As somebody mentioned before, it has to be the sloppiness.
Everything seems to be left half-done. Every year something nice and fancy is thrown in, but it isn't finished. Off the Ball sounded great, looked dandy in the preview videos, but in the actual game it just didn't work (reasons in previous posts). Same thing with this career mode, sounded great but when injury tables are awry, trading isn't possible for SA teams and not to mention the whole Champions League fiasco, it loses the point. It is frustrating! Interface is stubborn! Due to three different generic faces, every non-faced opponent looks the same! Appearences are wrong, feet are wrong, everything has some small or larger mistake. If there were one or two bugs I wouldn't care, but when absolutely nothing works as it should I lose my temper. I know that game developing is hard work and EA has loads of talented employees, but all this sloppiness just makes one imagine the programmers eating donoughts and playing Scorched Earth all day. Why do the NBA, NHL and NFL series always compete for the top spot game of their respective sports, but FIFA hasn't been near the podium for years? And another thing, why do all the nice features appear in the other EA games years before FIFA? NHL had seasons with all the '04 career mode features way back and NBA '96 had differing player heights in 1995! ON THE SEGA MEGADRIVE! Might be small things but, seriously, don't the different EASports divisions talk to each other and share ideas? I thought buying games from a big company with a wide array of titles ment that you could expect an all around high standard of work because the different programmers communicated and brought their knowledge together in order to lessen mistakes and to create a creative and technological edge over competitors, but no! I'm not even going to start to ponder on the reasons why the FIFA series lays so astray from the other titles.
FIFA hasn't been FUN since '98. I have found myself enjoying skateboarding games and FPS's even though I thought I disliked the whole genres. Why? Because they have few bugs and the characters do what I tell them to. Currently I am enjoying NHL '97 on my SEGA Megadrive/Genesis. It is fun. All the features work as they should, and because my players do what I want them to I am not annoyed at problems like inexistent power play formations. Every day the opponent or I score a neat goal in a way I haven't witnessed before. In the FIFA series it took two days to see all the different possible ways of scoring.
EA, why don't you just release a basic Sensible Soccer clone with no bugs and all the features working, and start building a new series from scratch? The current development of the FIFA series reminds me of my high school art projects. Nice shades of colours splashed on to canvas three hours before the work was due. I just barely passed, but that was my only goal. Is it yours as well?
