Big breakdown of Bayern this season, what I think they'll do and where we could still improve:
GK: Neuer
Defense is pretty straight forward with a settled back four that should be really dynamite: Hummels and Boateng in the middle, Lahm and Alaba at fullback. Backing up the fullbacks are Rafinha and Bernat, plus there's of course Kimmich who was apparently the best RB at Euro 2016. Backing up the CBs is not as easy, but there are still several options. Javi Martinez, Holger Badstuber should be healthy again, Kimmich, and of course we could always play Alaba or Xabi Alonso back there. Benatia was shipped to Juventus, so it's very unlikely we'll buy another CB in the summer even though we could probably use an older veteran. I personally don't like Martinez in the backline and Badstuber is the biggest injury risk in football.
Central Midfield has a lot of options, but in my opinion it is far from settled. If I had to guess the two players to start matchday 1 in the Bundesliga I would pick Arturo Vidal and Xabi Alonso, and that's a pretty good pairing for Ancelotti's system. Vidal is a 100% starter, but Alonso is probably in his last year at Bayern and really getting up there in age. His age shows in the very highest quality matches and ideally you want to find the permanent replacement this season. The options are numerous. First, there is Thiago who is an awesome creative player and was raised to play more defensively at Barcelona, so in a perfect world he would already have made the spot his own, but unfortunately this hasn't happened. Thiago lacks positional discipline and I fear this will be very very bad in Ancelotti's eyes. Vidal creates chaos on the pitch, but you can only have 1 midfielder doing that in a game. A disciplined Thiago starts every match next to Vidal, but will Ancelotti have an impact on his positional game? The other options are even more interesting. I already touched on Kimmich, who is going to be a wonderful player, but like Alaba he might just be better suited as a fullback in his career. It could be the difference between being a good player in any number of positions (CM, CB ), or a great player at fullback. Javi Martinez could go back to his natural position at CM and would make one hell of a physical midfield pairing with Vidal, but it's hard to see at Bayern where we require creativity from the base of midfield for reasons I'll explain later. Javi is probably just fucked for his career. The one season he played in midfield we were champions of Europe. Finally there's the wildcard of Renato Sanches, but I see him spelling Vidal for this first season until he gets the one-touch technique and positional discipline/awareness that it will take to play for a club like Bayern. This isn't Benfica, and for an 18 year old to step in and play for 2016 Bayern in most matches is nearly impossible. He'll get games, but probably not start a ton. Great player to have to rest Vidal, though.
The wings are elite and straight forward: Robben, Costa, Coman, Ribery in that order for me. No explanations necessary.
Striker is just as straight forward with Robert Lewandowski leading the line and Muller deputizing in case of injury.
The problem spot for Bayern is the #10 role, and I hate to say that because currently it is Thomas Muller's spot. I love Muller, and he is vital for the team, but for FC Bayern to likely play a 4-2-3-1 and have literally no one in the squad who can offer some creativity in the hole behind the striker... that's pretty tough, and I think we need to buy a player that can offer the kind of thing that Muller can't. This wouldn't be for every game, but several situations will require a player like this and you can always push Muller to the wing. I'm saying all this because Mario Gotze is a terrible player and is being pushed out the door faster than you'd open the window if a friend farted in the car. Guys Bayern could get if they paid: James, Oscar, Isco, Bernardo Silva, Mata, Draxler, probably Coutinho and Eriksen. I like the idea of the first 4, probably in that order although Silva and Sanches would be pretty cool to have together. Who knows.
Out the door are Rode, Hojbjerg, Benatia, and Gotze. I think Hojbjerg will be awesome in England if he's given a chance; the kid just hasn't got a real opportunity in his career and he's so talented and also pretty big and physical. The rest are meh, for the most part IMO. Didn't fit or in Rode's case just wasn't the right quality for this super team that's being built.
Prediction: Treble, of course.
