American Football sucks!!!!!!
Just a bunch of brainless apes trying to take down the opponent.
First of all I don't think they understand the meaning of the word "FOOTBALL"... It is supposed to be played with your "FOOT" not with your hands.
And why do they need all that protection... We don't see that in Rugby!
I once saw the Super Bowl and I fell asleep just after the "Stars and Stripes" were sung.

Yeah American "football" is the crappiest sport ever , its just a version of Rugby for wussies. Though Sycro Swimming is also pretty crappy , ice skatin , ballroom dancin , aussie rules and UFC also have their momnets.

Rugby Union and Ice Hockey.
Dunno why I hate Rugby Union, its maybe cos England are good at it.
Unlike US Football, Baseball, Cricket etc. Ice Hockey is supposed to be really fast and exciting but is just as boring as the other 3.
Oh and the reason Football is called Football in the States is because it is in theory a a sort of form of early football (soccer) just like Rugby is called Footy in some places.
Sorry if that last bit made no sense.

That would be because the actual name for Rugby is Rugby Football as it originated as a variation of the football rules at Rugby school. Sureley everyone knows that !!!

Why the americans called their crappy version of it Football too i have no idea, probrably just copying us in a vain attempt to make it sound half good!

Or maybe because American football is based on Rugby. The original version of American football was very similar to Rugby... actually more similar to Aussie rules football. The differances, though, were profound enough. Instead of a scrum, we had a scrimmage, in which the center kicked the ball back to the quarterback. Another variant was that any player on the possessing team could hold the ball carrier up so he couldn't be tackled. Eventually, this became the basis of the game. It degenerated into a pathetic mob throwing the poor quarterback up and down the field for three hours.... which resulted in numerous fatalities... the US government then called for major rules changes or the game would be banned.

New rules included the modern form of scrimmage, the forward pass, the four and out rule (you must gain ten yards on four plays or forfeit possession), and the eligable reciever rules. In '78, futher changes were made to open up the passing game by calling it Pass Interferance if a defender hit a reciever beyond 5 yards from the Line of Scrimmage. This is what created todays form of American football.

Anyone who's saying American football is "gay", please explain to me why you would run a one-one-thousand count screen to the "2" back in the "7"hole on 4th and long, if you are down by 14 with 1:30 to go.

Point being, if you don't understand the game, don't knock it. Football's appeal is that it is a tactical battle. It doesn't take the endurance of traditional football, or the ability to take punishment of Aussie football or Rugby, but it's a game of strategy. The game is infinately more complex than any other sport in the world, and mastery of it requires more than physical ability.

I think the world's crappiest sport is Basketball.

Now, I pretty much like all sports. Then again, I don't consider all competative events "sports". I don't consider sync. swimming a sport, nor do I consider figure skating a sport. They're both competative events, but not sports (IMHO).

I am not saying I don't like basketball, but in terms of entertainment value, I find that the sheer number of scores in the game cheapen the value of the point.

Now, in American football, 49-35 isn't THAT rare... but in reality, that could just as easily be considered 7-5... not a perticularly high score, rather common in baseball. Each touchdown is worth 7 points, so the actual number of points scored isn't as meaningful as the individual scores...

In basketball, a 130-120 score indicates about 125 individual scores... give or take considering 3 pointers and free throws... and thus, an individual score is practically meaningless in a given game, much less an entire season.

3 touchdowns, 3 goals (in hockey, soccer, whatever), or three runs is a heluva game... what's 6 points in basketball? The last guy on the bench.

By the way, my comments in regard to unfair judgement don't apply to those who have made valid arguments against football and those who don't like it despite understanding it.

Grassy56, fcc1876, and rumann are three examples of these types of "fair" attacks. Just saying it's gay is unfair... tell me why?

American sports tend to be slower... American football is a tactical game including lots of planning. It's actually just a few nations away from being an Olympic eligable sport, but it wont be on the basis that it's impossible to play a tournament in the time it takes to play the olympics... it takes about a week to prepare for a single football game... Very in depth game plans are made based on opponants tendancies in given situations. A given offensive play book has over 200 formations, with likely several hundred plays that can be run from each of those formations... and that's not including presnap motion. Their are hundreds of coverage schemes that quarterbacks have to be able to recognise in the time it takes him to drop back from center so that he can throw immediately off his fifth step, and blocking assignments constantly very depending on the position of the offensive players.

American football coaches are often compared to famous generals, and quite a few of them learned much of their philosophy from famous generals, because american football compares more closely to war than sports. The game of American football is truly won in the coaches box and on the practice field, not in the stadium.

This is a sweet thread/forum.... (my first visit).

First off, anyone who is saying hockey is the worst sport - we need to talk.

Secondly, curling :D is played all year round in Canada. It's a pretty sweet sport in my opinion.

American Football pisses me off just in the way it is so glorified by the US networks and fans and well like you said - too many war analogies and ... well i don't konw. I just dislike how all the players are so cocky after any play no matter how good it was.

About american sports being generally slower... I'd have to agree/disagree.
- Baseball is terrible to watch and very slow.
- So is American football
Football easier to watch for an entire game.

But Americans want all their sports to be super high paced and action packed. Baseball is more a social/hot dog eating event for the fans. Football is similar and the whole war analogies get everyone into it that much more.

But nascar is the biggest sport in the us, and it's one of my least favourite simply because it's a circular track and basically the same everytime. Rally racing is 10000 times better.

I disagree with basketball being pointless because of hte amount of scoring. It's all relative. Every hoop is as important as the last and the next. On every possession of the ball you can look at it as a success of failure. You can't score once and then change your strategy and hold of the opponent for a 2-0 win... Strategies are different as they are in every sport.

I don't like basketball as much as soccer and hockey but it's up there.
