Walk the Line

Walk the Line? Now I ain't gonna come here to blow smoke up yer queer asses and pretend like I'm/was a big fan of Johnny Cash or carry on like I give much of a **** about Country music in general because I don't, but I'm a huge fan of WooKeen Phoenix (how my little cousin pronounces his name) and have seen the trailer and heard really good things about it from folks who've been lucky enough to get an early viewing of it.

The Oscar folks will be all over this flick like a cheap Turkish suit, man. Doubt it'll top Ray interms of all the hoopla and ****, but I can see Wookeen walking away with the best actor award next year.

I believe it's being debuted here at the Toronto Film Festival this week........if it's not too late, I'm gonna try to score me some tickets for this flick and a couple of others.

I hate country music and I was never a fan of Johnny Cash but this looks a pretty decent movie.

It's funny how the lead actor in a biopic nearly always gets rave reviews/oscar(nomination) for his performance.

Nice, bro, NICCCCEEEE! I see that you also dig Stand by me (One of the first DVDs that I ever purchased).....*oh ****, I'm already detracting from the thread's original intent*.....ah well...... It's been a family favourite at our home ever since I could remember, man. We watched the first VHS so much that we corrupted the tape, no lie. Boy did that movie leave an indelible mark on me growing up.....didn't find out that it was a Stephen King Novella until later on. Easily one of my favourite movies of all time, man. One of those movies that I've memorized scene for scene, quotable line for quotable line yet I still find myself watching it everytime it's shown on the television. No matter what else is on or whatever the **** I'm supposed to be doing at that particular time, I've gotta make the time for it.

Pretty weird that O'Connell turned out to be the most successful out of the four, eh? River (poor bastard...another actor that I've committed myself to completing their filmography), Cory (he had some great roles before and after Stand by me, but what a waste of talent he turned out to be, eh?), Wil, he's had some personal outstanding roles since that film, but he's also kinda fallen into obscurity, man.

The voice over at the end by Dreyfuss just kills me everytime, man. Always makes me bawl like a baby, man.

Gordie: **** writing, I don't want to be a writer. It's stupid, it's a stupid waste of time.
Chris: That's your dad talking.
Gordie: Bull****.
Chris: Bull true

LOLzer.....*sigh*

Spot the link between Walk The Line and Stand By Me? Yes, River and Juaquin Phoenix.

Anyway, I'd say Kiefer Sutherland is the most famous...although I suppose you meant who turned out the most famous of the kids eh.

I believe he spent some time with Johnny before his death and Johnny gave 'em his blessing a la Ray and Jamie to play him on screen.

I still haven't bothered to check out Ray....hmmm. Anywhere near as good as it was being portrayed to be before the Oscars?

Yeah, it really is that good. Jamie Foxx is amazing as Ray Charles. The way he moves, talks, you are watching Ray Charles.

I'm not quite sure as to what you were getting at by this sentence, bro. Care to rephrase it?

I just thought it was funny how the movie Stand By Me came up in a topic about Walk The Line since River Phoenix starred in Stand By Me and Joaquin Phoenix (they're brothers) stars in Walk The Line. Funny how there's a link between the two movies, albeit a small one.

Ahh, coolies, bro. Yeah, I thought I read you correctly the first time, but I was just dumbfounded at first since you were stating the obvious, so, inturn, my mind rationalized that there was something else to that sentence than you just simply stating River being the brother of Joaquin.

Carry on....

hope it's better than Ray, because when I went to see Ray, I found it so dull and boring than by the middle of it I was already rooting for the MF to die already.

I am the total opposite to all you guys - I love country music in general and Johnny Cash in particular but hate Joaquin Pheonix and think hes a terrible actor. Furthermore, no way is he a natural for the part the way Jamie Foxx was a natural to play Ray Charles - I thought that was a great biopic and a great film, from the nominations I would have given in the oscar (though Hotel Rwanda deserved it) last year. However I'm really worried that this film is going to butcher the memory of this legend, however, I will definately see it and if I am wrong then I will be the first to admit it and would be more than happy for Pheonix to take the oscar. If.

Hey, man. I think it's really awesome that someone of your age has such a great appreciation and affection for Country music. I tried and tried to get a better understanding of the genre, but it just never won me over completely for me to go out of my way to listen to it on the regular, man. There's definitely been a ton of Country music that I've been exposed to circumstantially over the years that I've enjoyed immensely, though. But I just couldn't force myself to become a Johnny come lately all of a sudden with all the attention Johnny and the genre itself in general have been getting over the last couple of years. You should see all my friends, it's unreal to be honest. Johnny makes this unbelievable crossover with that NIN cover and almost instantly they become poseurs and experts on everything Johnny and Country music.........sheesh!

Also, I can't quite fathom how you can call such an esteemed and highly competent actor as Joaquin a "terrible" performer, though. The dude is known as a 'Scene stealer" in Hollywood. He can have a ten second scene and come away with the most impact from a movie. He goes out of his way to take very different and particularly hard roles. I liken 'em to Depp. He's very versatile and isn't the least bit hesitant about taking risks. The only obvious barrier for him in pulling off Johnny is his physical stature, but with his skill and adeptness, it shouldn't be too hard. I mean, he's had the Cash family backing to do this role and his facial structure is eerily uncanny to a younger Johnny so it shouldn't be all that too questionable in the end product.

I got into country music through Tarantino soundtracks :p I have every Steely Shifty album available, and then I saw the film Nashville which furthered my liking for it. I have to say that I tend towards the country rock more than the pure country, Bob Dylan and Bruce Springsteen being two of my very favourite musicians, aswell as the experimental stuff of my other favourite Tom Waits, but Johnny Cash is just so full of talent and his songs are so raw and powerful that I love them. I'm really into the whole Beat Generation/Gonzo Journalism scene aswell, I love that school of thought and that take on hedonism, and country seems to me to be the natural music of that scene, along with Jazz which I am only now getting more into, especially the Buena Vista Social Club which play a selection of beautiful Cuban jazz ballards.

I've gotta be honest and say that I'm not really very familiar with Joaquin's work, I have only seen him in a couple of films but did not think much of him. I think what I'm trying to say is that where before Ray I just knew that Jamie Foxx would do it perfectly, I have real worries that Pheonix will be very substandard as Cash. If he does butcher the memory of this legend I will personally kill him, if he proves me wrong I will be the first to wish him the oscar.

Jazz and Blues, my favourite music genre, I could listen to a bit of Clapton, Hendrix, BB King, Stevie Ray Vaughan, Muddy Waters all day as well as awesome jazz artists as Oscar Petersen, Dave Brubeck. You haven't discovered real music until you've discovered jazz and blues...that's where all great got their inspiration from too (for instance Hendrix's background is blues).

However I could never get into country, who cares if the local postman slept with your wife or your crops didn't grow. All that whiney voice thing these country singers got going on, bleh.

Sir_Didier_Drogba, you consider Bob Dylan and Springsteen country? Dylan is folk and Springsteen is rock and Steely Shifty isn't really country either.

May I reply to you with a quote from "24 Hour Party People"

Tony Wilson: "Jazz is the last refuge of the untalented. That's why Jazz musicians enjoy themselves more than anyone listening to them does."

I described them as country rock, technically I'd say Springsteen was stadium rock but it's close, and Dylan is definately on the boundry of country. I did say that I was more a fan of that sort of music than conventional country. Steely Shifty are not a country band but recorded a helleva lot of country tracks.

Totally agree with you about Jazz and the Blues though, and Soul aswell, though I only properly enjoy it in the right atmosphere, such as an old style jazz club or a late night poker session. Just to listen to I find some of it a little difficult to digest.
