it was a penalty okay

the f*ckin australian a*shole layed on the grass right in front of grosso and made him trip, all grosso did was try to jump over the a*shole and continue playing the ball, he didn't dive

Come on Mika it was a dive, at least you have to admit that, try jumping over him lol :rofl:
It was what the Germans call a 'Schwalbe' nothing more and nothing less  and the ref was too tired to give ET so he gave the pen ridiculous.

Nice game... Deserved result... Italy pressured far more and much better than the Aussies up to the red card (Which was unjust.) Especially in the first half when Italy looked like they were going to break through perhaps if it wasn't for a few nice saves by Schwarzer (Spelling?) Aust had a few chances here and there but nothing that rattled Buffon. It should have been 2-0 Italy at the break, but it wasn't.

Second half started a bit slower but seemed as if it was heading down the same path as the first half until Materazzi was sent off... Yellow card? YES. Foul? YES. Red card? Absolutely not! It wasn't like Materazzi was really clumsy all games with his fouls and the ref never even had a talk with him. A straight red for that? Definitely harsh but more importantly it changed the entire shape of the game. First off Italy had to take off Toni who owned Aust and seemed like he was about to put one in. Then you have to play much more defensively and counter attack during a few smart occassions = really hurts your chance at getting a goal.

Aust, up one man then began to take over and dominated much of the half but really never took advantage of the one man advantage and that's partially because of the Italian defense which was brilliant as they usually are. They did have some very good opps that were just missed, for example Cahill's header off the corner was close. Breasciano also had some good strikes outside the 18.

The Totti sub was obviously coming and anyone with a brain knew it... I was hoping it would have come a bit sooner because of Del Pierro's lack of good play after the first ten minutes of the game.

The penalty shot was just... I am sure many fans believe it wasn't (Especially the Aussie fans.) Don't get me wrong, it wasn't a harsh foul but it was a foul that enabled Grosso the opportunity illegally to get a good shot on net, which he would of had.

Most of the Italian team played well with a few exceptions. Gilardino didn't do much other then a few shots here and there early in the first half. Del Pierro never really had control of the mid area which is his job at the top of the triangle offense. With that said, I would still start him in the quarters and bring on Totti earlier in the second half. Pirlo didn't have a horrible game but he could of made some better decisions with the ball and some set pieces.

Gattuso was an animal, LOVE IT! Zambrotta played very hard and well.. I loved Buffon taking charge of the D when Italy went down a guy, definitely acted like a second captain. Toni was very dangerous out there rushing back to the 50 yard line just to get a touch on the ball. He was unfortunate to not get a goal (Nice saves Shwarzer.) Materazzi, IMO owned Viduka and then was sent off unfairly. Again, a yellow would have done justice in that situation. Too many refs this WC are throwing around the red like it's a piece of cake! Finally, Totti comes clutch in an extremely difficult sitaution. If they would have went into OT, I think Aust would have won.

The classic 4th of July semifinal match is coming like I stated a while back... I know not to jump the gun, but sometimes the excitement you just can't hold back.

only watched random bits of the match, and it didn't seem like I missed much.
after watching the highlights I must say that Materazzi's red card was too harsh, and that penalty call was an absolute farce.

Congrats to Australia for their good effort in this WC, and to Italy for getting through.

Actually there was a FIFA where you could dive. I think it was 99 or 00, one of the crappy editions. But it was SHIFT + Q.

It was RTWC '98 and it was the best FIFA ever made. Everything since 2000 can be considered crappy editions.

On topic, FIFA needs to sort the refereeing out. At this stage, there should only be the very best of referees from the very best leagues. The policy they apply sees referees from as many regions as possible, but that's not the way to go. It's best to have a small but reliable bunch of established refs getting as many games as possible. Or get Collina back and let him ref every single game there is :jap:

Ah Collina now that was a class ref :$ :$
Better send Markus Merk home just to be safe ;) he will probably get the finals
Spanish media is allover Cartalejo or whatever this blind bat's name is, saying it's a disgrace for football and for Spain
Just like the Russian media is allover that c*nt Ivanov for his performance yesterday when he made a mess of the game. I really hope these refs will be fired on the spot and that we won't meet them in a CL game next season or all hell breaks loose.

How much did the Italians pay the ref? Hope its enough to keep Guus' new Russian mafia off his back....

How much did the Australians pay the ref to give Materazzi that red card???

No one paid anyone, the ref was just being fair when he sent off Materazzi so he could even it out to 11 players/ref on each side.

It's unbelievable how f.ucking naive Italians are sometimes. Each and every one of you know that was a blatant dive in the box, and for those of you who have the audacity to say it was justified need a dropkick to the face. Materazzi's card was not justified either, but I guarantee that if the tables were turned, and it was Austrailia being awarded a last minute penalty, you would all be ****ting yourselves. I'm not surprised actually, its a typical response from most of you.

nevertheless, the world will remain patient because if and when Italy is eliminated, you will feel it.

i dont care if it was a dive because we were one man down for no reason and that changed the way we played the whole second half, im sure we would of won it 11vs11.

to the australians who keep talking about the ref being payed :boohoo:

ok so it was a bad call, what the hell do you want the rest of us to do about it? if this call had happened against say England or Spain, the people in England or Spain would think just the same as you do but it wasn't the traditional dive, he was looking to get brought down and the ref bought it. Australia should be proud of what they achieved.

Hah i was right about the 1-0 again.:jambo:

Probably Italy deserved to win, but maybe not this way it didn't look right. But nevermind, Australia shouldn't feel ashamed they did great on this world cup.:jambo:

I am reading through some of these posts and it seems as if many of you guys are saying that Italy didn't deserve to win? What are you freagin retarded? What game did you watch? Take your head out of your arses and watch the replay tonight and make sense.

Breaking away from the ref and all the controversy, I thought Lippi's selections were questionable at best. I know that Totti has not fared well so far, but why start Del Piero in his place> Del Piero should not even be on the team.

And since when is a Iaquinta better than Inzaghi? It's a shame that Inzaghi isn't playing more, he tore it up with Milan last season but Lippi won't play him because they had some beef with each other while both were at Juventus. :kader:

Italy outplayed Austrailia, I am not contesting that at all. The issue at hand is not who outplayed who, but rather the dubious penalty in the dieing minutes of the second half. So yeah, Italy played better, but they didn't deserve to win the way they did. It would have been much more gratifying for everyone had the game ended on a positive rather than controversial note.
