...I feel that Wayne Rooney has not lived up to the early promise.

You're right.

He could be much better if he wasn't such a dumbass.

Nobody mentioned Aliadiere, he has 1 league goal in 8 years. Most of it is due to injuries, but it's still a sad return.

Ariel Ortega. Mind you any young Argentine who can dribble a bit is immediately tagged "the new Maradonna" talk about pressure!

Biggest waste of talent AND money has got to be our friend Denílson de Oliveira Araújo, now plying his trade in Saudi Arabia
;)

Van Bronckhorst - could have been a great midfielder, excellent attacking strengths early in his career but no ambition meant he plays as sideback

Except that he won La Liga twice and the CL, and was pretty good in his first couple of seasons with Barca as a big part of their squad. It's only in the past year that his level has dropped off somewhat. Also a fixture in the Dutch side for years. I wouldn't call that a waste of talent.

he's an above average left back at best, I wouldn't call him one of the worlds' best. But early in his career he was a great emerging midfielder with awesome skill and some great goals. Guess you have to lay the blame on Rijkaard a bit cause he played him left back when he was coach of the NT then bought him to play that role at Barca. I mean, Edmilson plays DM at Barca, Gio would do a much better job I think, he possesses much more skill

Don't get me wrong, he's not one of the world's best. But he got the job done and wasn't terrible. His attacking abilities were definitely in evidence through those two great seasons. Admittedly, I haven't seen much of his early career, so I couldn't give you an opinion on his prospects as a MF.

He has played there in a few games in an emergency role, and done decently, but I don't think he would do better than Edmilson or Marquez at DM, because he's not strong enough. His defending is not exactly great.

It's funny, but I think he has developed into a quite good LB, with a good attacking game overall. Remember, he was rebuilt by Rijkaard after not really having much luck at Arsenal, and he became a regular for the Dutch side as LB, whereas before he was mainly on spot duty as a MF.

Whatever happened to Carlos Marinelli one of the many guys dubbed the new Maradona.

He's resurfaced in MLS with Kansas City, and based on early returns, he could end up being a good signing for the club.

Mauricio

El Gran DT
C. Vieri.- He had brilliant seasons, but i still think he could done better, he had all the talent to be a legend i think he is not.

Cassano.- What happened with this guy?
Woodgate.- He had all the talent but a lot of injuries

And i can mentioned a hundred of Mexicans:

Borgetti, Blanco.- Yeah they were great in Mexican League but they could done some good stuff in the big stage (Europe)

Cassano is still young. If he gets back in shape and back to playing regularly, I think he'll still make his mark.

As for Woody, he's also relatively young. He could still become a Middlesbrough legend :funny:

Shaun Wright-Phillips.

Nah i totaly disagree i just dont think he gets much of a chance at chelsea. Needs a move to play on a starting line-up team if you ask me.

and.. I dont think Owen has been doing as well as he could for the past cupple of years. That injury didnt help things though.

Any player that played at Inter. :(

Ronaldo was smart enough to pull himself out before it was too late.

1. Ronaldo was at his best during his Inter days.

2. Ibrahimovic greatly imroved THIS YEAR with Inter. He is being recognised as a possible candidate for the golden ball.

Alvaro Recoba. If he didnt suffer from so many injuries, he wouldve won a golden ball, and been considered one of the greatest players of this generation.

So true. Had he not been plagued by injuries, he would have been a legend, like Pele and the other big names. His talent is almost limitless. Yet, all those injuries. When on form, hes unstoppable. See the last inter match.

Fabian Carini - was a very promising young player, great 2002 world cup but again a lack of ambition?

I don't think lack of ambition is the problem, if anything I'd say he's too ambitious (read greedy). He had transfers to Arsenal and Grêmio (IIRC) set up that fell through because of his exorbitant wage demands. He's always had to compete against established goalkeepers (van Der Sar and Buffon at Juve, Toldo at Inter), so his opportunities in goal were always few and far between. Since moving from Danubio the only time in which he's had any form of continuity was when he went on loan to Standard Leige.

He continues being picked as the first choice GK for Uruguay even though he practically never gets any playtime at his club ("¡Gracias Paco!"). I've always thought he was a tad overrated. He is good, I won't deny that he's pulled off some great performances for Uruguay, it's just that the 90's were filled with mediocre or downright poor uruguayan goalkeepers alternating in the NT (Roberto Siboldi, Leonardo Romay, Carlos Nicola, Jorge Arbiza, Oscar Ferro and Claudio Flores, even Fernando Alvez with about 39 or 40 years), that when he popped up everyone pretty much tagged him as the savior of the NT.

Personally, right now, I'd prefer Juan Castillo (Peñarol), Martin Silva (Defensor) or even Sebastián Viera (Villareal) ahead of Carini. Particularly Castillo, but that's just me.

Yea, it's a known fact Ronaldo's best days came when he was playing for Barça. 34 goals in La Liga in his debut season if i'm not mistaken. That's just plain unreal.

Don't forget his stint at PSV before going to Barcelona.
