Italy outplayed Austrailia, I am not contesting that at all. The issue at hand is not who outplayed who, but rather the dubious penalty in the dieing minutes of the second half. So yeah, Italy played better, but they didn't deserve to win the way they did. It would have been much more gratifying for everyone had the game ended on a positive rather than controversial note.

Yea but at the same time Materazzi's red card wasn't just and that impacted the game in a tremendous way. The fact is that Italy deserved to win and they did no matter how they got it done. At the same time the Aussie's played well and more importantly fought hard, but the deserved team went through.

i really dont care what anyone says. if it wasnt for materazzi being sent off(what a joke), italy would have put it away. hell, we still had more chances than the aussies and we were down to 10 men for 40 mins.

austrailia did absolutely nothing to deserve the victory. they didnt deserve the harsh way they lost but, even though i was nervous, i knew we would pull it out. buffon was never tested. our defence was magnificent again, i can ask for nothing more. again, if materazzi wasnt sent off, we would have scored.

also, i love it how people are talking about grosso as if he was deco or totti. i also love how people are like, diving is disgraceful, those guys should burn in hell. am i missing something here, this is soccer, everyone dives. it is something that needs to be rid of, but it is what it is. people are acting as if this was the first dive of the tournament.

I didnt read the bullsh*t comments before this one, and im not gonna read the ones after it. the ONLY reason Australia even had a chance was because Materazzi was sent off for the biggest bullsh*t red card of the tourney. Neil blocked off Grosso,,, and than Totti scored the biggest goal of his career. Im taking off work today and ******* celebrating.

So ya, f*ck all the ppl who will be saying Italy didnt deserve to win

GRANDEEE TOTTIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIII !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

what mikey said, 10X.

Spot on. I barely saw Buffon get challenged, at any moment. :|

hahahahaha, i tip my cap to you, sir. :jap:

oh we only topped one of the groups of deaths and people say we dont deserve to be where we are. comments like that make me laugh.

and finally, thank you francesco.

Sad to see Australia go out on a last minute penalty, but Italy was the better side.

What a shot by Totti.

after watching Shevashenko trip himself over to allow Ukraine to qualify i thought FIFA were going to do something about diving in football. If they really want to eradicate this disease from the beautiful game then they need to go back and play the extra time.

i think people are missing Hidinks tactics here.... he was trying to wear them down get into extra time and then attack a tired ten man team. thats why there was only 1 sub, but Groucho or whoever he was fell like a jellyfish in a fairy costume. Neill had stopped moving. he was lying still on the ground! If he really wanted to score he would have jumped the defender and taken a shot or pass.

Very sad sight to see. a Sad day in football history.

So your stragedy was to get spanked around and bring it into extra time? You have to capatalize when you have a man advantage especially with this world cup when there have been a few games with more than 2 red cards. Australia was also walking a fine line with several yellows so that stragedy makes no sense.

Actually it does make perfect sense. It's a gamble, but Hiddink is known for such. And seriously, no-one was 'spanked around'. It was a dull performance by both.

Surprise surprise, the Italians have to cheat their way through. Football is becoming more and more pathetic with this constant cheating and diving.

I thought this was a good game, the ref didn't make the right calls too many extents but those complaining about the dive blame that defender. He commited himself like 5 seconds before russo did anything.... what a dumbass. Its like saying plz trip over my legs, the guy must kicking himself costed his country the world cup.

A Australia got a god send for half a game when they were a man up after a falsecarded red and still couldn't beat italy

so for those saying Italy won unfairly wake up... Australia had 40 mintues to win unfairly and they couldn't while Italy actually took advantage of winning unfairly... 2 negatives cross eachother out for a positive... its math so those are the breaks. You have to blame australia for this, they should have scored when Italy went a man down gbut didnt.

If I have to whip out stats... Italy outplayed the Aussies, to deny that illustrates a lack of intelligence.

you support what national team again? I hope you are just as enraged when a Portugese player does it

Sadly, he is exactly right. Everyone dives. Everyone. Not a team on the face of the earth is innocent, except for a few with only domestic players in Scotland's championship.

I have the awful feeling that simulation will never get weeded out of this game. Its only going to get worse and worse. Referees should just stop calling fouls on chronic abusers. Then when scumbags like Materazzi and Essien hack their legs off, they will learn soon enough

All the stats in the world won't change the fact that it was a dull game. Italy did nothing to get excited about. They may have edged the stats, but so what. They were never looking like edging the game and neither were the aussies.

That is of course if they didn't go on an amazing run of incredible strikes from 60' to 78', didn't see that period cause I happened to fall asleep :(

You're right, stats prove nothing, but watching the game does and Italy outplayed them by far... Lucky it wasn't 2-0 at half... Problem was we couldn't get the last strike... The movement of the ball/players and passes was dominated by Italy up to the red card.

Well, good, but you make it sound like you were keeping them under tremendous pressure. You did not. You talk about stats, well, Aussies won the possession in the 1st half. You were more accurate with your passes, yes, more dominant overall, maybe, but not in a way that the penalty would have been just a logical outcome of what had been happening. I'm saying this from a completely neutral viewpoint, there really was nothing to get excited about. Including the period before the red card.

Anyways, to argue about who deserved the win is stupid, the team who score more always deserve it. Even the Italy team in Euro 2000 deserved their win against Holland because they scored more in the pen shootout. But THIS was a game in which one team were always going to edge it but never did. Today's wasn't anything like it. It was a borefest, two dull sides playing each other, take it as you wish.

Harsh penalty but Australia deserved to go out for their negative tactics, even when Italy went a man down (which was a **** call) they still played a lone striker and looked like taking the game to penalties. Italy always looked more dangerous on the counter attack , Australia can't have to many complaints.

Got to love the people who try to sound intelligent and say, "Oh, had it not been called, everyone would be crying penalty!" or "Italy deserved to win the game anyway!"

I know this is your first experience with soccer for alot of you guys, but just because a team is outplaying the other doesn't mean they get awarded penalties for it. Grosso did well, beat the Aussie and probably could have kept going to goal and scored or set up a tap-in goal. Instead, in typical fashion, remembers that the referees have been giving a penalty for every dive, so just goes out of his own way to fall over the defender. Bravo. Italy has now benefitted from game-changing calls and non-calls in their game against Ghana, the US, and now Australia. At some point, the logical thinking person would be like, "okay, Italy has gotten really lucky with refereeing, but it will come around." However, I don't think we have seen the last of some favoring by the officials.
