wireless network

imagine my joy as i began to set up my wireless network. dreams of internet and file access anywhere in my house flashed across my mind as i set down to work.

now imagine how f*cked off i am, that 6 hours later the sodding thing still doesn't do what it's supposed to!

i'm trying to connect a laptop and a desktop so that they share one broadband connection and files with each other.

the internet sharing is ok, works fine. but the files are another story.

i'm using a linkysys WRT54G broadband router, and have my desktop wired into it along with my broadband modem. i set it up as the (very unhelpful!) manual said and was pleased to see that it all connected to the internet. same when i installed the pcmcia card on my laptop.

i set both computers up so that their network identification was on the same workgroup, and that's where the fun started! the first computer that connected to the network also connected to the workgroup, but would not connect to the other computer. i got a msg saying "Desktop is unavailable. You might not have permission to use this network resource. Contract the administrator of this server to find out if you have access permissions. This server address was not found on the workgroup", despite the fact there was an icon for the Desktop computer.

Desktop would not even connect to the workgroup, same msg as above but it said workgroup is unavaible and the list of servers for this work group is currently unavaible.

i'm guessing there's something i have to change in the router's security, but i can't for the life of me figure out wtf it is.

i'd try linksys's tech support.... only it's non existent.

Have you got admin status on the Windows version your using?

I had some major probs too, I also have Linksys wireless network (WMP54G) set up but it wasn't very easy to get going, there were some complications setting up the router to the computers and the modem but finally I got someone in to fix it all up so I have no idea how he did it. Did you install all the software and drivers? stupid question, I know.
I did hear that Linksys helpdesk is pretty useless (even though they make the best WLan....strange eh) They do have a phone no. you can contact (it's somewhere in the back of the manual or on some card I think)

i have admin rights on both comps, so i'm still stumped! The linksys tech support suck ass!

I dunno about British providers, but many American cable internet providers will help you set up wireless networks, even give you the right kind of equipment. Try contacting the provider of the internet service.

You do need an ethernet cable running from your router to your Xbox since there's not wireless network card in the Xbox, you know that right?:p

When I had my Xbox I just connected it to the router using an ethernet cable and it worked...

The second negative is that the documentation is adequate, not great. I had one hurdle to overcome that took me quite a while to figure out. It turns out the device needs its own IP address. It can get that IP address from DHCP (Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol), from the WAP, or you have to set it up ahead of time. The way you accomplish this is first hook the bridge to your PC, use the included utility to talk to the bridge, and pre-assign it an IP. Then unhook the bridge (and hook yourself back onto your home network) and plug the bridge into your Xbox.

Here's the place I got stuck for a while: your Xbox and the bridge need two separate IPs. They are both nodes on the network. While it might have been obvious to some folks, nowhere did the docs say your devices had to have different IPs. Yes, now that I'm writing this, it seems somewhat clear, but it was definitely not when I was hooking it up.

I found this on another website this, this is the primary problem but am i suppose tio make up an i.p address.
