imagine my joy as i began to set up my wireless network. dreams of internet and file access anywhere in my house flashed across my mind as i set down to work.
now imagine how f*cked off i am, that 6 hours later the sodding thing still doesn't do what it's supposed to!
i'm trying to connect a laptop and a desktop so that they share one broadband connection and files with each other.
the internet sharing is ok, works fine. but the files are another story.
i'm using a linkysys WRT54G broadband router, and have my desktop wired into it along with my broadband modem. i set it up as the (very unhelpful!) manual said and was pleased to see that it all connected to the internet. same when i installed the pcmcia card on my laptop.
i set both computers up so that their network identification was on the same workgroup, and that's where the fun started! the first computer that connected to the network also connected to the workgroup, but would not connect to the other computer. i got a msg saying "Desktop is unavailable. You might not have permission to use this network resource. Contract the administrator of this server to find out if you have access permissions. This server address was not found on the workgroup", despite the fact there was an icon for the Desktop computer.
Desktop would not even connect to the workgroup, same msg as above but it said workgroup is unavaible and the list of servers for this work group is currently unavaible.
i'm guessing there's something i have to change in the router's security, but i can't for the life of me figure out wtf it is.
i'd try linksys's tech support.... only it's non existent.
