That's wrong. Everything I've ever read says that it means "white man's hole" in a dialect of the Aboriginal languages. The Aboriginal term would more corrrectly be spelt "kupa-piti".

Early transliteration gone wrong most likely. I'd say they didn't have an official transliteration until after the name was well in use.

Apparently the term "kupa" means uninitiated man - so can man outsider (white man) or not. Piti means hole - be it water hole, or just plain hole.

When the name was given to the place, it was the indigenous population referring to the white miners.
