Wales to appeal Russia's Euro place

Wales are set to appeal against Russia's participation in Euro 2004 after it was revealed a Russian player failed a drugs test during the qualifying play-offs.

Wales lost 1-0 on aggregate in a hotly-contested two-legged play-off which saw the Russians try to get Ryan Giggs banned from the second leg after an incident in Moscow involving Vadim Evseev.

But now it has emerged that Russia's Yegor Titov failed a drugs test after the first leg in Moscow.

Titov played in the second leg in the Millennium Stadium in Cardiff which the Welsh lost 1-0 to Evseev's headed goal.

But now a source close to the Football Association of Wales has revealed to the Press Association they will contact UEFA on Monday to seek clarification and possibly call for UEFA to throw the Russians out of the finals.

Wales thought their chances of playing this summer had disappeared after play-off defeat but are now set to begin a campaign to take Russia's place in a group which also includes hosts Portugal, Greece and Spain.

Titov was found to have the stimulant bromantan, believed to be a designer drug rather than a prescription medicine, in a sample taken after the play-off first leg in Moscow on November 15.

After playing as a substitute that night in a 0-0 draw Titov started the second leg in Cardiff.

Titov has until Monday to contest the one-year ban imposed by UEFA, meaning he could miss the Euro 2004 finals anyway regardless of his country's fate.

UEFA, who have also asked world governing body FIFA to extend the ban worldwide, have fined the player £4,420, while his club Spartak Moscow have received a £8,840 fine.

Following the first leg in Moscow the Russians called for Giggs to be banned for the second match in Cardiff following an elbowing incident involving Evseev.

Giggs was allowed to play in the second leg but subsequently banned for two matches by UEFA, meaning he will miss Wales' opening two games of their 2006 World Cup qualifying campaign.

Mark Evans, international secretary of the FAW, said: 'Our medical people have checked on the drug and discovered that it was banned from the 1996 Olympics (onwards).

'We will have to ask UEFA what the position is and obviously, whether there is grounds for an appeal. We have a duty to our own supporters to ask the questions.'

The FAW also revealed three of their players passed tests during the play-off legs - Nathan Blake, Darren Barnard and John Hartson (twice).

yep, Titovs banned 12 months, which obviously means hes outta the finals. Wales can keep dreaming, because itll never happen.

If they take Russia out and put Wales instead lot of bad things will happen.

Titov is not thinking wise, just cause he hasn't been in his World Cup shape he decided to take stimulants? Not a big blow, the only reason he got a start in the second leg was because Mostovoi had 2 yellows.

Are you sure this is true cause I doubt Titov take any drugs

Yes Russia can still be removed from the tourney remember Euro92 where they taken out right before the tourney and replaced by Denmark who magically won it.

It was Yugoslavia because of the balkans war. Russia was in Euro92 included in the C.I.S. team. (ex-soviet republics)

What will happen if UEFA considers Wales' appeal?
A rematch isn't really possible because clubs would complain

I doubt anything will come of it. I mean, the player will be banned, and that should be sufficient. It's not like he impacted the games so much to be the only reason Russia won. I think it's more or less just gamesmanship from Wales, since Russia tried to get Giggs banned. Wales is just tryin' to be a thorn in the Ruskies' side, and I think it's a little funny.;)

You trying to say, that only russians eat drugs???
To ban the whole team because of one guilty player - it is not fair.
Possible Wales promotion to Euro2004 is not worthy(and impossible ;))- you did not see as they behaved in play-off matches - complete losers, trying to make their way for Euro2004 by any methods

Wales have every right to appeal and even tho I like Russias team with great players like Mostovoi, I almost hope for the appeal to carry through.

drugs are always drugs, you know what happened to Rio, and there was never anything found from him.

It's highly unlikely for anything except the Titov ban to result from this, anythings possible now and Giggs would really deserve to play on a international tournament for once!

mika, you have a brilliant sig! who made it for you? or did you make it by yourself? (Y)

Giggs doesn't deserve it(In games against Russia it was obvious)!
If he plays well in ManUtd - let him play only there!

To disqualify the whole team Russia?
Because of ONE player?

Why Manchester United wasn't disqualified from Champions League because Rio Ferdinand was disqualified? (the same drugs situation) Yeah, the drugs were not found, but he was disqualified because of the drugs! BTW, he played for English national team before this... What about participation of team England in EURO 2004? As you said: drugs are always drugs. ;)

So who will replace all this teams? Lets guess...
Panathinaikos instead of Manchester United...
Turkey or Slovakia instead of England...
Wales instead of Russia...

Do you think this is right? ;)

P. S. I'm not a doctor, I don't know how they take bromantan, but Egor Titov even couldn't know, that some idiot from the club Spartak Moscow :f***: gave him bromantan with a food or gave him some medicine "from flu".

Ferdinand hasnt played for england since the match with croatia in august. He missed his drug test a few days after a league match at end of sept so u cant say england should be kicked out. allthough if it was after a qualifying game i assure u blatter would have kicked england out the Anti-English c**t
