Wasted talents

Yeah, but Michael Owen also had some damn fine seasons and has scored a lot of goals. He's still young, so maybe he can recover, but I don't think he'll ever be the same.

Owen a wasted talent? He's played for an English topclub, won cups with them and played countless international matches...How's that a wasted talent? Wasted talents are players with Michael Owen's talent playing at Exeter City...

Well, it's like I said earlier... it depends what you consider a wasted talent.

1) A guy who never realized his full potential either due to laziness, retardedness, alcohol, injury etc.

2) A great player who played his career at a small club, which I don't consider a waste of talent. If he always played at a high level and played well, but decided to play in a small club, I think that's fine. He didn't waste his talent, but maybe wasted opportunities to win things.

i'll nominate Lee Sharpe. came in around the same time as gigs. they both displayed excellent skill and finishing touches, but they got to be friends and involved in the seedier side of proffessional football. namely womanising, gambling and boozing. Fergie gave them hell alot of the time for it but it was only giggs who heeded the warnings, and sharpe didnt. which is a great shame cos was truely a great player

havent read all the thread but has anyone said Gazza yet?

Lee Sharpe said it was one of the reasons Ferguson got rid of him at Man Utd. He once went round to Lee Sharpes house when there was a party happening, put an end to the party, shouting at Ryan Giggs and Sharpe, telling Giggs how his career was going to do down the pan. I think one of the reasons Fergie is such a good manager at developing youth is because he actually cares and see's to it that his young players dont ruin their careers. I always liked the clause in Rooney's contract that stated hes not allowed to live a certain distance away from Fergie :p

Can't believe no-one has mentioned the late, George Best. The guy had the world at his feet before being sacked by Manchester United because of his partying and from then on it was all downhill.

True but I'm relatively young yet I've seen quite a bit of footage of him playing and read about his career.

For a more recent example what about, Stan Collymore?

Best's was a sad story, it's true.

Collymore is definitely another one. What the hell happened to him?

True, but Best did win a European Cup and is widely seen as a legend - the one's we're talking about really didn't hit the heights at all. Although George certainly could have been greater than he was.

Don't have a go at me here...
...I feel that Wayne Rooney has not lived up to the early promise.

No doubt he's a legend, but surely the definition of a wasted talent, like Zlo siad is not achieving your full potential...Best was sacked in his mid twenties was he not? Who knows what he could of went on to win had drink not got the better of him.

True, but at least he did reach the top level, however brief it was. For me, it's a bigger waste when naturally gifted players don't even reach the heights for a brief time - You could argue that even Diego Maradona could have achieved an even greater level than he did - were it not for his demons. I think though it's a bigger waste for people to have never shone on the World stage, both Best and Maradona achieved that. (Well Best was never at the World Cup because N Ireland never made it, but you get my point)

I'm not arguing, I do see where you're coming from. (Y)

can't believe noone's mentioned Denilson
also:
Sebastian Deisler (was meant to be the next star of German football in 2000)
Michael Ricketts hahahaha 1 cap for England
Anti Niemi (always being linked to a big club but never got the chance)
Liam Miller (was greedy to leave Celtic, what's he doing now???)
Van Bronckhorst - could have been a great midfielder, excellent attacking strengths early in his career but no ambition meant he plays as sideback
Charlie Miller - too much drinking, was meant to be a huge talent
Gazza - never truly fullfilled his talent
Fabian Carini - was a very promising young player, great 2002 world cup but again a lack of ambition?
