Mexico hungry for revenge against U.S.
MEXICO CITY, March 22 (Reuters) - Mexico go into Sunday's World Cup qualifier against the United States hungry for revenge after being knocked out of the 2002 finals by their neighbours.
"After the last World Cup, this fixture has acquired great significance for me," said team captain Rafael Marquez, who has especially bitter memories of the second round match when he was sent off for elbowing Cobi Jones and banned for three games.
"We certainly can't let them pass over us at home," the Barcelona player told Mexican media.
"When we play them, we have to remember what happened to us. They knocked us out of the World Cup and it's something I'll never forget, it was a very difficult experience."
Mexico and the U.S. both won their opening matches away from home in the six-team final stage of the CONCACAF qualifiers last month.
Both are expected to be among the three teams who qualify directly from the group for the 2006 finals in Germany.
* Midfielder Pavel Pardo said he wanted to win for the millions of Mexican immigrants in the U.S.
"For all the Hispanics who live there and suffer in various situations, the fact that Mexico beats the United States is a glory, because we know we're representing millions of Mexicans," he told the sports daily Record.
Midfielder Jaime Lozano even hoped Mexico could help make the U.S. fail to qualify from the group, which also includes Costa Rica, Guatemala, Panama and Trinidad & Tobago.
"We have to avenge the elimination we suffered at the last World Cup, now it's our turn to knock them out," he said. ---Yahoo!
