). Try and alternate 7 minute bursts of pressing because it'll tire out your players. You should easily be able to manage a top 5 position by just using the single tactic! But of course if you want to win the Premiership you're going to have to change things up for the big boys, ie Arsenal, Chelsea, Leeds. Morale is also very important and make sure your players are happy so they can perform to their potential.

Hope this helps, and let us know how you do.

I'm playing with Arsenal right now. I won all my friendlies and beat Man Utd. in the Charity Shield. But then I beat sheffield wed 3-1 and then lost 3 games to liverpool, bradford, and sunderland. I never scored a goal. My formation right now is 3-5-2 and it worked perfect in the beggining. But now i didn't change anything, i still have the same players in every game and same formation. What is wrong? Also I have pressing and everything set to default. Please help. Thanks a lot neutral!!!

Fotbal Guy,

CM is a clever piece of programming. The PC actually adapts to your style of play. If you play the same type of formation all the time, the teams you play will adapt.

Try bringing NEW players into your squad (bench some regular starters for a few games and see what happens)

Try short passing to build up longer and more powerful attacking bursts.

I play CM for about three hours a day (when I get that much time free in a day) - far more than FIFA or any other soccer game. I'd be giving advice myself if I wasn't always losing

However, one tip I'll give is about strikers. Sign one striker who is top notch at Finishing (or if you have no money, use whichever striker has the best finishing) and has a high ability (Robbie Fowler if you have the cash). Go to With Ball and position him right in front of goal on all the three furthermost forward pitch squares.

Next, try and sign a striker with high control and heading as a support striker - think Duncan Ferguson or Emile Heskey (I am using Salas to do this in my game). Position him behind the main striker on the With and Without Ball tactics, and offset to one side on the squares in the top left and right hand corner. Set passing to direct, and your midfielders will now knock it into the strikers, one man will knock it down, and the finisher will strike it in. Time after time...

Is CM only a manager or can you actually play? Which club-teams can you manage (only England?)?

Thanx

No Zambrotta, this is only managing, you follow the game by text, maybe seems boring ,BUT IT'S NOT!
You can control clubs in Brasil, Japan, Italy Sweden..and in A LOT of othes countries, and you can then in each country also control lower division teams and take them up the league system, this is as you might see a large game.

I'm not in a position to give advice either since I always seem close to getting sacked. However, I was managing Benfica and I had the team down as low as 16th in the league then I discovered and bought a young African striker named Oyawole and since I've put him in my line up I've climed up to 7th. So maybe you guys might have the same luck with him.

I been trying to get that Sigporsson guy everyone talks about but he refuses to come to Benfica.

Fotbalguy,
What formation were Bradford (!), Liverpool, and Sunderland playing? You can't really keep the same formation the entire season and win the league - like I said b4, if you find the right team, and play with just one tactic maybe you can get a top 5 place - but you're not going to win. Are you picking the right players for set pieces - corners, free kicks and penalties - that makes a bigger differance than most people imagine. Next time you play a game, check beforehand the previous results of the team that you're playing - look at the games THEY lost - what formation did their opposition play that day? Also look at the strategy used by the opposition - did they use short passing and off side trap? Try to see if you can emulate the same tactics that worked for other teams. But be careful to look at other stats too - sometimes they can dominate but the other team can get lucky and grind out a 1-0 lead - in that case you don't want to pick the tactics that will get you dominated!!

As for going in scoring droughts - is your team dominating - are you getting a lot of shots but they're just not going in? If you're not getting the shots and posession then something's wrong with your midfield. If you're getting the chances but your strikers keep getting low ratings and no goals - then they're probably in a slump.

Now you can do two things, you can either a)stick with them until they finally break through or b)relegate them to the bench or even the reserves. Which you choose depends on the player - for example, if you've got Anelka then you DON'T want to send him to the reserves because he'll sulk and just ask for a transfer. But say Owen isn't banging them in, then you might want to stick him on the bench for a couple of games to send him a message - for smaller status and younger players you can even send them to the reserves - many times a player will rebound and start scoring in no time. Just be sure that it's the player's fault and not the tactics before you screw around with his ego

Kill4Benfica - Sigporsson is the man, everyone talks about Javier Saviola being the best young striker in the game, but Andri has a much better strike rate. Also look out for Kennedy Barikalou - I spelt his last name wrong, but it's along those lines and he's a young Swede - and he's very good.

I am currently trying to buy Javier Saviola in my game, he is currently 18 years old and has 28 goals in 31 games right now in my game, but the team won't give him up...the easiet time to get him is at the begginning of you first season since he hasn't really made a name for himself yet...

I am the only person in here that likes to play with outsidr teams???

C'mon!!!

I played for 26 seasons (10 with Rushden and Diamonds, 1 with a lot of clubs and 16 with Flixton).

and believe me, the fun of this game is to take a shi!tty team and make a world class club out of it.

I am playing with Flixton in the Premiership right now and it is very very boring -- there is nowhere to promote. So, i think about taking another conference team....

About tactics:

If you loose every game, try the computer to make the squad selection for you. Just before the game go on holiday and come back right when the computer finishes simulating the games.

That is how I managed to survive for 26 years.

And a tip about players:

if you start with a team like arsenal, or Manu, or any very good team in England, in your first season, in 1999 go to a 3rd division team named Peterborough. There, there are about 7-8 good youngsters (Jellyman, Rusk, Duncliffe, Byrne, Lang, Etherington, Davies, Koogi, Cable, O'Flynn) that will become a superstars in future. For example: Etherington and Duncliffe won the world player of the year awards TWICE.

So, try to play with conference or serie C teams. I guarantee you it's fun

Buddy, I ALWAYS start at a lower league team - don't think you're alone there. Nothing can compare to the romance of taking your team up through the playoffs. I've started in such places as Rushden and Diamonds, Partick Thistle, Barnet, and Huntly! In CM3 I started at my career at Partick and finished up as manager of Real Madrid - that's what's so amazing about the game. BUT! For people who are just starting out u really have to play with a big name team to get the gist of the game.

Hell yeah Russian Rocket!

I started as the manager of Hereford and worked my way up to AC Parma!

BTW, Andri is the man! So is Luciano Galletti!

I paired the two up front for the first time today against Fiorentina. 5 - nil to ME!

A brace for both Sigporsson and Galletti!

My other striker Hernan Crespo (injured), came off a 5 goal game against Paraguay with Argentina!

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer (another one of my buys) has 6 goals in 5 games!!!

Life is gooood!

one question, how do you see the hidden values for a player? like the disliked teams, etc, that they talk about in that guy's guide to cm 99/00.

also, to sign saviola, don't play as an english team cuz they have some stupid rule about work permits, and sign him as quickly as possible and offer him like 18 million upfront cuz i had to try like 5 times till i got him the first 4 times i made the mistake of not offering him enough money and he kept signing with barcelona.

also, does anyone know of a foreign players limit? cuz i was real madrid and i tried to sign michael duff and they stopped me cuz they said i had too many foreign players or something. are english players considered foreign? oh that's right, they're not in the eu right.

also, i'm really having trouble transfering players, i don't mean my stars but like players i don't need. i tried taking him off the transfer list and lowering the price, but it never works. and the thing is, the squad is usually almost full so i have to get rid of some players to sign some good ones.

GShakan09

oh yeah, robbie keane is awesome! at least for man utd and real madrid in cm3, i don't know about cm99/00 cuz i never signed him there but i think he's just as good.

Well, I always play in England, and when i play I try to develope some British talents. i never try to build a team like Arsenal an Chelsea did for these past 5 years (in reality).

Also, a couple of times, Ferguson was fired from Man. Utd. and, for interest, i applied for job to Manu. they said: "ok". But I declined the offer. Why? 'Cause in my team I had more English youngsters, and more money and stuff.
So, in these 15 years i will probably try tu build another conference team. hope my hard drive still hae space.

P.S.
about world class players:
I have never bought a player like Shevchenko, Saviola, some swedish guy whose name starts with "B" and looks like a Turkish last name or something, Santa Cruz, Beckham because I was busy building my Rushden & D's. When i promoted to the premiership in 2005, some players retired, and other came on (once, in Arsenal's youth systema play "David Beckham" appeared. a 15-ear old. He became a star and retired recently in 2025).

I played about 4 seasons in the Premiership, and then I got to the 4th place. on the next season, chairman told me to stay clear of relegetion, an i did, finishing 16th. But he still fired me. So, I took over a few clubs. A funny thing: Liverpool was a bankrupt team and relegated to 2nd div. in 2006. And almost relegated to 3rd div. then, they changed the board of directors, but haven't been in the premierhsip ever since (in 22 years
). I managed them a couple of months, and finally took over Flixton in conference. And haven't been fired ever since. I am about 60 years old and I think about retireing as a coach and getting another manager and taking a conference team.

cheers,

P.S
I am the best manager in the world right now

P.P.S
one star did play for me, though -- Michael Owen at the age of 40. he retired and he is a coach in my team right now.

P.P.P.S
No, Christian Vieri played for Rushden and Diamonds as player/coach. He is around 50 years old and still a coach in Rushden and Diamonds who play in 1st div. right now.

P.P.P.P.S
there is a player called "Vladimir Tartarchuk". He is 59 right now in 2026 and says that he will retire every year, but he never does. I will wait until he is 70 and sign him as a player

P.P.P.P.P.S

for some reasons, teams like Alfreton Town, Guiseley, Bamber Bridge, Blyth, Emley, Lancaster and Spennymoor whatever have good youth academies; every year they get about 5-6 young wleshmen and irishmen, who become superstars in fitire. Irishmen and Welshmen come to play ONLY from those teams who never promote to the conference. Is that normal?

P.P.P.P.P.P.S
You can see the invisible ratings like "favorite club" in an editor called "JattSave" or "CM Scout"

P.P.P.P.P.P.P.S
Jattsave is a good editor. you can edit almost everything in there.

P.P.P.P.P.P.P.P.S
I haven't used JattSave or any other editor while playing this game

Editing - now THERS a specialist subject

You may remember the very first few editors for CM3 like Total CM3 - my brother and I made them very quickly following the release. Jattomcat, Tri Wasano, and others took up the baton after that. The best pre-game editor WOULD be Jonas' (his is most intuitive), but there is a bug in it that assigns names incorrectly when players are generated. Go for Tri Wasano's latest editor. For real-time editing, grab Parcye made by Colin 'Sigma' Myerscough. Edit team reputation, cash, attendences, match day, stadia etc. while the game is still running. The only option for save-games is Jattsave. This only edits players, not clubs, and is hit and miss (sometimes it doesn't open the Contracts file, sometimes it does). For save-game editing (eg. cheating), there is no other option.

Its always better not to cheat though - and use a decent data update too.

You can edit clubs with jattSave!!!

you cane edit the name, the city, the stadium, the colors, training facilities, and favorite/unfavorite players.

This one doesn't edit the budgets, though.
