It's a well known fact that Japan owned the inexperienced troops of the US in Battlefield. This cowardly terroristic attack was the US's last hope of ending the war. And it's another well known fact that the 2nd bomb was to be thrown regardless of Japan's surrender. Of course I will defend the bombings of Nagasaki and Hiroshima. Would it have been better if Japan wouldn't have tried to conquer half the known world? Yes. Would it have been better if Japan didn't attack the United States? Yes. There are many things that would have been better if they didn't happen, but the bombings of both of those cities saved more people than it killed. In war, and especially back in the 1940's, I think people understood that was a good thing. By your logic, we should have invaded mainland Japan and killed more people... I don't understand your logic, so maybe you can explain it to me.

As far as Japan "owning" the US in that war... during the first part it was a bit rough, but the US completely cleaned the clock of Japan. It wasn't US troops doing suicide runs at the Japanese as a last ditch attempt to survive...

Now, about prisoners of war. I am telling you that Japan is responsible for some of the most brutal treatment of people and POW's in modern history. And then you bring up one incident in Iraq, and Guantanamo... I don't know who this Iraqi woman who was raped is. But all I have to do to coutner your arguemtns about how prisoners are treated according to your Islamic brothers, is post the links of beheadings of innocent contractors and the like. About that 'what could've happened if not' philosophy.. this has always succeeded in defending the most horrifying actions. It is by far the worst excuse ever. It grants legitimacy to most terroristic actions this planet has witnessed against thousands of peaceful citizens in their homes. Japan -doing wrong- started the battles with a highly efficient attack on a pure military target, whereas the US ended it with a highly cowardly performed terroristic attack on 2 highly populated pure civilian targets. The difference is huge, and clearly seen to anyone with common sense. And as for the POW treating... I would like to discuss how Saddam's 'savage' army treated the American POWs... 3 chicken meals a day... surgeries peformed when needed. Special treatment to women POWs, seperated from men. No physical abuse whatsoever. In other words: THE COMPLETE OPPOSITE of the American troops treatement. You really want to bring THAT up again?

Hahaha, did I really write all that mean stuff? It was probably directed mostly at Virgo, and he fell for the same tactics. It's the same tactic used in Football games... get the person mentally distracted with a cheap foul or say something about their mother and that's when they begin to lose the game. I have to say the only people I can think of who didn't fall for this tactic were Rhizome, Brondby and Vagegast.

I do have to admit you just nailed me on the apple comment... I've got to give you thumbs up on that one. OUCH!

Anyway. The "what could have happened" philosophy has been used to justify many things. Especially in the case of "what if we stopped Hitler from invading Poland and annexing the Sudentenland?" Those are HUGE "what ifs" that would have possibly saved millions upon millions of lives. And that is where the use of "peaceful" means to placate a madman just doesn't work. And I think the same can be said of Saddam. "What if" we left him in power and withdrew sanctions? Who knows, but what ifs are easy to decide later in life. The bombing of those two cities was something that might not have needed to be done, but at the time it was decided to do so. After the destruction you will have noticed that such a thing has never happened again. It's hard to debate this subject from 70 years in the future... war is hell, and we could have just continued to firebomb cities as well. Either way, history will judge it as a bad thing.

As for Iraq treatment of prisoners. I did hear that some were treated nicely, but we have moved on to a different question in regards to prisoners with the terrorists in Iraq. You posted some things about how "Islam" should treat POW's. I can say that isn't how they are being treated. I just wonder how the main group of Iraqi POW's are treated, and not just the bad instances that you have heard about on the news. And I hope you do know that those responsible at Abu Graib are going to jail.
